Fast-foods have been linked with a high rate of obesity in the United States over the last three decades and consequently with a high rate of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Maybe it’s time for you to learn more about what is really served in you fast-food. You might be surprised to find out that many of the menus served at McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s contain a large quantity of corn.

The idea was inspired by the victory gardens that Allied civilians were asked to plant during World War II. My intention was a bit more humble than the defeat of fascism. I pretty much just wanted to stop getting looted by upscale supermarkets.

Why pay four bucks for a pound of sun-ripened organic tomatoes when I could pop a few seeds in the ground and grow my own for, like, pennies?

At the moment, our tiny garden is a novelty, a kind of indulgence. It barely takes any of our time or energy. But that’s going to change, as surely as the prices at our gas stations. My wife and I already are discussing tearing out more of our lawn and setting up a composting operation. It’s also clear to me that I’m going to have to figure out a way to keep my tomato plants growing vertically. Like it or not, we’re going to have to make our land more economically productive. Better to start that process now than to wait until it’s a matter of survival.

Tell USDA to Protect Consumers, Not Industrial Fish Farmers

You want food labels you can trust. “USDA Organic” should be one of them. Industrial fish farmers seek to cash in on the organic label – only you can stop them.

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB ) -- at the request of the industrial fish farming industry -- is considering allowing farmed fish to get the organic label even though the practices are anything but organic. This astonishing greenwashing covers up unsustainable practices like feeding wild fish to fish in open net pens in the ocean.

Neither of these practices is consistent with organic principles that you have come to trust and that require minimal impact on the environment, control of inputs and outputs, and animals to be raised on organically-raised feed.

Turning Trash Into Electricity

Here’s a solution to the energy crisis Americans are sure to love: A company called Geoplasma is building a plant in Florida that will vaporize garbage with a plasma torch, turning 1,500 tons of waste into 60 megawatts of the good stuff. It may not be as clean as solar, but hey, America is the Saudi Arabia of trash.

one city’s rotting rubbish will soon release far less methane—and provide power for 50,000 homes—because of an innovation in plasma technology

Engineers have developed an efficient torch for blasting garbage with a stream of superheated gas, known as plasma. When trash is dropped into a chamber and heated to 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, its organic components—food, fluids, paper—vaporize into a hot, pressurized gas, which turns a turbine to generate electricity. Steam, a by-product, can generate more. Inorganic refuse such as metals condense at the bottom and can be used in roadbeds and heavy construction.

Government officials say there are no records on the number of people who have been wrongly arrested because of the tests.

The kits use powerful acids that react with the substance in a plastic pouch. If the liquid turns a certain color, it is a considered a positive result. But a number of legal products and plants test positive: chocolate for hashish; rosemary for marijuana; and natural soaps for the "date-rape drug" GHB.

Officers searched their bags, and ran drug tests on their food and toiletries. The chocolate again came up positive for drugs, as did a bottle of tea tree oil, a natural antiseptic and antifungal.

Designed by Mads Hagstrom, the exhibition features store shelves that carry merchandises that appear simple in design yet delicate. The merchandise/art works represent topics in modern society that everybody should be concerned about.

The 38 pieces of merchandise include such thought-provoking oddities as; stress killers, commercial free space, clean tap water, renewable energy, and organic food.

Putting a label on an empty bottle to indicate different concepts is in effect a form of installation art, Wang said. This is an exhibition that is uncommon in Taiwan. By purchasing items, the buyer expresses his or her identification with the concept 'purchased' --in a manner reflecting the mechanism of casting a vote in a referendum.

Britain to crack down on exports from Israeli settlements

Britain is taking the lead in pressing the EU to curb imports from Israeli producers in the occupied West Bank as a practical step towards halting the steady increase in the construction of Jewish settlements.

An internal EU note circulated by the UK expresses concern that goods produced from the settlements may be entering Britain after being illegally exempted from tariffs in violation of an Israel-EU trade agreement.

Several retailers, including Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose and Somerfield, say they import food – such as organic herbs – grown on settlements, but add that, by designating the goods as "West Bank", they are complying with EU requirements to denote the area of origin. Marks & Spencer recently disclosed it had stopped stocking goods made in the West Bank.

The research conducted by the UN Environment Programme suggests that organic, small-scale farming can deliver the increased yields which were thought to be the preserve of industrial farming, without the environmental and social damage which that form of agriculture brings with it.

An analysis of 114 projects in 24 African countries found that yields had more than doubled where organic, or near-organic practices had been used. That increase in yield jumped to 128 per cent in east Africa.

Last month the UK's former chief scientist Sir David King said anti-scientific attitudes among Western NGOs and the UN were responsible for holding back a much-needed green revolution in Africa. "The problem is that the Western world's move toward organic farming – a lifestyle choice for a community with surplus food – and against agricultural technology in general and GM in particular, has been adopted across the whole of Africa, with the exception of South Africa, with devastating consequences,"

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) -- The buffet offers a variety of pizzas, with whole wheat crust, organic toppings and hormone-free cheese. The salad bar includes some greens and vegetables grown without pesticides in a nearby garden.

And the chef even takes special requests from vegetarians, those wanting gluten-free food or even an extra slice of free-range meat.

This isn't a restaurant in one of Kansas City's trendy neighborhoods, but a cramped room in the basement of the Kansas City Academy, a private school for 6th-12th graders in the city's Waldo district.

The Academy is one of three Kansas City-area private schools that participate in Bistro Kids' Farm 2 School program, which is committed to improving students' health by offering lunches from organic, natural, locally-grown food.

Cuban authorities responded to the crisis by giving these ecological agronomists carte blanche to redesign the nation's food system. Officials broke up large state-owned farms, offered land to farming families, and encouraged the formation of small agricultural co-ops. Cuban farmers began employing oxen as a replacement for the tractors they could no longer afford to fuel. Cuban scientists began investigating biological methods of pest control and soil fertility enhancement. The government sponsored widespread education in organic food production, and the Cuban people adopted a mostly vegetarian diet out of necessity. Salaries for agricultural workers were raised, in many cases to above the levels of urban office workers. Urban gardens were encouraged in parking lots and on public lands, and thousands of rooftop gardens appeared. Small food animals such as chickens and rabbits began to be raised on rooftops as well.
