Having embarked upon the laborious task of portrayal, we will do our best to make it a labor of love if not necessarily devotion — and to cut out the turgid and boring bits beloved by theologians.

India gets its first woman saint

A Catholic nun, Sister Alphonsa, has been made India's first female saint, at an event presided over by Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican.

The canonisation was greeted with delight by Christians in the southern Indian state of Kerala, where Sister Alphonsa lived until her death in 1946.

It is being described as a boost to the spirits of India's Christians.

According to a Vatican biography, when she was only 13 she deliberately thrust her foot into a pile of burning embers.

Her aim was to make herself less attractive, and therefore less likely to be forced into marriage.

Sister Alphonsa endured successive bouts of illness and died in her mid-30s.

In the Vatican's view, Jesus led her to perfection through a life of suffering.

Vatican City, Oct 3, 2008 / 05:20 pm (CNA).- Marking the 40th anniversary of “Humane Vitae,” Pope Benedict XVI has sent a message to the president of the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family, in which he praises the Church’s teaching on contraception as the only way to understand the truth about human sexuality.

That important document, writes Pope Benedict, "deals with one of the essential aspects of the vocation of marriage, and of the specific path to sanctity deriving therefrom. In fact, the married couple, having received the gift of love, are called in their turn to give themselves to one another unreservedly."

Noting that the “possibility of procreating a new human life is inherent to the complete giving of the spouses," Pope Benedict explains that contraception seeks to “deny the intimate truth of married love."

Vatican officials seldom single out political leaders who differ with the Church on issues like abortion rights or embryonic stem cell research. But now that the Vatican’s highest court is led by an American, the former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke, we can expect things to get more explicit in Vatican City — at least when when it comes to U.S. politics.

the U.S. Democratic Party risked “transforming itself definitively into a party of death for its decisions on bioethical issues.” He then attacked two of the party’s most high profile Catholics — vice presidential candidate Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — for misrepresenting Church teaching on abortion.

He said Biden and Pelosi, “while presenting themselves as good Catholics, have presented Church doctrine on abortion in a false and tendentious way.”

Pope Benedict has been encouraging Catholic bishops to speak out more openly on public policy issues to make the Church’s voice heard.

Anyone not familiar with this particular web site will not be surprised that they have concerns about Ifill. The clip mentions that WND is a "right-leaning" Web site. That's like calling the Pope slightly religious. Admittedly, my only exposure to this site has been through articles by DeSousa (far right religious nut), I'd take anything they wrote with a pound of salt.

Moderator’s Planned Book Becomes a Topic of Debate

In mid-August, shortly after the Commission on Presidential Debates named Gwen Ifill of PBS as a moderator of the coming vice-presidential event, she wrote an essay in Time magazine that identified her as the author of a coming book, “The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama.”

A couple of weeks later, an article in The Washington Post about her moderating duties described the book as focusing on “the Democratic nominee and such up-and-coming black politicians as Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Newark Mayor Cory Booker.”

But on the eve of the debate, Ms. Ifill and her book became the fresh object of outrage on conservative talk radio, blogs and cable news after a right-leaning Web site, WND.com, posted an article late Tuesday with the headline, “VP debate moderator Ifill releasing pro-Obama book.”

I believe the reason our Govt. hates him and Chavez is because they can't control neither both are self sustaining with oil reserves. And he's smarter than bush to boot!

And if things keep going the way they are he's right! The greed of a few has bought us to our knees. I can't believe that Obama had to bring up the idea that the American tax payer should reap a portion of any gains from the near trillion lend.. Shouldn't that have been in the proposal from the start -- which tells me they just want to save themselves so they can start all over again!!

That would only cause another refugee crisis if not countless deaths as we are seeing in Iraq. One cannot speak of love and totally demonize a nation of people. The reason his extremist point of view is accepted instead of opposed though is because he keeps pointing out injustices in order to justify his extremism. If we were to solve the Israeli-Palestinian issue and others once and for all, extremists like him would not have as much support. People of all sides who want peace need to unite and push for social justice so injustice does not breed extremists.

