People think being an assistant golf pro is a terrific job. Assistant pros agree, which is why they do it. They get to be around a golf course, get to talk about golf and even get to play a fair amount for free.

It's all terrific, as long as you don't mind the other parts: Low pay, long and crazy hours, being out of work for about five months every year (or leaving home for a temporary job) and knowing that career advancement could take a dozen years, if it does come at all.

"It's a great way of life, spending time doing what you love," said Jamie Kilmer, an assistant at the Meadow Brook Club, who has one of the better jobs because it entails mostly teaching members and working on his own game.

A competition to find the strangest book title of the past 30 years has declared Greek Rural Postmen And Their Cancellation Numbers the oddest.

The competition, run by Britain's Bookseller magazine, has been held annually since 1978.

This year's anniversary edition received thousands of entries from around the world.

In second place was People Who Don't Know They're Dead, while How To Avoid Huge Ships came third.

Sarah Palin's odd religious sect should NOT be a test of public office as she runs for Vice President, but given that John McCain and Sarah Palin have already made Palin's religion a campaign issue, it's a valid topic for public consideration (not as an electoral factor). The Wasilla Assemblies of God is holding, in one week, what it calls a Masters Commission in which prophecies for God and Alaska and the United States will be discussed. It seems that the church's leaders claim that God is "invading" Alaska and say that Wasilla is the key to God's plans for the entire world. It's hard to conclude that they are not talking about Sarah Palin's vice presidential campaign.

Primitive grubby candles and tray

Started with a long skinny thrift store metal tray ;

I really liked that ‘faux rusty look’ once upon a time. But I got over it! Time to update it! A quick coat of flat black spray paint and a light sanding will do the trick:

It’s not a HUGE difference, yet it looks sooooooooooooooo much better! Then I just added nine (because you KNOW it has to be a ODD number!) grubby candles.

Designer Anthony Mallier from India has created ‘Sparkle’ contact lenses to make your eyes “Sparkle like they’ve never sparkled before.” The ‘Sparkle’ contact lenses are fused with tiny Swarovski crystals in a circle around the edges of the lenses.

The ‘Sparkle’ contact lenses are the second place winner in the ‘Crystal Vision’ competition co-organized by designboom and Swarovski. Mallier took the ‘Crystal Vision’ theme literally when he designed the crystal eye ‘bling’. The competition had 4074 entries from 92 countries.

Mallier relates, “Swarovski has been synonymous with adding that extra ‘sparkle’ to everyday life. Swarovski crystals have the power to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary through their sheer brilliance. `Sparkle’ is one such attempt to enhance the expression of one of our most expressive features: our eyes.”

People once conquered by Rome at greater risk of HIV

Researchers found that people who live in lands conquered by the Roman army have less protection against HIV than those in countries they never reached

They say a gene which helps make people less susceptible to HIV occurs in greater frequency in areas of Europe that the Roman Empire did not stretch to.

The gene lacks certain DNA elements, which means HIV cannot bind to it as easily and is less able to infect cells.

People with the mutation have some resistance to HIV infection and also take longer to develop AIDS, reports New Scientist.

A study of almost 19,000 DNA samples from across Europe showed the gene variant seemed to dwindle in regions conquered by the Romans.

It is not clear why this is so since the spread of HIV - which began in the early 1980s - is too recent to have influenced the distribution of the variant.

TRENTON, N.J. - Cries for help inside a Trenton, N.J., home turned out to be for the birds. Neighbors called police Wednesday morning after hearing a woman's persistent cry of "Help me! Help me!" coming from a house. Officers arrived and when no one answered the door, they kicked it in to make a rescue.

But instead of a damsel in distress, officers found a caged cockatoo with a convincing call.

It wasn't the first time the 10-year-old bird named Luna said something that brought authorities to the home of owner Evelyn DeLeon.

About seven years ago, the bird cried like a baby for hours, leading to reports of a possible abandoned baby and a visit to the home by state child welfare workers. But it was only Luna practicing a newfound sound, DeLeon says.

DeLeon says her bird learns much of her ever-growing vocabulary from watching television, in both English and Spanish.

Palin is another story. She is an exceedingly odd choice for a party which has spent the better part of the past year loudly exclaiming that it was reaching out to Jewish voters

First, Palin has absolutely no foreign policy experience

Palin has never visited Israel and besides signing a pro-Israel resolution passed by the state legislature, she has apparently never spoken out or focused on the Jewish state.

ON DOMESTIC issues she is totally out of step with public opinion in the Jewish community.

The Jewish vote in 2008 has been a hot topic of conversation in the media. John McCain's fist major decision of this campaign - picking Palin for his running mate - leads us to believe that the Jewish community's concerns are not so high on his priority list.

Cops search for helpless human, find chatty cockatoo

Police officers kicked in the front door of a Trenton home Wednesday morning because they thought they heard a woman yelling "Help me! Help me!" But instead of finding a helpless human, The Times says officers found a chatty cockatoo.

Evelyn DeLeon, the bird's owner, says this isn't the first time Luna has called for help.

"Her 10-year-old blue-eyed umbrella cockatoo has twice now summoned police to the family's home and provided the family with some interesting moments over the years with her ever-expanding vocabulary," the paper says.

The Trentonian has more on the incident.

Halley's comet, which lights up Earth's sky every 75 years with its glowing tail, is a bit of a scientific mystery.

So far theories have been at a loss to explain how it acquired its extremely unusual backwards orbit, but the recent discovery of another odd comet orbiting farther out in the solar system may shed light on Halley's origins.

The newly-discovered comet 2008 KV42 circles the sun at a tilt of 104 degrees compared to the main plane in which most of the planets and asteroids travel. The newfound oddball also orbits in reverse compared to almost everything else. Scientists think it might represent an intermediate point between comets like Halley's and their progenitors in the far and totally uncharted reaches of the solar system.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Police in Port St. Lucie are on the lookout for a cross-dressing man who snatched a 74-year-old woman's purse. As if that weren't odd enough, they're depending on a strange clue. The suspect left behind a condom filled with water he had been using as a fake breast.

The woman said she believed the thief followed her while shopping. A witness told investigators he was wearing a short denim skirt and black tube top, and fled in a silver car with two other male crossdressers.

Police are processing the condom for fingerprint and DNA evidence.
