No Justice for Russian Journalists

It was a quintessentially cold night in Moscow when Anna Politkovskaya arrived back at her flat with her shopping on October 7, 2006. As she took the elevator down for the last bag of groceries, she was confronted by a gunman who shot her twice in the chest and once in the head. She died instantly.

It is estimated that over 300 journalists have died or disappeared in Russia since 1993 as a result of their work.

US army bases will appear on the Black Sea Coast – in Bulgaria and Romania.

The authorities of the two nations expect that the US military men will settle there for a long time.

It is not ruled out that elements of the US missile defense system may eventually appear in Eastern Europe. US officials say that the appearance of army bases in Bulgaria and Romania strictly corresponds to the plans of the US administration to relocate troops in foreign countries (George W. Bush announced the plans in 2004).

Konstantin Sivkov, told Pravda.Ru that the appearance of new army bases in Bulgaria and Romania would pose a threat to Russian interests.

As a result, Russia will find itself trapped.

U.N. on Israeli War Crimes

clipper's remarks: The Goldstone Report now has been approved overwhelmingly by the UN General Assembly.

The report calls for Israel to investigate it's war crime accusations...and for the Palestinians to investiage theirs -- and says the slow starvation of over a million and half people in the Gaza Strip should stop.

Now, it seems it goes to the Security Council.

Which means, if things go as usual, the USA will veto it and it will end there.

The USA has does similar actions at the UN for decades, protecting Israel, no matter what.

The USA House of Congress has even gone on record, this week, opposing this war crimes report.

Israel yesterday seized a ship with weapons and said they come from Iran and this was a war crime...also pointing out that Russia, the USA, China, etc. are all guility of war crimes.

The conclusion appears to be that war is a war crime. Everybody's guilty. And let's just forget it.

...um, except when talking about the Nazi's of WWII or the Bosnian Serbs curre

UN General Assembly endorses Goldstone Report

The UN General Assembly approved on Thursday an Arab-backed resolution endorsing the Goldstone Report, paving the way for the matter to be sent to the Security Council.

A total of 114 nations voted in favor of the resolution and 18 voted against it, with 44 members abstaining.

In the vast majority of these categories, the U.S., despite economic turmoil, remains a comparative "powerhouse" to Russia. But, take note of a couple of areas in which the U.S. is weakest - oil and natural gas reserves.

The "powers that be" know we are weak in these categories vis-a-vis Russia. Ironically, it is often those same "powers that be" that so fervently resist U.S. energy independence.

The armed forces are said to have carried out "war games" in which nuclear missiles were fired and troops practised an amphibious landing on the country's coast.

Documents obtained by Wprost, one of Poland's leading news magazines, said the exercise was carried out in conjunction with soldiers from Belarus.

The manoeuvres are thought to have been held in September and involved about 13,000 Russian and Belarusian troops.

Poland, which has strained relations with both countries, was cast as the "potential aggressor".

Marek Opiola MP, said: "It's an attempt to put us in our place. Don't forget all this happened on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland."

The Russian troop exercises will come as an unwelcome sight to the states nestling on Russia’s western border who have deep-rooted anxieties over any Russian show of strength.

Moscow and Minsk have insisted that Operation West was to help "ensure the strategic stability in the East European region".

Israel is dealing with a unique problem - what to do with a surplus of hippos.

Israel's zoo has had a baby boom in the hippo department.

A high birthrate has boosted the hippo population to 40 - far more than the average zoo could handle.

Zookeepers say they reached a point where they could find nothing to do with so many of them.

So in recent months, 14 hippos have been shipped by air or sea to zoos in Russia, Turkey, Vietnam, even Kazakhstan.

They say Israel is suddenly the world's top exporter of hippopotamuses. Many more zoos have placed orders.

In Ukraine there has been at least 70 confirmed deaths of respiratory diseases this autumn alone. In total about 200.000 have been reported to be infected. The country's health ministry says the swine fly count now stands at 22 people so far. Ukraine's President has appealed to Europe, Russia and the U.S. for medical help, calling the illness a threat to national security. A mission from the World Health Organisation is set to arrive in Ukraine to assess the situation. But it seems that some people are taking advantage of an increasingly desperate population...
