The technology is used to determine the geologic makeup of the seabed.

"The bottom line is that air-gun noise from seismic surveys that are thousands of yards distant does not drive away sperm whales living in the Gulf," said Doug Biggs, a professor of oceanography at Texas A&M University and a study participant.

However, Biggs said some whales, when diving deep into the Gulf to eat, reduced the rate at which they searched for prey when scientists carried out controlled seismic experiments. Biggs and others acknowledged the whales have been exposed to such noise for several decades, so it's impossible to say how they behaved before the oil companies arrived.

HOUSTON - Powerful acoustic devices used by oil companies searching for new sources of hydrocarbons in the Gulf of Mexico have had no discernible effect on endangered sperm whales living in those waters, according to a federally funded study released Thursday.

The six-year, $9.3 million study examined the impact of offshore seismic activity, which involves firing air guns into the water, on the Gulf's sperm whale population, estimated to be around 1,600.

Most of the whales live in the northern Gulf, often in areas heavy with exploration and production operations.

"The two are not mutually exclusive," said Randall Luthi, director of the U.S. Minerals Management Service, which oversees E&P activities in federal waters and which funded the study. "That's the kind of knowledge we need to have."

Fifteen federal and state agencies, universities and other organizations collaborated on the study which sought to establish baseline information about the whales' biology and behavior.

The person who contacts you claims to need help in transferring the cash to another country. A proportion of the money is offered for help in arranging the transfer.

When it comes to fashion millions of women would prefer to splash out on the the latest pair of shoes or must-have dress than spend their hard earned cash on food, according to a new report.

For almost a third - 32 per cent - of UK females would starve for their fashion, and half of the female population are spending more on clothes and accessories each month than they are on food - prompting the new diet phrase 'fashiorexia'.

So far this summer women in Britain have been gorging themselves on fashion, not food, with nearly half admitting to spending more on looking good than eating, and 18 per cent spending more than half their wages each month on clothes and accessories.

A huge 32 per cent of the women polled said that they would prefer to go without food if it meant making a fashion purchase, confessing to belonging to the term 'fashiorexic'.

DARA TORRES, the 41-year-old Olympic swimmer with the impossibly chiseled abs who collected three silver medals in Beijing, has proved at the elite level that getting older doesn’t mean getting slower in the water. But put her aside for now.

Even outside the elite ranks, the 40-something (and older) swimmer of today is faster than the 40-something of yesteryear.

Researchers at the Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming at Indiana University found that the population of Masters swimmers (made up of 42,500 members ages 18 to 100-plus) has gotten faster over the last 20 years in age groups from 25 to 55, said Joel Stager, the center’s director.

Why is that? They are applying better skills.

“Technique trumps training

“Water is the great equalizer.”

As they age, people lose muscle mass and cardiovascular capacity, which declines by 1 to 1.5 percent annually. But for regular exercisers, the rate of decline is slower,
