South Carolina has earned a new dubious title: the only state with an all-male Senate.

Tuesday, all three female candidates vying for seats in the upper chamber were defeated.

Rep. Joan Brady, a Richland County Republican and incoming chairwoman of the Women Legislative Caucus, said Tuesday’s results were disappointing.

“Women do have a different perspective that is needed in the Legislature,” Brady said. “They look at the bigger picture. They look at issues from a family perspective.”

It’s also an equity issue. Women represent more than half of the state’s population.

Prior to Tuesday’s vote, South Carolina already ranked last among states in terms of women in elected office.

The 46-member chamber has not been all male since 1980, when Elizabeth Patterson, wholater served in the U.S. House of Representatives, took a seat in the state Senate. There are no women in federal or constitutional office in the Palmetto State.

At the same time the Republic began declining, a right-leaning blog called espressopundit.com emerged and devoted considerable coverage to the Republic's demise. Blog owner Greg Patterson had access to inside information, revealing in advance layoffs and other shakeups at the paper, accompanied by photographs of a sinking ship.

In a joint press release, the two said in part, "the Arizona Republic board has been one of the biggest voices against steps we have successfully taken to reduce Valley crime.

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — An ex-convict who thought he was being robbed gunned down a 12-year-old trick-or-treater, spraying nearly 30 rounds with an assault rifle from inside his home after hearing a knock on the door, police said Saturday.

Quentin Patrick, 22, is accused of killing 12-year-old T.J. Darrisaw on Friday night. T.J.'s 9-year-old brother, Ahmadre Darrisaw, and their father, Freddie Grinnell, were injured but were released after being treated at a hospital.

The family attended a Halloween celebration in downtown Sumter, 45 miles east of Columbia, then stopped at Patrick's house because the porch light was on, police said. Another sibling was with them, but wasn't hurt.

Police said at least two of the boys were wearing ghoulish masks when they knocked on the door. The boys' mother and a toddler stayed in the car nearby.

Patrick emptied his AK-47, shooting at least 29 times through his front door, walls and windows after hearing the knock, Police Chief Patty Patterson said.

While Google has had failures in extending its brand (Froogle, Google Base), its collection of services that are affiliated with its mainstream search product, like Google Maps, Image Search, and desktop search, can make switching away from Google difficult for users. Costello realizes that Cuil needs to layer in additional services, but as he said to me, the company has to start somewhere.

Upshot: Cuil is certainly worth trying out.

There's a big new search engine launching Monday: Cuil. Developed and run by the husband-and-wife team of Stanford professor Tom Costello and former Google search architect Anna Patterson, it's pitched as bigger, faster, and better than Google's flagship search engine

The most important difference between Cuil and Google is its ranking system. Rather than assigning priority to pages based on inbound links as Google does ("Pagerank"), Cuil analyzes the content of Web pages to divine their relevance to a search query.

What this means, in the real world, is that Cuil results are automatically categorized.

In Cuil's canned demo, if you search for "Harry," there are different tabs for "Harry Potter" and "Prince Harry of Wales." On the Harry Potter tab, you'll get further sub-links devoted to actors, Gryffindor dorm-mates, etc. "We have a strong ontological commitment

Alaska's black leaders say they're not surprised to see Gov. Sarah Palin at the center of the controversy over injecting the race issue into the presidential campaign.

"She has no sensitivity to minorities," said the Rev. Alonzo Patterson, a Baptist minister and president of the Alaska Black Leadership Conference. "She's really inciting a lot of African-Americans to get out and vote."

Since taking office in December 2006, Palin has had a sometimes tense relationship with black leaders, who say they've been ignored in their efforts to get more minorities hired in her administration.

In Alaska, blacks chafed when Palin opposed a proclamation endorsing a festival that marks the freeing of slaves.

At one rally attended by Palin, a supporter told a black cameraman to "sit down, boy."

"It's really been like you're going to a Ku Klux Klan rally," said Javis Odom, an Anchorage minister. "Gov. Palin is really showing her true colors on the national stage."

