BAGHDAD: An ExxonMobil-led consortium has beaten rival Russian, French and Chinese groups to bag initial rights to develop Iraq’s West Qurna field, the Oil Ministry said, adding momentum to Iraq’s bid to unlock its oil riches. With reserves of 8.7 billion barrels, West Qurna is among the prized Iraqi fields eyed by Western oil majors as they face flat or lower output at home and stiff competition from Chinese and Indian oil companies in bidding for oilfields elsewhere.

“The consortium led by ExxonMobil, which includes Shell, won the contract to develop West Qurna Phase One oilfield,” Oil Ministry spokesman Asim Jihad said.

The initial deal was signed in Baghdad on Thursday but needs Cabinet approval before it can be finalized.

The 20-year contract is part of a raft of deals Iraq is close to formalizing in a bid to catapult itself to the world’s third largest oil producer after decades of war and economic decline.

UGANDA: Palm Project Accused of Environmental Destruction

The Ugandan government entered into an agreement with BIDCO, the largest manufacturer of vegetable oil in Uganda, and Malaysian palm oil giants Wilmar to set up a plantation and refinery in the Kalangala islands in Lake Victoria. Transnational agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland owns shares in both companies.

KADINGO says apart from massive application of fertilisers which washes into the lake causing over-production of algae and water weeds with knock-on effects on lake ecosystems, BIDCO has also encroached on national forestry land outside the 7,000 hectares it received from Uganda government.

DIY soap – cleaning up your act

clipper's remarks: Half way recipes (in which you take a pure form of soap and spruce it up) can be easy to do at home. You can use Castille soap to make several varieties of body wash. Here is one recipe:
Vanilla Almond Soap

1/3 cup whole almonds
1 4-ounce bar Castille soap
1/4 cup distilled water
1 tablespoon almond oil
1/8 teaspoon vanilla essential oil

Grind the almonds in a food processor or coffee grinder. Using a cheese grater or a knife, shred the bar of Castille soap. Boil the water and add the shredded soap, stirring until you get a nice gooey texture. Reduce to a simmer and then add in the almond grinds, oil and vanilla. You can spoon the soap into molds (ice cubes can make little gift soaps) and let it sit for around five hours until it hardens.

“fragrance” means a conglomeration of chemicals

avoid anything that has palm oil, as it is extremely unsustainably harvested

A great resource when purchasing health & beauty products is the good guide.

You can also look for local soap producers, and see if you can support their business and get clean, chemical free soap

Make sure to recycle old soap as well. If you have little nubs of bar soap you can use them for tailor’s chalk (dry soap makes little white marks on fabric), bubble baths, or save them and form a new bar with the leftovers.

Banana Oatmeal Muffins
Yield: 12 large

Bake: in 400ºF oven for 20 minutes

11/4 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup yogurt, plain low fat
1/2 cup milk, low fat
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup oil, sunflower or vegetable oil
2 bananas, large, ripe, mashed
1 egg, large, lightly beaten
1 1/2 cup oat flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

Instructions
In a bowl mix together rolled oats, yogurt and milk. Let soak for 10 minutes.
Mix oat flour, salt, spices, baking powder and baking soda in a bowl.
Add brown sugar, mashed banana, egg and oil to rolled oats mixture. Mix well.

Add dry ingredients to the rolled oats mixture. Mix well. Fill greased or paper lined muffin cups 2/3 full. Bake for approximately 20 minutes.

Ecuador is betting it can keep what is left of the oil in the ground and hang onto its biosphere into the bargain.

The South American country has learned the hard way that oil brings human misery and environmental devastation along with billions in export earnings. Every new oil field is an invasion that brings tens of thousands of outsiders into the forest's heart, polluting the air, soil and water, destroying wildlife, and assaulting the support systems of indigenous tribes, which can lead to their extermination. And the damage is not confined to the immediate vicinity of the wells.

Luz Coloma, Yasuni-ITT's press officer, added, "Ecuador has had sad experiences with the exploitation of oil and no one wants any more environmental disasters like the Chevron-Texaco case."

One of the common problems most of us need to face and overcome is that related to dry skin due to lack of moisture.

What causes dry skin?

The dry air conditions, both in and out of the house, especially in winter season, might be one of the reasons for the skin to get dry. The external weather condition is not the only reason for skin dryness. If you shower more than is normally warranted and/or use skin-drying soap, then there is every possibility that your skin gets drier.

In normal conditions, our skin does not become dry because the required oil for maintaining the skin is produced by the outer layer of the skin through the oil glands in the form of sebum. If the demand for oil to maintain the skin exceeds the internal oil production, then the paucity of the oil leads to the problem of dry skin.

The world's biggest oil companies are reporting sharp declines in quarterly profit as the recession continues to weigh on consumer demand, driving down energy prices.

Exxon's refining business took an especially large hit from July to September, with profits dropping 89 percent, as gasoline and diesel prices fell. Shell, whose refining earnings declined 47 percent, said the plunge in demand will keep profit margins narrow in "the short and medium term" and a quick recovery in energy usage and prices is unlikely.

Those rising prices -- which usually fatten profits at companies such as Exxon -- have come with a cost, however. The refining side of the business is getting hit hard because it must pay more for crude to make fuel, but consumer demand for fuel has not rebounded as strongly.
