Egypt (AINA) -- On October 24, 2009 Egyptian State Security arrested a Christian Copt in the village of Deir Samalout, Samalout, Minia province, for praying "without a license." He was held in prison for two days before being released on "compassionate grounds." Maurice Salama Sharkawy, 37 years old, had invited Pastor Elia Shafik, to conduct the sacrament of the 'Anointing of the Sick' for his sick father, who had suffered a stroke. State Security broke into his house while the prayers were ongoing, handcuffed Maurice, put him into a police car and took him to a police station for interrogation.

Authorities accused him of carrying out "religious rites without a license" and "causing sectarian sedation" by calling a priest into the village. A number of his cousins living in the same family house and who attended the prayers were also detained with him.

State Security has placed Maurice under observation by three policemen.

Three journalists, one of them foreign, were arrested at Wednesday’s mass demonstrations in Tehran by a regime determined to suppress all independent sources of information.

Farhad Poulaid, an Iranian working for the French wire service AFP, was detained as he rode through central Tehran on a motorbike and nothing has been heard from him since. Nafiseh Zareh Kohan, an Iranian who writes for reformist publications, and Niels Krosgaard, 31, a Danish journalism student, were also held, the International Federation of Journalists said yesterday.

The arrests are part of a sustained crackdown on all independent media, foreign and domestic, in the five months since President Ahmadinejad’s hotly disputed re-election triggered the most serious unrest in the Islamic Republic’s 30-year history.

The international press freedom organisation Reporters Without Borders said: “At least a hundred journalists and cyberdissidents have been arrested since the election and 23 of them are still being held.”

Mahmoud Vahidnia, Student, Stuns Iran By Criticizing Supreme Leader

BEIRUT — An unassuming college math student has become an unlikely hero to many in Iran for daring to criticize the country's most powerful man to his face.

Mahmoud Vahidnia has received an outpouring of support from government opponents for the challenge – unprecedented in a country where insulting supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is a crime punishable by prison.

Perhaps most surprising, the young math whiz has so far suffered no repercussions from the confrontation at a question-and-answer session between Khamenei and students at Tehran's Sharif Technical University.

After the speech, Vahidnia raised his hand, then for 20 minutes he criticized the Iranian leader over the fierce crackdown on postelection protests, in which the opposition says 69 people were killed and thousands were arrested.

"Never before has anyone had the courage to do such a thing."

Lithuanian President Announces Investigation into CIA Secret Prison

The president of Lithuania called for an official investigation Tuesday into an ABC News.com exclusive report in August that the CIA housed a secret prison for al Qaeda suspects in Lithuania for more than a year beginning in 2004.

"If this is true," President Dalia Grybauskaite said, "Lithuania has to clean up, accept responsibility, apologize, and promise that it will never happen again."

At a press conference with the Council of Europe Human Rights Commission, Grybauskaite announced the investigation after it was clear a previous attempt by the Lithuanian Parliament was insufficient, according to a Council of Europe official.

ABC News reported that the CIA built a secret prison in a residential section of Vilnius from September 2004 through November 2005

to detain and interrogate top level al Qaeda prisoners captured around the world after 9/11.

The law loves American Christianity

At first glance, I thought this story was good news: Oklahoma is going to build a Christian prison! About time, I thought, I can think of a few Christians who deserve a few years for faith-abuse. But no…it's a prison to be administered by Christians to give Christian criminals special privileges. Not quite as appropriate, but more in line with what we've gotten used to from our dominant faith tradition.

We're getting more of the same from Congress, too. Religion is being given permission to intrude on science once again, with the sanctimonious Orrin Hatch (abetted by a pair of Democrats, Kerry and Kennedy) sponsoring a provision in the mangled health care football to allow prayer to count as medicine.

I may just have to convert to Catholicism under this bill so I can charge the US and my insurance provider to cover my near-sightedness treatments at Lourdes. And the French Riviera.

One is Waco at an Institute called the Life Management Institue (LMI). LMI is used to teach CIA and other government operatives to use a super form of NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming. The people who attend LMI are usually field operatives who use their skill to rapidly convince people to do what they want them to do.

Italian Court Delivers Damning Verdict on CIA Renditions

A court in Milan has delivered its verdict in the spectacular trial of several CIA agents involved in the 2003 kidnapping of the Islamist Abu Omar. Some 23 American agents received prison terms after being found guilty in absentia. The court's decision is a condemnation of the anti-terror policies of George W. Bush.

In the world's first trial involving the CIA's "extraordinary renditions" program since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, a court in the Italian city of Milan delivered a clear verdict. A total of 23 US agents were convicted in abstentia and sentenced to prison terms over their role in the 2003 kidnapping of the Islamist Abu Omar.

Twenty-two of the Americans were given five year terms while the former Milan CIA station chief Robert Lady was sentenced to eight years in prison. Three US citizens were acquitted, with reference to their diplomatic immunity.

Second time 50-year-old caught having sex with the same animal

CONWAY, S.C. - A man caught having sex with a horse in a South Carolina stable has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Multiple media outlets report that Rodell Vereen was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to buggery. A judge also ordered Vereen to get counseling and stay away from the Lazy B stables when he's released.

Authorities charged Vereen, 50, after a woman set up a surveillance camera and caught him on tape having sex with her horse in July. Horse owner Barbara Kenley said she had noticed her 21-year-old horse Sugar was acting strangely. She also noticed things had been moved around near the horse's stall at her stables in Longs, about 20 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach.

She said she staked out the stable and caught Vereen sneaking into the barn days later, holding him at shotgun point until police arrived.

The trial is the first by any government over the CIA's extraordinary rendition program, which transferred suspects overseas for interrogation. Human rights advocates charge that renditions were the CIA's way to outsource the torture of prisoners to countries where it is permitted.

Italy's government has denied involvement.

Among the Americans acquitted was Jeffrey Castelli, a former Rome CIA station chief, who prosecutors had alleged coordinated the abduction. The two other acquitted Americans were also assigned to the U.S. Embassy in the Italian capital and thus were covered by broad diplomatic immunity.

Former Milan CIA station chief, Robert Seldon Lady, received the stiffest sentence, eight years in prison. The other 22 convicted American defendants each received a five-year sentence.

The Americans, all but one identified by prosecutors as CIA agents, were tried in absentia. Their lawyers entered innocent pleas on their client's behalf. They are considered fugitives from Italian justice.

In Washington, CIA spokesman George Little declined to comment on the convictions. He said, “The CIA has not commented on any of the allegations surrounding Abu Omar,” the kidnapped man.

Can Prosecutors Be Sued By People They Framed?

Do prosecutors have total immunity from lawsuits for anything they do, including framing someone for murder? That is the question the justices of the Supreme Court face Wednesday.

On one side of the case being argued are Iowa prosecutors who contend "there is no freestanding right not to be framed." They are backed by the Obama administration, 28 states and every major prosecutors organization in the country.

On the other side are two black men — Terry Harrington and Curtis McGhee — men who served 25 years in prison before evidence long hidden in police files resulted in them being freed.
