All Web sites, whether classic or not, tend to follow the same evolutionary path: A site is conceived in the mind of an unusually intelligent person; starts off as a buggy alpha project; evolves into a less-buggy beta project; develops into a full-blown meme usually sometime around launch (Google betas excepted); and swirls around the Internet for a while. That's where the path diverges: the site can fade away into uncoolness and disuse, cater to a niche of hard-core users, or mature into a classic Web site that is used and loved by millions.

Unlike our list of Top 100 Undiscovered Web Sites, you've probably heard of most of these sites, but we hope there are some new finds and old friends here for you to enjoy.

Will Digital Distribution Kill Game Stores?

But it's important to keep in mind that digital distribution also indicates that the game may well come loaded down with DRM -- and that it's harder, if not impossible, to resell it or install it on another computer.

GameStop is easily the king of specialty gaming retail in the US. With thousands of stores, a huge workforce, and the ability to push specific games via in-store promotions, it may not be well loved, but it is well traveled. The problem is that fewer and fewer PC games are being sold in stores, with the success of digital distribution platforms like Steam and the EA download service. Meanwhile, consoles are starting to catch up with Sony by offering full, big-name titles like Burnout: Paradise for sale online. Is GameStop scared of its business model, brick-and-mortar game stores, dying out? Not one bit. Whether that's hubris or the inability to change is an unanswered question.

Mere weeks ago, a German rating group leaked information regarding new content called “Wrath of the Lich King.”

Lifelike Animation Breakthrough

clipper's remarks: AMD last week released a new chip with a billion transistors that will be able to show off creations such as Emily by allowing a much greater number of computations per second. "If you're trying to process the graphics in a photo-realistic animation, in real-time, there's a lot of computation involved," said Mr Koduri.

He said that AMD's new chip - the Radeon HD 4870 X2 - was able to process 2.4 teraflops of information per second, meaning it had a capability similar to a computer that - only 12 years ago - would have filled a room. AMD's chip fits inside a standard PC.

But he said that the line between what was real and what was rendered would not be blurred completely until 2020.

Extraordinarily lifelike characters are to begin appearing in films and computer games thanks to a new type of animation technology.

Emily - the woman in the above animation - was produced using a new modelling technology that enables the most minute details of a facial expression to be captured and recreated.

She is considered to be one of the first animations to have overleapt a long-standing barrier known as 'uncanny valley' - which refers to the perception that animation looks less realistic as it approaches human likeness.

"Ninety per cent of the work is convincing people that the eyes are real," Mike Starkenburg, chief operating officer of Image Metrics, said.

"The subtlety of the timing of eye movements is a big one. People also have a natural asymmetry - for instance, in the muscles in the side of their face.

Things I love about my imac:

1 We're three months into our relationship and I still think she looks great
2 She's does everything for me without complaining. No crashing when I run multiple apps, no stuttering when I convert multiple movies files etc

3 I love her friends eg Pages, Omnioutliner, Quicksilver

Things that annoy me about my imac:

1 Considering how much she whined at me to make the switch, moving all my files and data from my Windows PC was not easy.
2 She's no fun. I can't play games with her. Please don't suggest Bootcamp. Windows is cheating.
3 She's financially demanding. She wants EUR80 alone for MobileMe? Who is she kidding?

Almost two years ago, Halo 2 was announced for Windows Vista. For many Halo players of the PC community, this marked a chance to get what we had always dreamed of - a chance for those who never owned the original Xbox version to experience what made one of the top selling games of all time. Community websites started up as havens for the members to take the game to its full potential and push it to the bleeding edge.

It is now almost half a year since the game's release. The community is in a stalemate. Bugs infest the game to the point where it becomes unplayable. Difficulties are arising with many of the game's inner-workings. Critical features are missing which, without, will lead to the utmost failure of this title. What was once a dream had become a nightmare - one which we cannot wake up from.

Drill instructors drive young men through military-style obstacle courses, counselors lead group sessions, and there are even therapeutic workshops on pottery and drumming.

But these young people are not battling alcohol or drugs. Rather, they have severe cases of what many in this country believe is a new and potentially deadly addiction: cyberspace.

South Korea boasts of being the most wired nation on earth. In fact, perhaps no other country has so fully embraced the Internet. Ninety percent of homes connect to cheap, high-speed broadband, online gaming is a professional sport, and social life for the young revolves around the “PC bang,” dim Internet parlors that sit on practically every street corner.
