Mathematician Cracks Mystery Beatles Chord

It’s the most famous chord in rock 'n' roll, an instantly recognizable twang rolling through the open strings on George Harrison’s 12-string Rickenbacker.

It evokes a Pavlovian response from music fans

The opening chord to A Hard Day’s Night is also famous because for 40 years, no one quite knew exactly what chord Harrison was playing.

Dr. Brown decided to try and see if he could apply a mathematical calculation known as Fourier transform to solve the Beatles’ riddle. The process allowed him to decompose the sound into its original frequencies using computer software and parse out which notes were on the record.

By tapping the natural motion of slow-moving water, a new hydrokinetic generator could open vast new swaths of the ocean for energy production.

"About four years ago, it dawned on me that we should enhance the vibrations and try to harness the energy," said ocean engineer Michael Bernitsas, who has founded Vortex Hydro Energy to commercialize his idea. "No one has ever thought of patenting this idea, even though vortex induced vibrations were first observed in 1504 by Leonardo da Vinci."

You want food labels you can trust. “USDA Organic” should be one of them. Industrial fish farmers seek to cash in on the organic label – only you can stop them.

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB ) -- at the request of the industrial fish farming industry -- is considering allowing farmed fish to get the organic label even though the practices are anything but organic. This astonishing greenwashing covers up unsustainable practices like feeding wild fish to fish in open net pens in the ocean.

Neither of these practices is consistent with organic principles that you have come to trust and that require minimal impact on the environment, control of inputs and outputs, and animals to be raised on organically-raised feed.

The 26-year-old woman fell ill two months earlier, her mother told Clark. It started with a headache — the worst of her daughter’s life. Her mother took her to the emergency room near their hometown in rural Maine. The doctors there thought it was a migraine and gave her something for the pain. It didn’t help.

Over the next 10 days her daughter saw six different doctors, had many blood tests and scans and tried a dozen medicines. No one had a diagnosis or a cure. “There’s something wrong in my head,” the young woman kept repeating. “It’s just not right.”

“They told me she was having a psychotic break, that she probably had schizophrenia,” her mother reported, the horror of that night still audible in her voice. The patient was taken to a psychiatric hospital.

Automotive manufacturer Subaru is one large company that has embraced the open-source tool for training management. Darryl Draper, a national customer relationship and loyalty training manager for Subaru of America in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, delivers and tracks customer service training courses for more than 600 Subaru dealerships across the country using Moodle.

Cisco, the global manufacturer of networking solutions, uses Moodle for its Entrepreneur Institute, which partners with organizations and governments to use Web 2.0 tools to deliver entrepreneur education and business planning skills. Cisco uses the LMS to offer self-paced courses, assessments, and registration options to users around the world, from students in Latin America to nonprofit groups in the EU.

Companies like Google and Microsoft give away free software as a courtesy to their users to hook more people on their services ("free as in beer.") But open source organizations are often non-profit and made up of volunteer developers who release free software because they believe users have a right to control their data ("free as in speech.")

Open source roots are in the Unix operating system, but these days many "free as in speech" applications are available for Windows as well - and today I've got a list of my top 10 favorites.

1. Mozilla Firefox (Web browser)

Crikey, another Firefox plug! Yeah, we love the 'fox, and we'll keep talking about it until EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU USES IT. It really just doesn't get any better when it comes to a cross-platform, open source web browser.

2. Mozilla Thunderbird (Email client)

Firefox's much less celebrated little brother is one helluva email client. We especially like its customizable message filters, built-in adaptive Junk mail filter and ability to install useful add-ons (like Firefox).

3. Open Office (Office suite)

4. Gaim (Instant messenger)

Chat on any service you'd like - AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN, Jabber, ICQ - with this multi-platform, tabbed IM client.

5. ClamWin (Antivirus)

Norton bugging you again to break out the credit card and subscribe? Uninstall! ClamWin is free anti-virus software with automatic updates and scheduled scans, no credit card required.

6. VLC Media Player (Audio/video player)

Got a video or audio file Windows Media Player or Quicktime can't play? Betcha VLC can.

7. KeePass (Password manager)

Another app you really don't hear a lot about, but for anyone with more than 6 different passwords, KeePass is indispensable. Check out my previous feature, Securely track your passwords for more on using KeePass.

Recently, Microsoft developer Mike Wasserman released the Touchless SDK for Microsoft .Net which enables the creation of applications that can receive input via gestures tracked and recognized using input from a cheap web camera. Sarkozy Views Obama Stance On Iran As 'Utterly Immature'

But Sarkozy's pessimism does not stem only from Obama's stance; it also stems from the overall behavior of the international community toward Iran's nuclear program, and particularly its inability to agree on a fourth round of Security Council sanctions against the Islamic Republic. This foot-dragging will make it impossible to effect a change in Iran's nuclear policy, Sarkozy believes.

Sarkozy has made his criticisms only in closed forums in France. But according to a senior Israeli government source, the reports reaching Israel indicate that Sarkozy views the Democratic candidate's stance on Iran as "utterly immature" and comprised of "formulations empty of all content."

Obama visited Paris in July, and the Iranian issue was at the heart of his meeting with Sarkozy.

Sarkozy told Obama at that meeting that if the new American president elected in November changed his country's policy toward Iran, that would be "very problematic."

Following their July meeting, Sarkozy repeatedly expressed disappointment with Obama's positions on Iran, concluding that they were "not crystallized, and therefore many issues remain open," the Israeli source said. Advisors to the French president who held separate meetings with Obama's advisors came away with similar impressions and expressed similar disappointment.

Red Hat CEO: Money crisis will boost open source

Sydney, Australia--The global economic crisis will provide a boost for open-source software, Red Hat chief executive Jim Whitehurst claimed during a visit to Sydney.

Whitehurst, who was in Australia as part of a tour of the Asia-Pacific region, said in an interview with ZDNet.com.au on Wednesday that the crisis would cause companies to consolidate their technology infrastructure and reduce spending.

"So the bad news is when things get tight, people stop investing as much in the future," he said. "I would expect to see a slowdown in spending for new functionality." However, the chief executive said this would cause more companies to consider open-source software as an option.

"What I do know is that open source will be in much better shape coming out of [the financial crisis], that going into it relative to our propriety competitors," he said.

Security Through the Eyes of a Cryptographer

This paper discusses Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS), a new standard for web services, drafted by EMC, IBM, and Microsoft. CMIS fundamentally changes how content is managed and consumed by ensuring interoperability for people and applications using multiple content repositories.

Schneier has two open source encryption algorithms under his belt, publishes monthly security newsletters and blogs about security when he is away from his day job at http://www.schneier.com/blog/. He regularly touches on security on the computer and also in the United States.

Among the two standards Schneier developed are Blowfish, and the more secure TwoFish encryption algorithm, which remains unpatented and in the public domain, which is free for anyone to use and implement. Schneier designed the algorithms as a replacement for the aging and classified Data Encryption Standard algorithm. Many of his works on encryption have also been published.
