Burmese Blogger Sentenced to 20 Years For Reporting on Protests

There are almost 69 cyber-dissidents in jail worldwide, yet Burma's Nay Phone Latt has become the first blogger to receive such a lengthy prison term. His crime? To have informed the outside world about the military junta's brutal crackdown during pro-democracy protests in September 2007.

Nay Phone Latt is the pen name of Nay Myo Kyaw, 28, the owner of two Rangoon Internet cafés. Latt also kept a blog describing the hardships of daily life in Rangoon and the obstacles faced by young Burmese people in criticizing the government since the September 2007 protests.

Nay Phone Latt's mother, who was not allowed to attend the trial inside the prison, said: "I was expecting him to get 10 to 12 years in prison at the most. I never imagined he would get this much. The authorities have been excessively cruel with him." According to Reporters Without Borders and the Burma Media Association, the blogger's lawyer himself was jailed for criticizing the special court's procedures.

Grouping Information So It’s More Easily Understood

Think about the amount of information you have to process each day. You read reports and meeting notes, you discuss problems, you hold team briefings, and you chat by the water cooler. Some of the information you receive is easy to understand and retain; some of it is not. The difference is often in how the information is presented.

Evidence that chunking works is all around us:

Phone numbers and credit card numbers are typically chunked. Both types of number are usually chunked in groups of three or four numbers.

When you encounter a phone number (or other familiar grouping) that is chunked differently than the way you are used to, it can be much harder to remember it.

Rather than memorizing the letters O - T - M - E - E - R, converting them to the word “REMOTE” makes the task much easier

Woman testifies about cell phone in throat

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Prosecutors say a man shoved a cell phone down his girlfriend's throat because he was angry and jealous. But defense attorneys insisted as a trial got underway that the woman swallowed the phone intentionally to keep the defendant from seeing whom she had been calling.
Marlon Brando Gill, 24, is charged with first-degree assault in the December incident involving 25-year-old Melinda Abell. Abell has given inconsistent accounts of what happened before she was taken to a hospital, where an emergency room doctor removed the phone.
She testified Tuesday on the first day of Gill's trial that she couldn't remember how the phone got in her throat, saying she had too much to drink that night.

She said in court that she could not recall writing a statement to police after the incident, in which she said: "I think he thought I'd been talking to other guys. ... He took my phone to see who I had been calling."

clipper's remarks: I love the idea that the government has to "recover some of this money". The idea that all money belongs to the government and they might give some away but will take it all back is at the heart of our problems with big government.

My money, that I worked for and sweated for and already have half taken away in taxes of one sort or another - that is my money not the governments. And any suggestion that I am keeping too much of my work efforts is not only obscene, but disingenuous.

Add it up - what do you pay every year in social security taxes and medicare taxes and federal income taxes and state income taxes and local income taxes and state sales taxes and county sales taxes and local sales taxes and property taxes and to get a license plate for your car and the taxes on any property you sell and the taxes on your phone line and the taxes on your cell phone and the taxes on your water bill and taxes on your electricity bill and your garbage bill and ....

Suddenly, with Barack Obama pitching almost a trillion dollars in new spending, leading Democrats see nothing wrong with deficit spending. Why? Because the rich will pay for it, silly! Barney Frank explains that spending tons of money we don’t have now will be no problem, because he knows where to get it:

I think at this point, there needs to be an immediate increase in spending, and I think this is a time when deficit fear has to take a second, uh, a second seat. I do think this is the time for a very important kind of dose of [unintelligible]. Yes, I think later on, there should be tax increases. Speaking personally, I think there are a lot of rich people out there who we can tax at a point down the road to recover some of this money.

Frank himself kept telling us from 2001 to this year that Fannie and Freddie were solvent and that there wouldn’t be a collapse — and so we didn’t need to toughen oversight over their business practices.

Governor Sarah Palin reportedly spoke with the victim by phone.

Meanwhile, late this afternooon, the Obama-Biden campaign released a statement, saying: "This is a horrendous act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."

According to police, the 20-year-old woman said she was robbed at an ATM at the corner of Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street in the Bloomfield area around 9pm Wednesday after leaving a Republican phone bank.

The woman told police that the suspect, described only as a dark-skinned African-American man about 6'4", stole $60 from her and became enraged after seeing a bumper sticker supporting Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain on her car.

The woman said the suspect punched and kicked her before knocking her the ground.

According to a campaign spokesperson, after seeing her bumper sticker supporting McCain, the suspect said, 'Oh you're with McCain, you're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson.'"

After repeatedly hitting, kicking and threatening the woman, the McCain camp says the suspect carved a "B" in her cheek for "Barack" Obama.

According to the police report, the officer confirmed that he "observed the wound on the right side of [her] face.

Finally, I asked the troubling question about how Obama will ensure a tax break for 95% of people--despite the fact that about 40% don't pay income taxes. He struggled with that one for a while. Again, it seemed to be a foreign concept to him, like no one had ever raised the subject before.

He told me to wait while he talked to his supervisor. I could overhear bits of a conversation in which he referred to me, rather politely, as "a difficult one." (At least he didn't call me THAT one.)

When he returned to the phone, he informed me that Obama would reach the 95% figure by initiating taxes on the 40% who don't pay income taxes now, so that he could later give them their promised tax break.

I don't know which is scarier: that the young man knew so little about the policies of the candidate for whom he had volunteered to work, that the young man's supervisor apparently knew little more, or that the talking heads say that young people like him could determine this election.

By now you’ve heard of Joe the Plumber. Now, hear about Jessica Hughes, a resident of Texas, a former Marine and the mother of three. She was contacted by Secret Service after an Obama supporter falsely claimed she made death threats.

Jessica, on her way home from the emergency room where she took her young son who was diagnosed with a mild concussion after an accident was driving when her cell phone rings and it is an Obama campaign worker attempting to solicit her vote.

Two secret Service agents arrived at the home of Jessica Hughes about two weeks ago, inquiring about the remarks. Apparently, Hughes had been contacted by an Obama campaign staffer over the phone — which led to a verbal disagreement.

The staffer claims that Hughes said, “I will never support Obama and he will wind up dead on a hospital floor.”

Due to the threatening nature of the report, the Secret Service decided to investigate the matter.
