How much money can bats save farmers with natural pest control services? That's what Thomas Kunz, a professor at the Center for Ecology and Conservation Biology at Boston University, wants to know.

Each night, more than 100 million free-tailed bats disperse from caves and bridges in south-central Texas to forage for food. They ingest enormous quantities of insects, which include a variety of destructive agricultural pests such as the fall armyworm, cabbage looper, tobacco budworm, corn earworm and cotton bollworm. The magnitude at which these pests can affect crops economically is enormous, but if farmers can determine how bats impact these pests, the number of pesticide applications could be reduced.

"If bats are not protected in Mexico, where they winter, they won't be as effective in consuming agricultural pests here in the U.S.," Morton says. "Education on both sides of the border is essential to maintaining healthy populations of these highly beneficial animals."

Leslie Owen Collier was surrounded by cattle at a livestock auction when his cell phone rang. It was the White House.

Twelve years after pleading guilty to federal charges in the deaths of three bald eagles, Collier learned his name was cleared: He was pardoned by President George W. Bush.

"I guess I was humbled is the best way to say it _ I never thought it would happen," Collier, 50, said in a phone interview this week. "It was emotional. I almost came to tears, really."

So he put out hamburger meat laced with the pesticide Furadan in an effort to kill the coyotes. It worked; seven coyotes died.

The problem occurred when the eagles fed on the coyotes' carcasses. They died, too. So did a red-tailed hawk and a great horned owl, among other animals.

The birds are federally protected and killing them is illegal. Collier said the crime became a felony when the second eagle died. He pleaded guilty in late 1995 and received two years of probation.

FDA: Melamine okay in baby formula

The FDA today said that it was ok to have melamine in baby formula. Melamine is a plastic manufactured by Monsanto chemical company which dates back to the 1950 and the petro-chemistry revolution. Melamine is commonly used in counter tops and for the interior of buses.
Melamine is an organic base and a trimer of cyanamide, with a 1,3,5-triazine skeleton. Like cyanamide, it contains 66% nitrogen by mass and, if mixed with resins, has fire retardant properties due to its release of nitrogen gas when burned or charred, and has several other industrial uses. Melamine is also a metabolite of cyromazine, a pesticide.

Melamine is combined with formaldehyde to produce melamine resin, a very durable thermosetting plastic used in Formica, and melamine foam, a polymeric cleaning product.

Melamine combines with cyanuric acid to form melamine cyanurate, which has been implicated in the Chinese protein export contamination.

Piles of dead bees were discovered at the entrance of hives in early May 2008. Clothianidin was found in the tissues of 99% of the dead bees. This is the time when corn seeding takes place according to Walter Haefeker, president of the European Professional Beekeeping Association. The Julius Huehn Institute (federal agricultural research agency) stated “it can be unequivocally be concluded that a poisoning of the bees is due to a rub-off of the pesticide ingredient clothianidin from cornseeds.” This chemical is estimated to have killed two-thirds of the bees in this state.

These pesticides shouldn’t be on the market.

Increasing pesticide use is changing the profile of insect and other pests that Australian farmers must contend with, and GM crops are set to bring their own changes, say experts.

Mites like this are on the rise and are one of the harder pests to control, say researchers

Ecological geneticist Dr Andrew Weeks from the University of Melbourne and colleagues report their findings in the Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture.

In the first study of its kind, Weeks and colleagues compared recent reports of winter grain pests with those dating back as far as 1980.

In both Victoria and Western Australia they found pests such as armyworms and pea weevils have declined, but other pests such as mites and lucerne fleas have been on the rise.

"One of the big things that we found was that a couple of species of mites, which weren't even really recorded early on, had become quite prevalent now," says Weeks, who is based at the Centre for Environmental Stress and Adaptation Research.

The Italian government banned the use of several neonicotinoid pesticides that are blamed for the deaths of millions of honeybees. The Ministero del Lavoro della Salute e delle Politiche Sociali issued an immediate suspension of the seed treatment products clothianidin, imidacloprid, fipronil and thiamethoxam used in rapeseed oil, sunflowers and sweetcorn. The Italian government will start a monitoring program to further investigate the reasons of recent bee deaths.

Italy followed Germany and Slovenia which banned sales of clothianidin and imidacloprid in May. In France imidacloprid has been banned on sunflowers already since 1999. In 2003 the substance was also banned as a sweetcorn treatment. Bayer´s application for clothianidin was rejected by French authorities.

The two substances are produced by the German company Bayer CropScience and generated *800 million in 2007. Imidacloprid is Bayer´s best-selling pesticide.

German government researchers have concluded that a bestselling Bayer pesticide is responsible for the recent massive die-off of honeybees across the country’s Baden-Württemberg region. In response, the government has banned an entire family of pesticides, fueling accusations that pesticides may be responsible for the current worldwide epidemic of honeybee die-offs.

Researchers found buildup of the pesticide clothianidin in the tissues of 99 percent of dead bees in Baden-Württemberg state. The German Research Center for Cultivated Plants concluded that nearly 97 percent of honeybee deaths had been caused directly by contact with the insecticide.

“It can unequivocally be concluded that a poisoning of the bees is due to the rub-off of the pesticide ingredient clothianidin from corn seeds,” said the federal agricultural research agency, the Julius Kuehn Institute.

“Pollution is making children fat, say experts”, reported The Independent on Sunday. It said that a new Spanish study found that exposure to a range of common chemicals while in the womb sets up a child to ‘grow up stout’. The newspaper suggests that this may be helping to drive the worldwide obesity epidemic. The study measured levels of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a pesticide, in the umbilical cords of children and found that those with the highest levels were more than twice as likely to be obese six years later.

To do this, the researchers looked at the concentration of HCB in the umbilical cord blood of 405 children born in Menorca from mid 1997 to mid 1998.

Infant height and weight was measured at birth and feeding practices were reported by mothers in interviews at six months and one year after birth. The children’s height and weight were measured when they were 6.5 years old.

Global Action to Ban Lindane

Banned in at least 52 countries and severely restricted in more than 33 others, the insect-killing chemical lindane is long overdue to be phased out in every country of the world.

Activists from Mexico, Canada and the U.S. served a "lindane lunch" to government representatives. Lindane contaminates traditional foods from the Arctic and common foods such as cookies and nuts.

Mexico agreed to phase out all uses under the plan, and the U.S. withdrew agricultural uses. Pharmaceutical use continues in the U.S. and Canada, with all countries making a commitment under the Action Plan to focus on developing and promoting safer alternatives for these remaining uses.

Study: Organic food not more nutritional

However, one possible spanner in the works for the organic sector could be the results of a new study by the University of Copenhagen which revealed that organic foods contained no more nutrients than non-organic foods grown with the use of pesticides.

Researchers studied five different crops -- carrots, kale, mature peas, apples and potatoes -- which were cultivated both organically (without pesticides) and conventionally (with the use of pesticides) and found that there was no higher level of trace elements in the food grown organically.

Study leader Dr Susanne Bügel said: "No systematic differences between cultivation systems representing organic and conventional production methods were found across the five crops so the study does not support the belief that organically grown foodstuffs generally contain more major and trace elements than conventionally grown foodstuffs."
