In New York City, 97% of corporate access points had encryption in place (76% last year). In Paris, 94% of corporate access points were encrypted - although in London, 20% of all business access points continue to be completely unprotected.

Tags: wireless, wifi, security, 802.11, encryption

<clipSource>http://www.ispreview.co.uk/news/EkkVkpkFuEaRNFKwsG.html</clipSource>

Medvedev: Ready To Respond If U.S. Ends Missile Plan

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clipper's remarks: "We hope to create frank and honest relations with the new administration and resolve problems that we were not able to resolve with the current administration," he said.

Iran, Iraq, Russia, all have extended a hand of peace towards America. Obama had better not screw up this opportunity to make right some of all Bush's wrongs. As Bush once said:

"Either you are with us, or you are against us."

If America continues to choose to threaten the security of Europe with their paranoid evil plans, I will know for sure that America is the true enemy of the whole world. Russia are closer neighbours to us, than the US and I for one, (among many others here in Dk), trust them a hell of a lot more, than we'll ever trust America.

Get Obama to stop the plans for the stupid paranoid damned missile shield.

The ball is in America's court.
PARIS (Reuters) - Muslim scholars make a rare visit to the Vatican next week to discuss with Pope Benedict and Roman Catholic experts how to overcome mutual suspicion and ignorance between Christianity and Islam.

Twenty-four signatories of A Common Word, a Muslim call to dialogue with Christianity issued last year, will assemble in Rome from around the Islamic world for the November 4-6 talks, the first annual meeting of a new Catholic-Muslim Forum.

Tags: humane, peace, globalisn

<clipSource>http://www.reuters.com/article/inDepthNews/idUSTRE49T54420081030?feedType=RSS&feedName=inDepthNews</clipSource>

Palin and the fruit fly or just plain ignorance

clipped by: balthazarus
clipper's remarks: One might have thought that Sarah Palin would take a more active interest in one aspect of scientific research. Palin's youngest son has Down's syndrome, a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21. Although a geneticist by training, I am certainly no expert on the pathogenesis of this condition, nor the significance of Drosophila research into Down's syndrome. So, I typed "drosophila trisomy 21" into PubMed, the scholarly biomedical equivalent of Google. There were 109 results, the most recent published just the day before Palin's gaffe. The concluding sentence of that study — about the genetic cues that steer nerve fibres around during the growth of the fruit fly — suggests that the paper will "have implications for the pathogenesis of Down's syndrome".

These two are drops in the ocean of fruit fly research that have clinical relevance. Down's syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, autism, diabetes, ageing research, cancers of all types

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Palin and the fruit fly

Sarah Palin may have alienated herself from the entire basic research community

"You've heard about some of these pet projects, they really don't make a whole lot of sense and sometimes these dollars go to projects that have little or nothing to do with the public good. And by "act," they mean his house. The vacant property, purchased by Rosansky more than four years ago, sits in the Newport Shores neighborhood. Locals have long been miffed by the dwelling's battered stucco, peeling paint and occasionally knee-high weeds. In one oft-told anecdote, an opossum died inside and attracted rats."

Clip Source: latimesblogs.latimes.com

Clearly the mindset is a little different in Newport Beach. Consider this crime caper: Vonda Simon forgot to lock her Bentley before going on a trip to Paris. Inside was $500,000 work of jewelry. I think we know what happened next (as told by the Orange County Register's Andrew Galvin):

Still, Simon -– a cosmetics entrepreneur who says she worked for 20 years to buy the diamonds rings, necklaces, watches and earrings –- feels "violated, raped, sick" that someone stole a small safe containing the items, which she had left behind in the passenger seat of her Bentley. The car was parked in the garage of her home in a gated Newport Beach community, but the garage door was left open the night of the theft. Simon, 47, and her husband, Scott, 48, estimate the jewelry, including her six-carat-diamond engagement ring and dozens of other pieces, is worth more than $500,000.

On the other side of the spectrum, a Newport Beach councilman is in hot water because his house might not be nice enough.

<clipSource>http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2008/10/tales-from-the.html</clipSource>

Memo To Palin: Fruit Fly Research Led To Advances In Autism

clipped by: reimers
clipper's remarks: Palin did not specify what fruit fly research earmark she was referring to (presumably a grant for olive fruit fly research), but she is apparently unaware that scientific research with fruit flies has led to valuable discoveries that have boosted autism research, as a study at the University of North Carolina demonstrated last year:

[S]cientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine have shown that a protein called neurexin is required for..nerve cell connections to form and function correctly.

The discovery, made in Drosophila fruit flies may lead to advances in understanding autism spectrum disorders, as recently, human neurexins have been identified as a genetic risk factor for autism.

The study of fruit flies has also been used for other autism research and “revolutionize[d]” the study of birth defects.

Clip Source: thinkprogress.org

This morning, Gov.
