A twenty-seven year old girl who was kissing her boyfriend on railway lines has died after being hit by a passenger train going from the southern resort of Anapa to Siberia’s Krasnoyarsk. Some witnesses say she noticed the train in the last second and managed to push the boy away from danger, but didn’t have time to save herself.

The tragedy happened near on a platform in the city of Novosibirsk, police informed. Absorbed in their passion, the couple didn’t notice anything around them as they were kissing on the rails. The driver was signaling, a railway station worker was blowing a whistle, and a woman on the platform said she was crying out to them, but they didn’t hear because a freight train was passing by on the neighbouring rail.

If the witnesses’ statements were true, the girl saved the boy’s life for the price of her own one – he has only a leg injury.

When the official counts are in, Gans said, the final tally may approach 129 million, which would be almost 62 percent of eligible voters, up from 60.6 percent four years ago but below the 1964 turnout rate of 64 percent of eligible voters under Gans's formula.

In counts posted as of late yesterday, Obama led McCain 67 million votes to 58.5 million, with 1.7 million votes cast for minor party candidates and write-ins. That is a popular-vote margin of about 6.7 percentage points.

Other factors, including down-ballot contests for congressional seats, state offices, and statewide ballot questions also might have affected turnout in some states.

While some states trumpeted high turnout figures based on the number of registered voters, neither Gans nor McDonald use voter registration figures as the basis for determining eligible voters because the quality and maintenance of current voter lists varies greatly from state to state.

Turnout in last week's election increased from four years ago but fell far short of some forecasts largely because many Republican voters either stayed home or left blank the presidential section of their ballots.

"I looked at the significant increase in registration and the long lines at the early-voting polling places," said Gans, who has been studying turnout rates for 36 years. "It turned out the intensity was one-sided; it was on the Democrats' side."

McDonald concurred, saying, "It became more evident to voters at the end that Barack Obama was going to win. That probably tamped down the turnout and disproportionately affected the Republicans."

As of yesterday, more than 127.1 million votes had been recorded in unofficial state tallies, many of which did not include some uncounted mail-in or provisional ballots, a Globe review of the websites of state election agencies showed.

New brain imaging studies show that people who view pictures of someone they hate display activity in distinct areas of the brain that, together, may be thought of as a hate circuit.

The investigators showed that the ‘hate circuit’ is distinct from those related to emotions such as fear, threat and danger — although it shares a part of the brain associated with aggression. The circuit is also quite distinct from that associated with romantic love, though it shares at least two common structures with it.

“Yet to the biologist, hate is a passion that is of equal interest to love. Like love, it is often seemingly irrational and can lead individuals to heroic and evil deeds. How can two opposite sentiments lead to the same behaviour?”

Viewing a hated person showed activity in distinct areas of the brain that, together, may be thought of as a hate circuit.

The man, identified only by his family name Lee, sat down to play the online battle simulation game Starcraft at an internet cafe in the southern city of Taegu last Wednesday morning and stayed there for the next three days, stopping only for brief naps or toilet breaks.

South Korean newspapers reported that Lee had recently been fired from his job because he spent too much time playing computer games. When he failed to return home by Friday, however, his mother asked his former colleagues to find him.

When they reached the cafe, Lee told his friends that he would finish the game and go home. He died a few minutes later.

Computer games are enormously popular in South Korea and professional gamers can earn big money through sponsorships and television stations devoted to broadcasting matches.

What They Tried to Prove:
That they were the ironmen of the 80s video game scene.

The Method:
Jeff Dailey and Peter Burkowski were teenagers and avid video gamers, aged 19 and 18 respectively. Their game of choice was the popular arcade hit "Berzerk," in which players control a stick-figure character who is trapped in a perilous maze populated by ambiguously-shaped robot enemies.

Jeff and Peter both had a passion for the game that bordered on dangerous obsession. Fatal obsession, you might say. Fatal Attraction you would not say, because it wouldn't make any sense in this context.

What They Actually Proved:

In 1981, Jeff Dailey died of a heart attack after posting a dazzling high score of 16,660. A year later, Peter Burkowski achieved two similar high scores, and also died of a heart attack shortly after.

What is apparently real is video game addiction, a sickness of the mind which also claimed the life of 28-year-old South Korean man Lee Seung Seop

This Election Was Personal - And Angry

This election was exhausting. The campaigns were passionate in a time when deep fears griped each of us.

Even George Bush supporters believe he was treated unfairly by world events beyond his control - but those events happened to all of us.

All of us, Americans and our fellow earthly citizens, have been deeply impacted by the past eight years. It makes no difference if Bush was the cause or merely the victim. Each of us have lived through some of the most traumatic events in history. Each of us took the outcome of this election personally.

But there it was, the world is not on hold during these elections.

The dread of a dismal economic future was felt around the world and passions flared.

Fear of the outcome was driving the passion

But the passions remain. Deep passion does not dissolve by merely counting the votes.

We continue to see deep anger

We cannot discount the anger.

We felt this ourselves.

This election became personal.
