Burning Incense Releases Cancer-Causing Chemicals

News articles on newscientist.com and mercola.com indicate that burning incense can expose people to dangerous levels of cancer-causing chemicals.

Researchers collected air samples from inside and outside of a temple in Taiwan, and found that the air inside the temple was highly concentrated with a group of cancer-causing chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Although the concentration of PAHs found in the temple in this study is almost certainly higher than it would be in a typical residence, this study serves as a good reminder about the potential dangers of burning incense and other scented products like candles in areas that are not well ventilated.

This study also serves as a good reminder to allow fresh air to circulate throughout one's living space. In the summer, windows should be kept open whenever possible. In the winter, if various factors make it difficult to keep one's windows open just a crack, it can be beneficial to one's health to simply open a few windows for a minute or two each day to allow some fresh air to enter the residence. All of this assumes that one's neighborhood is relatively pollution-free; if the residence in question is in a heavily polluted area, it may be best to look at investing in a high quality indoor air purifier.

When using cleaning products, avoid the use of indoor air cleaning devices such as electrostatic precipitators and ionizers that can emit ozone.

Remove bad odors instead of masking them
Open windows.

Clean the source of the odor with nontoxic products.

Empty the garbage frequently.

Burn 100 percent pure beeswax candles with 100 percent cotton wicks - they purify and clean the air.

Use an open box of baking soda for smelly rooms.

Use indoor plants to clear carbon dioxide and other toxins.

Use green tea to refresh your home.

Perfume the air with natural scents

Here’s an affordable air freshener we use in our very own bathroom. We’ve taken a small bowl from Target and filled it with scented bath salts from Kmart. We also added some vintage Avon fudgcicle-shaped hair combs that compliment our sweets-centric bathroom motif, but one could replace these with long candles, decorative branches, artificial flowers, or numerous other decorative items.

The initial strong scent of the salts dissipates quickly into a mild, but pleasant bouquet, and lasts for about a month. As the scent diminishes, simply shake salts to refresh, or simply pour them into your next bath!

anyway, thanks i'll probably do this. :) maybe i'll use chopsticks or bamboo or something.

if you put your favorite essential oil in baking powder, the scent remains strong and lasts for several weeks.

SAN FRANCISCO - When Ann Dey's dog had a stroke in July, one side of his face became paralyzed so severely he couldn't blink. She knew she needed to do something before the 13-year-old pug, Jimmy, lost his eye to infection.

As alternative approaches like acupuncture and herbal remedies have moved further into the mainstream for humans, veterinarians have made those same techniques increasingly available for pets.

Animal care officials say pet owners have been convinced by their own positive experiences that their pets should also enjoy the benefits of alternative techniques.

"Seeing is believing," said Sally Wortman, Pets Unlimited's hospital administrator, standing near a row of scented candles on the new clinic's reception desk.

A Japanese fountain, soft lights and walls painted in soothing tones of sage, ochre and salmon augment the calming atmosphere of the clinic, which is one floor down from the city's only 24-hour-a-day emergency room for pets.

Beth Schneider, an animal acupuncturist for Pets Unlimited, said one positive experience with alternative techniques can be enough to convince doubters.

"They see how beneficial it is to the animal," she said. "And they want to start going to acupuncturists themselves."

The Maryland-based American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association claims more than 800 members from Florida to Alaska. Chartrand learned about an alternative treatment called therapeutic touch from her sister, a veterinarian who uses the technique on horses in Kansas.

Still, despite broadening acceptance, alternative medicine for animals faces continued skepticism. The American Veterinary Medical Association said in recent guidelines on alternative medical techniques for animals that the organization is "open to their consideration."

But it stressed that the quality of research into different methods varies, saying some practices "may differ from current scientific knowledge."

Products for making indoor air smell fresh or laundry smell clean may include volatile chemical compounds technically considered to be pollutants. Adam Hinterthuer reports

Laundry detergents and air fresheners have long promised to keep your house and clothes smelling sunshine fresh and rain shower clean. But what they haven't said is what exactly you're sniffing when you snuggle up in your just-washed sheets. After hearing from people who said strong scents made them sick, University of Washington researcher Anne Steinemann scratched the surface and found almost a hundred chemicals that weren't listed on the labels. According to her report in the journal Environmental Impact Assessment Review, plug-in air fresheners, scented sprays, dryer sheets and detergents all contained a mixture of volatile organic compounds.

But five out of the six products Steinemann tested emitted one or more so-called hazardous air pollutants, which are carcinogens

Although for the sake of my own amusement let's just go ahead and assume they're doing it.
