“You may be really nervous about this race right now, but this is something we do for fun and it is not pressure,” Donnelly later said. “Nobody is shooting at you in battle. History gives us real examples of pressure. Go back to the Great Depression. Pressure is not having a job with five starving kids. This is a race. All you have to do is try your very best. Hard to believe - this was Michael Jackson. He was born August 28, 1958 - one of 9 kids. His father reportedly nicknamed him "Big Nose".

Mike was born a cute African-American guy. "Normal", if you will, and very talented. Despite the current, sad stories about his lonely, sad childhood, Mike grew up surrounded by famous people and an adoring public. At age 5, Mike and his brothers were the amazing 'Jackson 5'. They played locally, then in New York and Philly. They were "discovered" by Gladys Knight and pianist Billy Taylor at the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem. By age 11, Mike was a Superstar. At age 13 he went solo and had his first #1 hit at 14 with "Ben" (a touching love song to a rat). Who knew he'd get addicted to plastic surgery, face accusations of child molestation and end up America's Most Famous Sideshow?

GOP Election Board members have been tossed out of polling stations in at least half a dozen polling stations in Philadelphia because of their party status.

A Pennsylvania judge previously ruled that court-appointed poll watchers could be NOT removed from their boards by an on-site election judge, but that is exactly what is happening, according to sources on the ground.

It is the duty of election board workers to monitor and guard the integrity of the voting process.

Denying access to the minority (in this case Republican) poll watchers and inspectors is a violation of Pennsylvania state law. Those who violate the law can be punished with a misdemeanor and subjected to a fine of $1,000 and sent to prison between one month and two years.

Some of the precincts where Republicans have been removed are: the 44th Ward, 12th and 13th divisions; 6th Ward, 12th division; 32nd Ward, Division 28.

Any vestiges of the belief that all hockey moms (or fans, for that matter) support Sarah Palin were effectively destroyed earlier this month when Palin dropped the first puck at a Flyers-Rangers game and was booed by Philly fans. But in case you still have doubts, one more hockey mama for Obama weighs in with a hilarious rendition of "Don't speak for me Sarah Palin," sung to the tune of "Evita's" "Don't Cry for Me Argentina." The basic message? "My kid plays hockey, and I wear lipstick/ but I'm a thinker, and you're a dipstick." Touché.

God love him, Joe from Scranton (which is west of Philly, and therefore a bastion of racism according to Democratic Rep. Joe Murtha) has decided he knows why so many undecided voters remain at this late date.

They are racist. All of them.

Here's Joe at a San Francisco fundraiser making the point:

Undecided people are having a difficult time just culturally making the change, making the move for the first African American president in the history of the United States of America," the Democratic vice-presidential nominee said at a San Francisco fundraiser Saturday evening.

Interesting the views that emerge from San Francisco fundraisers, isn't it? I guess Biden is just bitterly clinging to the oratorical example of the head of the ticket.

In Philly, Conservative Talk Radio Host Backs Obama

On his talk show on WPHT today, conservative Philadelphian Michael Smerconish endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Smerconish did so by reading a couple paragraphs from his pending op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"I’ve decided," he said. "My conclusion comes after reading the candidates’ memoirs and campaign platforms, attending both party conventions, interviewing both men multiple times, and watching all primary and general election debates.

"Terrorism. The candidates disagree as to where to prosecute the war against Islamic fundamentalists. Barack Obama is correct in saying the front line in that battle is not Iraq, it’s the Afghan-Pakistan border. Osama bin Laden crossed that border from Tora Bora in December 2001, and we stopped pursuit. The Bush administration outsourced the hunt for bin Laden and, instead, invaded Iraq.

so we have no business being there

Miles Davis Quintet On The Tonight Show - November 1955

From: The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions (4-CDs) (Concord Records - 2006).

Here’s a little blast from the past; a recording from Miles Davis’s 1955 appearance on the Tonight show, with the show’s original host, Steve Allen. This clip is a special feature within a new 4-CD box set being released this week, featuring all the studio recordings from the Miles Davis Quintet between 1955 and 56 that were recorded for Prestige Records. The band of course is legendary: John Coltrane on tenor, Red Garland on Piano, Philly Joe Jones on drums and Paul Chambers on bass.

The thing that gets me about this recording is how incredibly uncomfortable and nervous Steve Allen was in introducing the band. He was stumbling all over himself, with a strong sense of trepidation in his voice. Probably because this was one of the first nationally televised programs to ever feature bebop, which was considered way far-out to the American mainstream audience of the time. Also, it should be noted that there were very few black entertainers visible on TV in those days, particularly anyone with such an uncompromising attitude as Miles Davis. (Props to Steve Allen for having the balls to bring these guys on.)

The band rips right into it from the start, with a hard-driving rendition of Max Is Making Wax. Allen then comes on and tries to make a little smalltalk with Miles, which doesnt go anywhere, followed by Allen awarding Davis a 1955 Downbeat Award. The quintet then goes into a sweet rendition of It Never Entered My Mind.

A compelling piece of musical and TV history.

Philadelphia Police Caught Beating Unarmed Victims

In Philadelphia, six police officers have been removed from street patrols after they were videotaped beating three unarmed African American men. A local television news helicopter captured the scene of around a dozen officers pulling the victims from their car and kicking and punching them as they lay on the ground. The beating occurred after the shooting death of a police officer who had been pursuing three robbery suspects, two of whom were later caught. The three victims have all been charged with assault, conspiracy and endangering another person. The officers who beat them have not been charged.

If you can't watch the clip, here's how The Philadelphia Inquirer describes its contents:

The video shows police cars chasing a gold sedan to a stop in the 3700 block of North Second Street, where about six to eight officers, with guns drawn, swarm over the sedan. As more officers race up to the car, one beats the passenger's side with a baton.

All four doors are pulled open, and as each of the three men is pulled from the car, he is tossed to the street and surrounded by three to five officers. Three or four officers begin trying to handcuff the driver and can be seen delivering at least 13 kicks to his head and sides, as well as several punches.

The passenger pulled from the rear seat is kicked by four officers and struck four or five times by an officer who appears to be wielding a baton. A canine officer stands nearby, restraining an excited police dog.