Mark Patterson, chairman of private equity fund MattlinPatterson, told an audience of financial experts at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria this week that the U.S. could suffer up to 500 bank closures and that the chances of a new great depression are now as high as 25 per cent.

Financial conditions are “probably more challenging than at any time since 1929,” Patterson said, speaking at Dow Jones’ Private Equity Analyst Conference this week.

“We’re not in normal times. If you don’t accept that there is at least a 20 to 25 percent chance of a financial markets led depression you’re fooling yourself,” he cautioned, adding that “Saharan-like” credit markets are overwhelming companies.

Following the collapse of Lehman Brothers, Patterson warned that 300 to 500 U.S. banks are set to fail over the next three years and as a result absorb all of the FDIC’s pool of funds.

UPDATE: So much for my attempt at humor - McCain's war injuries make it very difficult for him to type.

Scientists at Penn State have developed a new computational method that they say will help them to understand how life began on Earth. The team's method has the potential to trace the evolutionary histories of proteins all the way back to either cells or viruses, thus settling the debate once and for all over which of these life forms came first.

"We have just begun to tap the potential power of this method," said Randen Patterson, a Penn State assistant professor of biology and one of the project's leaders. "We believe, if it is possible at all, that it is within our grasp to determine whether viruses evolved from cells or vice-versa."

The team is focusing on an ancient group of proteins, called retroelements, which comprise approximately 50 percent of the human genome by weight and are a crucial component in a number of diseases, including AIDS.

A group of former Google employees is hoping to outmanouvre their old boss by developing a rival search engine they claim provides a more comprehensive guide to the web.

Cuil, which went live today, was built by Anna Patterson, a former Google employee who helped create the company's index - the enormous catalogue of web pages which its scours every time someone conducts a query.

Speaking before the launch of Cuil, which is pronounced 'cool'

Cuil had solved that problem by compiling an index three times as large as Google's - searching for results across 120 billion web pages compared with Google's index of 40 billion pages

These new "It" girls don't date rock stars, don't suffer from eating disorders and don't even launch their own clothing lines. They all devoted their lives to one goal - bring home Olympic medals. Their entrance into the media spot is so refreshing, and there are several thing I'd like to thank them for:

1. Showing on TV amazingly healthy female bodies. These girls have muscles and tone, they are strong and beautiful at the same time. I almost wish some of them could walk on NY Fashion Week runways in September and show the world that healthy looking woman can be beautiful too, but I bet it's not on their agenda.

Cuil also counts former AltaVista founder Louis Monier -- who later went to eBay and then Google -- as part of the team.

These people know search. In particular, they know on-the-firing line, heavy duty, industrial strength search. Not only that, they're unleashing what appears to be a comprehensive service that anyone can use. Indeed, Google already did a blog post in reaction to Cuil and its size claims on Friday, before Cuil even launched or those claims became public. If Google's paying that much attention, then anyone should.

She believes her latest invention is even more valuable _ only this time it's not for sale.

The end result is Cuil, pronounced "cool." Backed by $33 million in venture capital, the search engine plans to begin processing requests for the first time Monday.

For starters, Cuil's search index spans 120 billion Web pages.

Patterson believes that's at least three times the size of Google's index, although there is no way to know for certain. Google stopped publicly quantifying its index's breadth nearly three years ago when the catalog spanned 8.2 billion Web pages.

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai has ordered an inquiry into allegations that 15 civilians were killed in a U.S. military strike targeting militants.

An Afghan boy believed to have been injured in a coalition bombing is placed in a stretcher Sunday.

The probe into Friday's incident on the border of Konar and Nurestan provinces came as local officials said another coalition bombing in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday killed at least 23 people and wounded 10 others who were walking to a wedding party.

U.S. military Capt. Christian Patterson said he had heard no reports that civilians had been killed in Friday's incident.

Among the civilians that were reportedly killed in Friday's U.S. helicopter attack were five members of one family: a doctor and at least two children, the spokesman said.

Karzai has stepped up pressure on his U.S. allies to take more precautions when carrying out military operations against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
