Social participation and social support networks are paramount to long term positive outcomes and psychological wellbeing for older people [25,26]. A social context for physical activity and activity of a moderate rather than vigorous intensity promotes participation among older people [27]. Sedentary older people are more socially isolated than those participating in regular physical activity [28]. Continued support is important to interventions achieving long lasting change in exercise behaviour [29].

A social context to the physical activity intervention may be important to promote participation of older people. As depression is associated with poor participation in physical activity and health promotion programmes [32] increased effort in recruitment will be needed to engage older people with depression.

DevLearn 08 Keynote: Tim O’Reilly

Tim O’Reilly, Web 2.0 guru, talked to us about what web 2.0 is and led us to his implications for what we do. He started off talking about tracking the ‘alpha geek’. These are the folks who manage to thrive and innovate despite us, rather than because of us. He’s essentially built O’Reilly on watching what these folks do, analyzing the underlying patterns, and figuring out what’s key.

key competencies going forward being machine learning, statistics, and design. It isn’t about well-structured data, but about finding the nuggets in messy data. And it is about design as an “architecture of participation” that gets users to act in the ways you’d like.

clipper's remarks: When I read the questions on my Fl. ballot, I thought, “Why is Prop 8 there in all it's intolerance?” This election should be about issues not the same old worn out divisions, propagandized by the religious right for far too long. The GUNS, GAYS AND GOD mantra Karl Rove and his like, peddled, until the United States did not resemble anything UNITED, more like The Divided States of Amer. How naive of me, believing their divisive plan didn’t work and was therefore, over. With Separation of church & state a survivor. But here it was a religious question written into a civil ballot. Then, I thought, PROP 8 WILL SURELY BE DEFEATED... Wrong again. What will it take to keep religion out of the lives of people who do not wish to buy into it? What will it take to keep the prying eyes of the law out of our sexual orientation? It probably will never end but when the blind faith of religion wishes to erase that separation, we who are in possession of common sense must always fight back.

Mormons And Catholics Upset At Being The Target Of Prop 8 Protests

Hypocrisy much? The Church of Jesus of Christ of Latter-day Saints is unhappy about the fact that the media spotlight is trained on its participation in making Prop 8 happen.

In an official statement on the church's web site, bearing false witness and hypocrisy is the order of the day.

No one on either side of the question should be vilified, harassed or subject to erroneous information.

clipper's remarks: Despite a record-setting early vote throng, the overall participation supposedly decreased by 11% - the lowest participation by Alaskans in any presidential race ever! How could that be? Further, polls turned out way wrong, only here. Pre election polls had both Mark Begich-D and Ethan Berkowitz-D solidly beating incumbents Senator Ted Stevens and Congressman Don Young by at least 6-10 points. Stevens is currently ahead by 3,353 votes with 49,000 ballots left to count. Berkowitz, however, is behind by 16,887 votes; a 51-43 margin.

Stolen Election from Alaska?

Four years ago, 313,592 out of 474,740 registered voters in Alaska participated in the election-a 66% turnout. Taking into account 49,000 outstanding ballots, on Tuesday 272,633 out of 495,731 registered Alaskans showed up at the polls; a turnout of 54.9%. That's a decrease of more than 11% in voter turnout even though passions ran high for and against Barack Obama, as well as for and against Sarah Palin!

with 4 days left to vote early, 15,000 Alaskans showed up-shattering the old record set in 2004 by 28%

Despite that, we're supposed to believe that overall participation DECREASED by 11%. Not only that, but this historic election both nationally and for Alaska HAD THE LOWEST ALASKA TURNOUT FOR A PRESIDENTIAL RACE EVER!!!

In the balance hangs the fate of Alaska's Senate and House seats. We still don't know if we have elected the now convicted felon Ted Stevens, or Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich.

By engaging in civic responsibility, citizens ensure and uphold certain democratic values written in the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Those values or duties include justice, freedom, equality, diversity, authority, privacy, due process, property, participation, truth, patriotism, human rights, rule of law, tolerance, mutual assistance, self restraint and self respect. John McCain, Obama's Republican opponent, promptly congratulated the winner, vowed to help him and told his supporters to accept the outcome. Obama thanked and praised McCain for his spirit. Political opponents in Thailand, on the other hand, attack each other any way they can. Conditions must be laid down just to start a political dialogue.

Obama credited his success to donors who supported him no matter how much or little money they could give. His singling out for praise of a 106-year-old woman who made a great effort to vote could also make Thailand's genuine advocates of democracy envious of the Americans' participation.

The acceptance speech by Barack Obama, the first African-American ever elected to the US presidency, could stab at the hearts of many Thais, especially considering our present political situation.

"Americans have sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of red states and blue states. We are and always will be the United States of America," he said.

In Thailand, red and yellow are definitely divided. Scenes of yellow at our besieged Government House for months now and of red in Rajamangala Stadium last Saturday could correspond to blue and red in the US.

The help Obama mentioned means Americans joining hands to bring the nation through any difficulties to be faced, now and in the future.

Obama mentioned the fighting and pain that Americans had endured before reaching this historic day

Americans have fought for 232 years, while Thai democracy is only 76 years old.

Maybe Thais should look on the positive side and hope for such political development.

Black leaders from the Civil Rights struggle days of Martin Luther King have been on TV. They all say the same thing: They never thought they would live to see such a day.

And with pride say that now their children can see pictures of a black family in the White House.

And this is all they wanted, every wanted: equality, full participation in America, to see their story as fully integrated and seen as part of the American story.

Several trials have investigated treatments for milder depressive states, with some success [3,8]. However these treatments, which include antidepressant medication and brief psychotherapy, involve the participation of health professionals. An approach that does not further burden clinical resources is preferable, as there is already a large group of people with major depression who do not receive treatment [9], and treating these people deserves priority over those with subthreshold symptoms. An alternative approach is self-help that can be applied by the individuals affected without the need for professional guidance.
