Dispelling the myth of Christian America

When people say things such as "America is a Christian nation" or "We need to take America back for God," one needs to define what exactly is meant by such claims.

If it means the majority of people in America historically have identified themselves as Christians, then there's no argument.

But usually those who evoke the "Christian America" slogan have something more than counting heads in mind. They frequently espouse a view that claims America was founded as a Christian nation and that somewhere along the way we've lost that heritage and need to "take it back."

Is this view of American history correct? Were we founded as a "Christian nation?" Sadly, this myth is demonstratively false.

While some of our Founding Fathers were orthodox Christians, many others were Masons and Deists. They used similar language to refer to God, but had radically different understandings of what God was like, denying fundamental Christian doctrines

JERUSALEM - GREEK and Armenian Orthodox faithful kicked, punched and hit each other with candles on Sunday in Jerusalem's Holy Sepulchre, the church built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was buried and resurrected.

Israeli police were called as the free-for-all left several people with black eyes, bruises and bloody cuts.

A number of the faithful hit out with religious artifacts as priests tried to tear each others' robes off in the brawl.

Custody of the church itself is shared by the Greeks, Armenians and Roman Catholics, all of whom jealously guard their responsibilities under a fragile network of agreements hammered out over the centuries.

clipper's remarks: I have not problem with this. PBS puts out stuff that bears no resemblance to what I consider orthodox Christianity all the time. It's just another's religious opinion; whether secular or Islamic. But I agree with Mr. Sookdeo...how would the extremist Muslim's respond in kind? Genuine Christians rest in the truth of their Faith. No longer is there the need or an understanding that there's a Biblical mandate to demand that other's believe as we do.

There was no manger, Christ is not the Messiah, and the crucifixion never happened. A forthcoming ITV documentary will portray Jesus as Muslims see him.

Jewish Taliban: Ultra-Orthodox Vigilantes in Jerusalem

Modesty squads are roaming the streets, attacking and brutally beating people who fail to live up to a narrow religious code defining moral purity. People are afraid, and women are being victimized most of all. Is the Taliban resurgent? Well, yes, but that's not what this story is about; instead, this story is about Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem taking the "law" into their own hands and punishing people for failing to adhere to strict religious standards.

Traditionalist Muslims tend to take first place in the Oppression Olympics, getting high marks for their efforts to stifle free speech and prevent women from achieving real equality in society with conservative Christians working hard to challenge them. Jews, though, tend to be quieter — but maybe some have decided that they can give the other a real run for their money? Even conservative, evangelical Christians haven't thought to create their own Taliban-inspired morality police.

Gary B. Trudeau’s Doonesbury, which newspapers publish either with the comics or the editorial cartoons, just wrapped up a series about Iraqi Christian refugees. Roland (in this series a Fox News correspondent) is trying to cover the story of an Assyrian family in a way that is flattering for the Surge. Doonesbury treats the imaginary Iraqis with a great deal of dignity. Fox News doesn’t fare so well.

LORENZAGO DI CADORE, Italy - Pope Benedict XVI has reasserted the universal primacy of the Roman Catholic Church, approving a document released Tuesday that says Orthodox churches were defective and that other Christian denominations were not true churches.

Benedict approved a document from his old offices at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith that restates church teaching on relations with other Christians. It was the second time in a week the pope has corrected what he says are erroneous interpretations of the Second Vatican Council, the 1962-65 meetings that modernized the church.

On Saturday, Benedict revisited another key aspect of Vatican II by reviving the old Latin Mass. Traditional Catholics cheered the move, but more liberal ones called it a step back from Vatican II.

clipper's remarks: Number three on the New York Times best seller list does not surprise me. People would much rather believe all these convoluted offerings rather than the truth that a loving God actually cared enough about our pitiful selfs that He sent His only Son to die so that we might live.

Now I do not know about you but my best intentions has never led me anywhere but to despair. No matter how hard I tried I could never measure up to be GOOD enough by the so called enlightened crowd so I guess I would be doomed to forever live in despair save for the Lord Jesus Christ who came into my life and rescued me from my despair. Now I know who I belong to and therefore I am no longer looking to the enlightened crowd for my self worth.

Perhaps Chopra and all his adherents would be better served to read the 'Good Book'.

In the book, released in February by Harmony, Chopra states, "I have written what I think the New Testament means…" And what it means to Chopra, the author of more than 40 books, is quite different from the way orthodox Christians have understood it through the centuries.

Chopra believes that the "real" Jesus -- the third Jesus -- is much less than the New Testament makes him out to be.

According to Chopra, Jesus was nothing more than an adherent to what we now call New Age philosophy.

"Jesus did not physically descend from God's dwelling place … nor did he return to sit at the right hand of a literal throne," writes Chopra. "What made Jesus the Son of God was the fact that he had achieved God-consciousness."

We shouldn't discount Chopra's book and assume no one is reading it. Sadly, the opposite true. "The Third Jesus" -- full of New Age, heretical pabulum -- was ranked third March 30 on The New York Times' list for hardcover advice books.

THE number of Muslims has overtaken that of Roman Catholics for the first time, according to the Vatican.

Muslims account for 19.2% of the world's population, while Catholics make up 17.4%, according to the Vatican's new statistics yearbook, which is based on figures for 2006.

"For the first time in history we are no longer at the top: the Muslims have overtaken us," said Monsignor Vittorio Formenti, who edited the yearbook.

"While it is known that Muslim families continue to have many children, Christian families are having fewer," he told the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano.The Vatican data showed that Christians as a whole, including Orthodox and Protestant groups as well as Catholics, made up 33% of the world's population.

Applying the percentages to the 2006 world population of about 6.5 billion, Muslims would have made up 1.25 billion of the total, Catholics 1.13 billion and all Christians 2.15 billion.
