The Toledo Blade reports that an Obama rally today at the Columbus statehouse drew 60,000 people, who crowded onto the lawn and spilled into the streets. Obama called McCain’s Saturday Night Live appearance “funny,” but in the next breath used Cheney’s endorsement of McCain to link the Republican contender to the Bush administration. “Dick Cheney came out, and he hit the campaign trail. He said, and I quote, that he is ‘delighted’ to support John McCain. You’ve never seen Dick Cheney delighted before, but he is. That’s kind of hard to picture,” Obama said. “I would like to congratulate Senator McCain on this endorsement, because he really earned it.” In response to the crowd’s reaction to his mention of Cheney, Obama said, “You don’t need to boo, you just need to vote.”

No natural disaster present, no problem. Just throw money at faith-based groups and say God told you to do it. It seems former Governor of Oho, Bob Taft, found guilty of illegally accepting gifts from golf pals, also found a way to help out his buddies at taxpayer expense:

You've heard the stories: The $500 office chair for a university that could have been bought elsewhere for $50; the Statehouse renovation that included closets outfitted with $400 door knobs emblazoned with the Great Seal of the State of Ohio; and, of course, state investments in rare coins and Beanie Babies.

You gotta give kudos on creativity, no? If the war angle is already providing billions in ill-begotten gains, they use Mother Nature and God to rip off the American people and become 21st Century Robber Barons.

First example? Check out this great piece by Timothy J. Burger of Bloomberg on greasy, sebum-stained, uber-lobbyist, Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi, who never met a corrupt family member under criminal investigation to whom he couldn't bestow a no-bid contract post-Katrina (hell, he even hooked himself up!):

Among the beneficiaries are Barbour's own family and friends, who have earned hundreds of thousands of dollars from hurricane-related business. A nephew, one of two who are lobbyists, saw his fees more than double in the year after his uncle appointed him to a special reconstruction panel. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents in June raided a company owned by the wife of a third nephew, which maintained federal emergency-management trailers.

Obama's Columbus stop draws 60,000 to Statehouse lawn

COLUMBUS — A throng some 60,000 people strong filled the lawn in front of the Statehouse and flowed into the streets Sunday as Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama made his closing arguments to Ohio for a vote to end what he called the "nightmare" of the last eight years.

And despite the beat of the message of his closing theme, "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," and polls showing him in the lead, the Illinois senator was leaving nothing to chance. He pointed the way toward Veterans Memorial just across the Scioto River where Franklin County residents were voting as he spoke.

Ohio Statehouse to Host Civil War Encampment

Two uniformed Union soldiers stand near a fire, one pouring coffee into the other's tin cup. Pots, pans and tongs are scattered around the fire pit.

Behind them, a gold-and-red sign advertises a health club.

Such is the challenge of re-creating history at the Statehouse, in the heart of a bustling Downtown, for a Civil War encampment.

"It's definitely different," said Dennis Trimble, quartermaster sergeant of the 1st Ohio Statehouse Light Artillery, Battery A, and assistant director of Statehouse operations.

"It's nice to be out in the middle of a field, where you can get a feel for what it's really like."

Still, the Statehouse plaza that faces High Street has something that few fields in Ohio have: Civil War authenticity.

"We're actually on a site where our Civil War ancestors have been," Trimble said of a spot where Union soldiers awaited orders.

"You can really feel like you are a part of history."
