Anti-atheism might have found its ugliest public expression during an episode in the Illinois Legislature this spring. As atheist activist Rob Sherman attempted to testify against a $1 million state grant to a church, Rep. Monique Davis railed, "This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God, where people believe in protecting their children. … It's dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists! … You have no right to be here! We believe in something. You believe in destroying!"

Lest we dismiss the legislator's harangue as an anomaly, consider the organizations that bar atheists from membership — the Boy Scouts of America and American Legion, to name two, as well as some local posts of the Veterans of Foreign Wars — and the conspicuous absence of openly atheist politicians on the national stage.

America's Pastor is supposedly open-minded, tolerant. But his media image is belied by what he says on Sundays.

Here is how evangelical superstar Pastor Rick Warren described his philosophy this August: “I have never been considered a part of the religious right, because I don't believe politics is the most effective way to change the world.”

The mainstream press has been almost universally eager to indulge his self-description. Nicholas Kristof, the New York Times columnist, called Warren “an evangelical liberals can love.” Newsweek named Warren one of fifteen “people who make America great.” And even The Nation published an article puffing Warren as “America’s Pastor,” a figure who “disassociates himself from the religious right, noting that he shares its position on social issues but doesn't want to focus on them. He focuses on poverty, disease and aid to Africa.”

The problem of consciousness is understanding how this world is there for us. It shows up in our senses. It shows up in our thoughts. Our feelings and interests and concerns are directed to and embrace this world around us. We think, we feel, the world shows up for us. To me that's the problem of consciousness. That is a real problem that needs to be studied, and it's a special problem.

A useful analogy is life. What is life? We can point to all sorts of chemical processes, metabolic processes, reproductive processes that are present where there is life. But we ask, where is the life? You don't say life is a thing inside the organism. The life is this process that the organism is participating in, a process that involves an environmental niche and dynamic selectivity. If you want to find the life, look to the dynamic of the animal's engagement with its world. The life is there. The life is not inside the animal. The life is the way the animal is in the world.

Obama will preside over the greatest expansion of the federal government since the New Deal tilting it farther to the extreme left and towards the model of a failed european socialist state with all the concomitant dependence on government welfare. The current financial crisis will be used as an excuse for government to spread its tentacles over every aspect of our national life. He has already displayed a disturbing inclination towards suppressing criticism which will continue with the imposition of the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" on broadcasters. His tax policies and the financing required for his universal health-care program, if unaltered, will plunge us into a depression. His party of idealogue obstructionists will prohibit off-shore drilling.

This vote was an unprecedented act of national political suicide and a vengeful self-inflicted wound that has cut to the very core of our democratic constitutional republic. In the meantime, this one-teleprompter-speech-wonder can make all the customary and reassuring declarations he wants but as this national tragedy unfolds the people will not discover who has been elected until after he enters the Oval Office.

To paraphrase Melanie Phillips of the British journal, The Spectator: a Marxist radical who all his life has been mentored by, sat at the feet of, worshiped with, befriended, endorsed the philosophy of, funded and been in turn funded, politically promoted and supported by a nexus comprising black power anti-white racists, jew-haters, revolutionary Marxists, unrepentant former terrorists, subversives, and a convicted Chicago fraud artist and influence peddler, is now the President Elect of the United States.

The battle to define the outcome of the 2008 elections began in earnest just seconds after the TV networks projected Barack Obama the winner. Most commentators focused on the historic nature of Obama's win, while conservatives immediately dropped their accusations that Obama advocated socialism and instead insisted that he was a center-right candidate.

Congress, though now controlled by large Democratic majorities, is a right-leaning institution, we have been told.

A report from the Campaign for America's Future (CAF) released last week, however, suggested the opposite. "[The election] was, in fact, a sea-change election that marked a turn from the failed philosophy of the past decades, an end of the Reagan era," the report claimed. "2008 marks the rejection of trickle-down economics and the embrace of policy designed to bring prosperity from the bottom up."

Indiana Textbook Commission member charges that Robin Hood is communistic

In an example of the absurd lengths to which the "Red Scare" in America is going, Mrs. Thomas J. White of the Indiana Textbook Commission, calls for the removal of references to the book Robin Hood from textbooks used by the state's schools.

Mrs. Young claimed that there was "a Communist directive in education now to stress the story of Robin HoodÝbecause he robbed the rich and gave it to the poor. That's the Communist line. It's just a smearing of law and order and anything that disrupts law and order is their meat." She went on to attack Quakers because they "don't believe in fighting wars." This philosophy, she argued, played into communist hands. Though she later stated that she never argued for the removal of texts mentioning the story from school textbooks, she continued to claim that the "take from the rich and give to the poor" theme was the "Communist's favorite policy."

In an interview with the Associated Press earlier this week, Broun admitted to calling the future commander-in-chief a 'Marxist' at a recent Rotary club meeting, and said Obama has expressed support for policies similar to those of Hitler.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Broun told the AP. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may– may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."

Broun was specifically referring to a July speech by Obama, where the then-Democratic presidential nominee said he supports a civilian force helping the military when it comes to national security: "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded [as the military],"

That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did.

Remembrance Day

Did the vets who died fighting for freedom and democracy say that if, in the future, a President started some wars, attacked America’s freedoms, and let his buddies help themselves to tons of taxpayers’ money, that it was worth their sacrifice if he just walked away without once saying “sorry!”?

Today, Rush and Bill O’Reilly, etc. can glibly explain how such conduct would indeed be the very things that were worth the boys’ lives.

Bush has become the patron saint of fuck-ups and thereby a great inspiration to weasels who emulate war profiteers who can ignore completely the word “conscience.”
The terrorist leaders are ridiculed for telling their disciples that their deaths are commendable because they help spread the basic philosophy, but when America’s President turns war into a cash grab, the Rush Sean and Bill crowd stress that it is still possible to become wealthy in America.

I recall the early Saturday morning when the Willimantic Chronicle, where I worked at the time, got a call that the AG was coming out to investigate a storage facility. I had pulled the Sat a.m. shift that week, and dutifully went with a photographer to see what was up. Not a whole lot, as it turned out -- but it was clear at that moment that the man was going to run for the US. Senate.

Lieberman was born in Stamford, Connecticut on February 24, 1942 and attended public schools there. He received his bachelor's degree from Yale College in 1964 and his law degree from Yale Law School in 1967.

Lieberman was elected to the Connecticut State Senate in 1970 and served there for 10 years, including the last 6 as Majority Leader. From 1982 to 1988, he served as Connecticut's 21st Attorney General.
