Bush Poised To Implement Dangerous New DHHS Rule

President Bush is poised to implement this disastrous new policy as soon as next week. Tell the Bush administration: Keep your word. Stop the attack on women’s health.

This new rule could allow almost 600,000 health care entities that receive federal funding to redefine abortion to include the most common forms of birth control — and then refuse to provide these basic services. For any health provider to intentionally withhold information about widely embraced treatment options from a patient — for any health condition — is absolutely unconscionable under any circumstances. The federal government has no business funding providers who do not abide by this most fundamental standard of care.

Australian Govt considers action against Japan whaling

The Federal Government says it is still considering international legal action against Japan over its scientific whaling program in the Southern Ocean.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett says he is pleased to see unconfirmed reports that the Japanese Government is planning to kill fewer whales this season than in previous years.

But Mr Garrett has told Parliament the Australian Government will continue to pursue an end to all commercial and scientific whaling.

"The Government's also giving serious and careful consideration to a range of options for possible international legal action against Japan's Antarctic program," he said.

"We have carefully analysed the information obtained through our monitoring of the Antarctic whaling fleet last summer."

He says a news report from Japan indicates the government is reducing the number of whales it intends to kill this season.

A reduction of 20 per cent in the upcoming season to 750 whales,

overall target will be reduced by approximately 10 per cent,

Darryl Draper, a national customer relationship and loyalty training manager for Subaru of America in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, delivers and tracks customer service training courses for more than 600 Subaru dealerships across the country using Moodle.

Cisco, the global manufacturer of networking solutions, uses Moodle for its Entrepreneur Institute, which partners with organizations and governments to use Web 2.0 tools to deliver entrepreneur education and business planning skills. Cisco uses the LMS to offer self-paced courses, assessments, and registration options to users around the world, from students in Latin America to nonprofit groups in the EU.

Scientists decipher each of the 3 billion DNA bases from the genome of an acute myeloid leukemia tumor

For the first time, a complete cancer genome, and incidentally a complete female genome, has been decoded, scientists report online Nov. 5 in Nature. In a study made possible by faster, cheaper and more sensitive methods for sequencing DNA, the researchers pinpoint eight new genes that may cause a cell to turn cancerous.

“Since cancer is a disease of the genome, this newfound ability to determine the complete DNA sequence of a cancer cell is enormously powerful,” comments Francis Collins, a geneticist and former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, Md., a group that raced to sequence the first entire human genome.

Mostly, it's a pretty good deal to be rich and famous in America -- unless you come down with a dreaded disease and someone leaks your medical information. What do you do? What can you do?

As Christina Applegate discovered recently, the options are limited.

She is just the latest celebrity to find her medical troubles in a tabloid. Patrick Swayze, Britney Spears, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Dennis Quaid, George Clooney, Farrah Fawcett -- all in recent years have seen information from their medical records, or those of loved ones, spread in the press and on the Internet -- without their permission and sometimes in violation of the law.

Sometimes leaks stem from happenstance.

"I've been at the doctor's office and had another person in the waiting room call and report that I was there -- I think it's appalling," says actress Jennifer Garner.

Chrysler's options dwindle, future in doubt

DETROIT (Reuters) - With no clear buyers in sight for Chrysler LLC, the struggling automaker's owner Cerberus Capital Management is running out of options to clinch a deal that will strike the troubled asset from its books.

Chrysler is burning through cash rapidly as it moves to slash vast production, It had $11.7 billion at the end of June. Its dealer network is larger than necessary to support sales of 4 million vehicles annually when a prolonged U.S. slump has cut real demand by up to 40 percent.

Cerberus' best bet would be to partner Chrysler with a foreign nameplate or sell the company by breaking it up before it runs out of cash, they said.

The biggest windfall in the invasion of Iraq has most certainly gone to the oil services and logistics company Halliburton . The company, which was formerly run by Vice President Dick Cheney, had revenue of over $8 billion in contracts in Iraq in 2003 alone. And while Halliburton ’s dealings in Iraq have been dogged everywhere by scandal – including now a criminal investigation into overcharging by Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown and Root for gas shipped into Iraq – Vice President Cheney manages to be doing quite well from the deal. He owns $433,000 unexercised Halliburton stock options worth more than $10 million dollars.

Brown and Root has been also been investigated for over billing the government in its domestic operations. In February 2002, Brown and Root paid out $2 million to settle a suit with the Justice Department that alleged the company defrauded the government during the mid-1990s closure of Fort Ord in Monterey, California.

"Whether you characterize it as fraud or sharp business practices, the bottom line is the same: the government was not getting what it paid for," says Michael Hirst, of the United States Attorney's Office in Sacramento, who litigated the suit on behalf of the government. "We alleged that they exploited the contracting process and increased their profits at the governments expense."

• Reengage people, technologies and research in foreign policy.

Kelleher, a former official with the US Defense Department and National Security Council, points out that while the bar is high, the resources available to the next administration will be low. In light of this, “You must reengage and reorganize the resources you have” – among them, “the new options IT and agile communication technologies give you at lower costs and the unquenchable interest of students and researchers in the foreign policy agenda,” she said.
