During the end of the Permian era 250 million years ago, global warming ran rampant on Earth, extinguishing 95 percent of life in the ocean, and 70 percent of life on land.

Through the darkest days, the planet was a barren wasteland. Ocean circulation, so vital to our modern climate, had shut off. Huge algal blooms sucked the seas dry of oxygen. Poisonous hydrogen sulfide built up to lethal concentrations in the water and may have even been belched into the atmosphere, suffocating organisms on shore.

The fossil record of the Permian-Triassic extinction is a stark one -- rocks go from teeming with life to nearly empty in the geologic blink of an eye.

"We see as many as 23 different genera of animals in some of these rocks. You'd be lucky to see that if you went out and scooped up a piece of the ocean floor today," Beatty said.

Beatty thinks wave action and storms near the shore aerated the waters, mixing life-giving oxygen into the first 50 meters (160 feet) of ocean.

Topic interested me as it has been some time since any rethinking of the Ancient Past stagnated after the Kahoutek Comet hit Earth and resulting global cooling killed off the dinosaurs. The Paleozoic Age is history's most diverse zoological period other than modern times. Learning more of this ancient past helps us understand the cycle of life and death that wipes out upwards of 92% of Earth species when the cycle occurs. The relative time-frame is every 50 million years o0r so.. The last one? The destruction caused by Kahoutek was roughly 65 million years ago.

July 28, 2008 -- Once thought temperate, the climate on Earth 300 million years ago may have gotten far colder than scientists ever suspected.

Scientists tend to think that life on the great supercontinent Pangea enjoyed weather that was similar to today's. With an ice sheet dominating the landscape near the south pole, there was certainly an occasional cold snap, but the tropics are believed to have been hot and humid

They've found evidence that a massive glacier lived near the equator

further south and closer to sea level than thought

If true,

the climate during the late Paleozoic Era was even chillier than during the last Ice Age

could also have been extremely volatile, swinging in wild cycles

Fossilised remains of a dinosaur with a big elbow could rewrite our understanding of how Australian dinosaurs evolved.

Palaeontologist Dr Steve Salisbury from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, and colleagues, say a forearm bone from a meat-eating dinosaur first found in 1989 is likely to be related to a Megaraptor from Argentina.

This is the first evidence linking Australian dinosaurs to those in other Gondwanan continents, rather than from the northern hemisphere, say the researchers in today's issue of the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Salisbury says Australian dinosaurs have generally been considered an odd breed of their own, descended from northern hemisphere ancestors and evolved in isolation.

Not only were they cut off from the north when Pangea broke up, but they were also cut off from the rest of Gondwana by some means - perhaps the harsh climate of Antarctica or a mountain range.

Earth in 250 Million Years?

Is this what will become of the Earth's surface? The surface of the Earth is broken up into several large plates that are slowly shifting. About 250 million years ago, the plates on which the present-day continents rest were positioned quite differently, so that all the landmasses were clustered together in one supercontinent now dubbed Pangea. About 250 million years from now, the plates are again projected to reposition themselves so that a single landmass dominates. The above simulation from the PALEAOMAP Project shows this giant landmass: Pangea Ultima. At that time, the Atlantic Ocean will be just a distant memory, and whatever beings inhabit Earth will be able to walk from North America to Africa.

The live audience at Sony was about 1,200, joining crowds of 2,000 each in London, Rio de Janeiro, the Great Pyramids of Egypt, Mumbai, India, and Kigali, Rwanda, with smaller gatherings in other cities. At Sony, there were big video screens and a news ticker that listed a roll call of the cities and small towns participating (Each of the films and a one-hour highlight show was put up on the web at pangeaday.org right after the broadcast.)

Audiences around the globe join for short films, speeches and one big drum circle.

STANDING FOR UNITY: Cameron Diaz presents an animated, environmentally themed short to a worldwide audience from Sony Studios in Culver City.

There was a message in the drumbeats. The final moments of the first international Pangea Day event on Saturday were big on symbolism, as seven drummers of varied cultures were linked via satellite from Stage 15 at Sony Studios to an international drum circle scattered across the planet.

"By sharing stories, we have begun the process of turning strangers into friends," filmmaker Jehane Noujaim told the U.S. studio audience in Culver City on the same soundstage where Dorothy and Toto once danced down the Yellow Brick Road. Noujaim had conceived of the idea of a multinational film festival broadcast, and it was supported through a prize from the annual TED Conference, a gathering of creative thinkers in science and culture.

I'm an idealist. I really think people can change the world... and I'm awed, beyond awed, at nature's scale, grandeur, and ingenuity. I love life's mystery. Science doesn't deliver all the answers... it still has no compelling language to begin to address sentience, for example. But the truths we're discovering about nature seem to me infinitely more inspiring than anything offered by the traditional religious myths. Alas, as a society, we haven't yet figured out a good way to celebrate these truths... or even communicate them broadly. I think that will change.

Our world is becoming ever smaller and interdependent.
