Every key of the Optimus Maximus keyboard is a stand-alone display showing the function it is currently associated with.

Optimus is equally good for any keyboard layouts—Cyrillic, Ancient Greek, Georgian, Arabic, Quenya, hiragana—and so on to infinity: notes, numerals, special symbols, HTML codes, math functions, images etc.

Every button on the keyboard (or, more precisely, a module with a moving cap, a microchip and a display) is easy to remove in order to clean or replace.

Configurator software allows for programming every button to reproduce a sequence of symbols and editing the image separately for each layout.

For as much feature slashing and resulting public outcry involved in getting this thing out the door for a "reasonable price," it sure didn't amount to much: Art Lebedev just announce its uber-hyped Optimus 103 keyboard will debut in May of 2007 for $1,200. That's twelve hundies, for those keeping track at home, ten times the current price of the Optimus mini three 1.5. Sure, nobody expected this thing to be cheap, but $1,200 might be asking a bit much. Luckily, prices will be dropping to a "mere" sub-grand in September of 2007, and at that rate we'll be able to afford one of these things right around the time that thought-based typing becomes the input method of choice. Well, at least our dreams of keyboard heaven were fun while they lasted. If you're just crazy enough to try it, you can pre-order the keyboard on December 12th.

Optimus OLED Keyboard Pre-Orders Start Dec. 12

"After almost a year and a half of public development, the Optimus OLED keyboard is nearing completion. According to the project blog, pre-orders for the Optimus-103 will start on December 12. The price is unspecified at this time, but Art Lebedev has said the keyboard will cost 'less than a good mobile phone' (probably about $400). Don't expect to see those 10 programmable function keys on the left on this first version, though, as they will not make their debut until the Optimus-113, released later."

Optimus' OLED Keyboard to Ship on Feb 1st

The Kremlin boys made headlines when they touted Optimus as the first keyboard with OLED labeling all keys. Now they have announced the mysterious keyboard availability: February 1st 2006. That's some 2 weeks later until we should have our hands on it. But wait, going through Optimus FAQ, the cost of the first dynamic keyboard, comparable to a good mobile phone, is going to be somewhat prohibitive to some.

Practically speaking, the keyboard's level of customization is quite amazing. You have to see it to believe it. There will be a free SDK when it's done. So, you can expect the altruism of gamers and tweakers to provide an endless supply of digital keyboard layouts for future and current games. All these innovations really put MS' Natural Keyboard 4000 to shame.

Looks like a normal keyboard doesn’t it? Well, this keyboard is anything but ordinary. In saying that, for a price tag of approximately $462 US then you should get something a little bit special.

Well, the Optimus Maximus keyboard is a revolution. Each key is actually a small OLED screen, designed to be changed on the fly. So, do you program? Type in a language beyond standard english? Want you ‘leet speak’ to go on there? All this and much more is possible.

In terms of connectivity, you’ve got 2 USB 2.0 ports, an SD card slot (for storing your settings and data), a K-lock, standard USB support and a DC input. The software is fully customisable and the service life of the keys should be pretty good as you only press the plastic cover of the keys. Software support is for Windows XP and MAC OS X.

So you thought the $1,536 Optimus Maximus keyboard was a tad expensive? Peep this: the €20,000 (about $28,000) XYNERGI programmable controller from Fairlight. To be fair, you get a hell of a lot more than just a keyboard for your 28-grand as the kit includes Fairlight's CC-1 digital media engine as well. While it's targeted at media professionals, it also integrates like a peach with Microsoft Office and all your other Windows applications. Better yet, the custom key mappings are said to "intelligently" adjust depending upon the "mode the operator is in." However, judging by the video (after the break), intelligence seems defined by your ability to find (and push) the function button.

It's hard work to keep the juices flowing for a product whose design struck our Pavlovian bell more than a year ago. Especially when all we're getting is a picture of a single, non-OLED prototype key released just last week. That (LCD?) key will hopefully, someday, replicate itself a la the grey goo and become the Optimus 103 keyboard, you know, the ~~wireless~~ slab which features ~~113~~ 103 contextual keys which can be mapped to different functions within applications or simply act as animated, informational widgets. We've just learned that the device will appear to your system as a USB mass storage device with all those custom mappings stored right in the keyboard. That should allow you to take the keyboard anywhere, to any PC, with your application specific layouts in tow without the need to install any pesky drivers. Promises, promises. *blots mouth*
