It is made in the skin coupled with UV exposure.

Low levels of vitamin D can cause muscle cramps, spasms, osteoporosis, increased risks of infections as well as diseases like Rickets and multiple sclerosis.

natural sources of vitamin D

I have started to look for this in my practice in those who get side stitches and muscle cramps. I found low vitamin D levels in these patients, and supplementation with 2,000 units per day cured their symptoms. (These people said they already were eating the above foods.)

we cannot, in everyone, pinpoint “why” they are vitamin D deficient. More research is being done to figure this out. My suggestion is that you ask to have your vitamin D levels tested at your yearly physical, along with your other labs. If they are low, a simple vitamin may be necessary to bring your level to a healthy one.

Tags: running, running-doc, vitamin-d, health, nutrition

<clipSource>http://runningdoctor.runnersworld.com/2009/03/weighing-in-on.html</clipSource>

Osteoporosis – causes and preventive measures

clipped by: Stumblerz
clipper's remarks: Osteoporosis – causes and preventive measures

Clip Source: www.stumblerz.com

Osteoporosis – causes and preventive measures

Do you feel that your bones are too weak and are prone to fractures even if little or no pressure is applied on your bones?

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become weak and also porous. Faster than expected break-down of cells in the bones and inability or delay in replacing the broken cells of the existing bones or formation of new bones is the primary reason for osteoporosis to affect you.

Many people might not be aware that the bones in our body are remodeling themselves constantly throughout our life. A process of resorption takes place in our bones wherein some of the bone cells that break down or resorbed and new bones are formed replacing the old bones that could not be resorbed.

Tags: health, healthcare

<clipSource>http://www.stumblerz.com/osteoporosis-%e2%80%93-causes-and-preventive-measures/</clipSource>

TREATING DEMENTIA, BUT OVERLOOKING ITS PHYSICAL TOLL

clipped by: ellington
clipper's remarks: DEMENTIA IS OFTEN VIEWED AS A DISEASE OF THE MIND,AN ILLNESS THAT ERASES TREASURED MEMORIES BUT LEAVES THE BODY INTACT.

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

<NYT_HEADLINE type=" " version="1.0">

Although the early stages can last for years, the life expectancy of a patient with advanced dementia is similar to that of a patient with advanced cancer.

The lack of understanding about the physical toll of dementia means that many patients near the end of life are subjected to aggressive treatments that would never be considered with another terminal illness.

Researchers at the University of Aberdeen have discovered a way to control the cells that destroy and weaken bones using a compound found in marijuana.

The university team found that cannabidiol (CBD), a major constituent in cannabis, inhibited the activity of cells that destroy bones.

Bone is a living tissue that constantly regenerates itself. This process of repair and renewal is regulated by cells called osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which form new bone and remove the old. What Causes Arthritis?" href="http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/7621.php">arthritis and osteoporosis.

Specifically, the researchers discovered that downregulation of IRF-8 (meaning that the gene produces less IRF-8 protein) increases the production of cells called osteoclasts that are responsible for breaking down bone. An osteoblast is a type of cell that is responsible for forming bone and an osteoclast is a type of cell that breaks down bony tissue (bone resorption). In humans and animals, bone formation and bone resorption are closely coupled processes involved in the normal remodeling of bone. Enhanced development of osteoclasts, however, can create canals and cavities that are hallmarks of diseases such as periodontitis, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
