Here's yet another form of animal abuse in China - does this country's government have a department dedicated to inventing new and innovative ways of abusing animals?! Skinning cats alive in fur farms, feeding live cattle to lions in one zoo and now making a lion in another zoo (which seems to have had its teeth removed) ride a terrified horse. It defies belief.
What's more unbelievable is how the International Olympic Committee can award the Olympics to a country with such an appauling human and animal rights record.

The huge male lion clings on to the terrified horse – but this big cat is not about to devour his prey. Keepers in China are training lions and tigers to ride on horseback for tourists.

In one the nation's most notorious zoos, spectators are treated to a bizarre display as the lion leaps on to the horse's back.

Then it rides around the ring while a trainer with a whip keeps it moving. A tiger then jumps up on to the same horse.

The pictures are from a zoo in Xiamen in Fujian, South-East China. They come after bears were shown riding bikes during an 'Animal Games' in another zoo.

At the Xiogsen Bear and Tiger Mountain Village in Guilin, live animals are fed to tigers as a show for tourists.

Bears have also been made to pull cars in races against humans in Jinan.

Shops on fire amid Tibet protests

Fires have broken out in the Tibetan city of Lhasa amid reports of rioting, as rare street protests led by Buddhist monks appeared to gather pace.

One eyewitness told the BBC how large groups of people were setting fire to cars and shops and destroying anything of Chinese influence.

Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, released a statement expressing deep concern, saying the protests were a "manifestation of the deep-rooted resentment of the Tibetan people".

The Dalai Lama, who heads Tibet's government-in-exile in India, called on the Chinese leadership to stop using force and begin dialogue with the Tibetan people.

He said about 300 monks had tried to leave the Sera monastery to protest but security forces brandishing clubs stopped them and at least one monk was beaten to the ground.

Tibet enjoyed long periods of autonomy before the twentieth century,

many Tibetans remain loyal to the Dalai Lama, who fled in 1959 and currently lives in exile in India.

The White House has launched an urgent review of Afghanistan policy, fast-tracked for completion in the next several weeks, amid growing concern that the administration lacks a comprehensive strategy for the foundering war there and as intelligence officials warn of a rapidly worsening situation on the ground.

Palin, Special Olympics and Truth

Last year, the state of Alaska gave the Special Olympics $250,000. This year, the Alaska legislature requested $550,000 for Special Olympics, which would have constituted a 120 percent increase. It is typical, of course, for advocates to submit impossibly high budget requests, even during budget crunches, in the hopes of getting whatever they can. This is understood by anyone who has ever run an organization or prepared a budget that requires legislative or executive approval.

Gov. Palin denied the request, but not completely: She reduced it to a 10-percent raise, approving a gift of $275,000. A 10 percent raise during tough times is very good, as any employee in America would quickly attest. For most employees, a raise of 3 to 4 percent is a good raise.

In other words, not only did Palin not cut funding, she actually raised it — just not as much as some would have liked.

Jewish Taliban: Ultra-Orthodox Vigilantes in Jerusalem

Modesty squads are roaming the streets, attacking and brutally beating people who fail to live up to a narrow religious code defining moral purity. People are afraid, and women are being victimized most of all. Is the Taliban resurgent? Well, yes, but that's not what this story is about; instead, this story is about Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem taking the "law" into their own hands and punishing people for failing to adhere to strict religious standards.

Traditionalist Muslims tend to take first place in the Oppression Olympics, getting high marks for their efforts to stifle free speech and prevent women from achieving real equality in society with conservative Christians working hard to challenge them. Jews, though, tend to be quieter — but maybe some have decided that they can give the other a real run for their money? Even conservative, evangelical Christians haven't thought to create their own Taliban-inspired morality police.

Speaking at the inaugural Ted Wheelwright Memorial Lecture for the Sydney University Department of Political Economy on September 1, Filipino anti-globalisation activist and academic Walden Bello, founding director of Focus on the Global South, contrasted the recent Beijing Olympics with the US Democrats national convention.

He said that “despite the glitter of both”, the one reflected that China had “had a few bad centuries but was back on its feet” while the other reflected that the US was in a “10-year downward spin that would only get worse under continued Republican rule”.

From September 6th to September 17th, Beijing is once again hosting athletes from around the world. Over 4,200 athletes - from six different disability groups - from 148 countries are taking part in the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games. Not only are the sports divided into events, but the events are divided into different disability categories, to even out the playing field as much as possible. The slogan for this years Paralympic Games is the same as the one for the Olympics held just last month: "One World, One Dream". (36 photos total)
