Neutron stars form when massive stars exhaust their fuel

Astronomers have spotted a space oddity in Earth's neighbourhood - a dead star with some unusual characteristics.

The object, known as a neutron star, was studied using space telescopes and ground-based observatories.

But this one, located in the constellation Ursa Minor, seems to lack some key characteristics found in other neutron stars.

Details of the study, by a team of American and Canadian researchers, will appear in the Astrophysical Journal.

If confirmed, it would be only the eighth known "isolated neutron star" - meaning a neutron star that does not have an associated supernova remnant, binary companion, or radio pulsations.

Subliminal Advertisements have been around for years and use little tricks such as embedding images and words into pictures to grab your attention and subconsciously imprint their product into your mind.

TINY dachshund Jimmy Choo is a dad after mating with a huge ROTTWEILER.

Jimmy really scaled the heights of passion to get giant mutt Helga pregnant.

Owners Alan and Louise Crowshaw had assumed a male rottweiler called Romeo was responsible — but were stunned when Helga’s six pups looked just like 11-month-old Jimmy.

Alan, 29, of Fleetwood, Lancs, said: “We let Jimmy sleep with Helga as we thought it was impossible for them.

"Obviously he had other ideas.”

The authors estimate that the object is 250 to 1,000 light-years away. This would make Calvera one of the closest neutron stars to Earth - and possibly the closest.

Exactly what type of neutron star Calvera is remains a mystery

"Either Calvera is an unusual example of a known type of neutron star, or it is some new type of neutron star, the first of its kind," said Dr Rutledge.

Calvera's location high above the plane of our Milky Way galaxy is also a mystery

Man Lives Normal Life with Tiny (Egg-sized) Brain

French doctors are puzzling over the case of 44-year-old civil servant who has led a quite normal life — but with an extraordinarily tiny brain. In a case history published in next Saturday's Lancet, doctors led by Lionel Feuillet (Hopital of Marseille) say he was admitted to hospital after suffering mild weakness in his left leg.

Scans by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed that the man's cerebral cavities, called ventricles, had massively expanded. "The brain itself, meaning the grey matter and white matter, was completely crushed against the sides of the skull".

The images were most unusual.. the brain was virtually absent," he said. They were astonished to see "massive enlargement" of the lateral ventricles - usually tiny chambers that hold the cerebrospinal fluid that cushions the brain (left pictures; normal brain on the right).

One Punk Under God or The 'Prize' of Tammy Faye

Her son, Jay Bakker, recently attended the premiere of "One Punk Under God" a documentary that will air on the Sundance Channel in November. Bakker is also pastoring Revolution an "alternative" church which embraces the gay community and holds services in a bar in Williamsburg Brooklyn. The same production team that filmed the award winning movie, "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" are producing this television documentary.

A Page Six article In today's New York Post (10/22/06) covered this under the headline, "PRAY FOR TAMMY." Tammy was a part of the reality show "The Surreal Life" where she maintained her Christian witness while also gaining the respect of housemates like porn star Ron Jeremy.

Tammy makes it clear that she cherishes her children, hence the play on words in the title of this clip.

Oddity in Picking Jurors Opens Door to Racial Bias

According to a 2003 report of the Louisiana Crisis Assistance Center, which studied 390 felony jury trials in the parish from 1994 to 2002, the district attorney’s office used peremptory strikes to remove eligible black jurors three times as often as white ones.

In the two decades since Batson, there have been 20 murder trials in Jefferson Parish that ended in death sentences. Information about the race of the jurors is available in 18 of them.

Because the parish is 23 percent black, according to the 2000 census, you might expect to see about 3 black jurors on each 12-member panel. But of the 18 juries, 10 had no black members. Seven had one. One had two. None had three.

Allen Snyder, a black man, is on death row in Louisiana. An all-white jury in Jefferson Parish, in the New Orleans suburbs, sentenced him to death in 1996 for the fatal stabbing of a man his wife was seeing.

It took some work to get an all-white jury in a parish that is almost one-quarter black, but the prosecutors were up to the task. They used peremptory strikes — ones not requiring a reason — to remove all five eligible potential jurors who were black. (Four more blacks were removed for cause, all at the request of the prosecution.)

“The prosecutor’s intention to utilize racial bias became crystal clear when he commented during closing argument in the penalty phase that O. J. Simpson ‘got away with it’ in the California verdict that had been rendered shortly before this trial,” the justice, Harry T. Lemmon, wrote.