A popular Italian actress has avoided a possible five-year jail term over some off-color comments she made about Pope Benedict XVI.

An Italian prosecutor had vowed to take comedian Sabina Guzzanti to court on charges of religious slander.

At a July demonstration in Rome organized against the government of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Guzzanti said, "Within 20 years the Pope will be where he ought to be -- in hell, tormented by great big poofter devils, and very active ones, not passive ones."

Rome prosecutor Giovanni Ferrara initially threatened to prosecute the actress for offending the honor of the sacred and inviolable person of the pope.

Under Italian law, courts can sentence people to up to five years in prison for "offending the honor" of the Pope.

PARIS - Pope Benedict XVI's first visit to France is providing President Nicolas Sarkozy another opportunity to fulfill a campaign promise – to rock the boat.

Unlike any French president in decades, Mr. Sarkozy sees a more open role for religion in French society. And he seized upon the conservative German pope's four-day trip to directly challenge French secularism, one of the most prized traditions of La République and a strict legal and cultural sanction against bringing matters of church and faith into the public realm.

Secularism, or laïcité, is central to the modern French identity. It's a result of hundreds of years of efforts to remove the influence of the Roman Catholic church from French institutions and reduce its moral authority. French media don't discuss religion. At offices or work, most French believers don't tell colleagues they are going to mass or church. It is seen as a private matter.

THE Catholic Church is raising holy hell over a new book that encourages couples to sneak into church confessional booths and have sex.

In "101 Places To Have Sex Before You Die," out in November, authors Marsha Normandy and Joseph St. James write: "The only sex the Church doesn't frown upon is the married, heterosexual and birth control-free kind, so the odds are the pope is pretty displeased with you already.

"Instead of carrying all that mortal sin around with you for weeks at a time until you can make it to confession, why not combine both with a quick and tidy 2-for-1 session?

"It'd be pretty hard for both of you (it doesn't count if your partner is the priest) to sneak into the booth during Mass, so avoid Sundays, as well as big holidays such as Christmas Eve and Easter, when the pews are likely to be filled."

The book adds that drawbacks include: "splinters, ex-communication, Peeping (Father) Tom."

Women need secularism

These proverbs from Slovakia show the other side of "family values". This is the name of a whole system of control which can prevent a woman from leaving an abusive marriage and further cement her in place by burdening her with unplanned children. The control imposed by the Vatican disproportionately affects women. That's because the hierarchy of obedience which goes from the pope to the parish priest doesn't stop there: it continues on, from the head of the household down to his wife.

Women must be kept at home and bearing children for the Church. Ordaining them as priests would give them dangerous authority. On 29 May 2008 the Vatican issued a decree "Regarding the crime of attempting sacred ordination of a woman". This is such a grave offence that it incurs automatic excommunication, on a par with heresy, schism, and laying violent hands on the Pope.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican has warned journalists who will travel with Pope Benedict to Lourdes next month not to put the revered water from the shrine in their hand luggage on the papal plane or it may be confiscated.

The pope will travel Sept 12-15 to Paris and the site in southern France where the Madonna is said to have appeared to a peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous, 150 years ago.

The millions of pilgrims who visit the shrine each year drink from its fonts, many believing its water to be potentially miraculous and healing. Most take bottles of it away with them.

Corsi, you may recall, was the coauthor of "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry," the campaign diatribe that slimed the decorated Vietnam War veteran and then-Democratic presidential candidate's war record.

Corsi is frank about his motives for writing "The Obama Nation." As he told the New York Times this week: "The goal is to defeat Obama. I don't want Obama to be in office."

That's clear enough from the text. You can pretty well sum the whole thing up this way: The Democratic candidate is a deceitful jihadist drug addict who, if elected, plans to impose a black supremacist, socialist regime.

What's far more interesting is how somebody like Corsi suddenly becomes a player in a presidential campaign.

If the music you seem to hear playing in the background sounds familiar, it's because ... yes, you've crossed over into the Twilight Zone.
