clipper's remarks: I just read this description of clipmarks by pokkets and literally got the chills. I believe one of the odd things about clipmarks is that it is very misunderstood by the general web population. Unfortunately, I think that is mostly a product of me being unable to properly explain it. So, when i see a description that so totally nails it, i get such a rush of excitement.

Clipmarks is like a news 'paper', that is written by the readers. Better than being told what the news is. It is like an organic search engine, powered by imagination, curiosity, and the need for awareness, rather than an algorithm. It is amazing how interesting someone can become, when we find they agree with us. Other clips can make clear some of the things, (facts particularly). that we have believed in error. With clear references.
Then there are hundreds of clips that can give your mind a break or a laugh. If you are going to see the world the more angles the better.

The new archaeological theory as to why huge monoliths were dragged from Wales to Salisbury Plain is utterly convincing

The Stonehenge mystery is solved. I always knew there was something odd about the "Amesbury archer". He died circa 2300BC and was rediscovered near the henge in Wiltshire in 2002, one of the most sensational prehistoric corpses ever found. His hair was laced with gold, the earliest found in England. His grave contained traces of fine clothes and implements of archery and copper-working. Analysis of his bones and teeth revealed that he came from central Europe, probably Switzerland, with possessions from Spain and France. Was this evidence of invasion? Was the Amesbury archer a Beaker lord of Stonehenge and were foreigners perhaps responsible for moving its giant bluestones from Wales?

One thing about the archer was strange. He was missing a kneecap, requiring him to walk with one leg rigid. Bone deterioration suggested that the deformity took place years before his death. He was an improbable warrior, more likely a rich trader. Besides, near him lay a younger male revealed (such being the wonders of science) as a close relative brought up in south-east England. So what was this wealthy but disabled man doing in the shadow of Stonehenge, far from his and his putative son's birthplace?

Cut to the hallowed meeting room of the Society of Antiquaries in London last October. It was packed with excited Stonehenge pundits (the serious ones), gathered to hear news from the front. The origin of Stonehenge is British archaeology's oldest unsolved mystery, its Fermat's last theorem. How the four-ton bluestones were brought to Salisbury Plain from the Preseli hills of south Wales has been answered by engineers, but nobody has found out why.

Women Had Pencil in Head for 55 Years

A 59-year-old German woman has had most of a pencil removed from inside her head after suffering nearly her whole life with the headaches and nosebleeds it caused, Bild newspaper reported.

Margret Wegner fell over carrying the pencil in her hand when she was age 4, according to a report on News.com.au.

"The pencil went right through my skin – and disappeared into my head," Wegner told the newspaper.

It narrowly missed vital parts of her brain.

At the time no one dared operate, but now technology has improved sufficiently for doctors to be able to remove it.

73-year-old takes high school exams for 39th time

JAIPUR, India (AP) - This year, like the past 39 years, Shivcharan Jatav tried to pass his 10th grade high school exams - and failed again.

The 73-year-old from western India was undeterred, vowing Friday to try again next year, in the hope that an education would improve his job and marriage prospects.

Jatav, a farmer from the desert state of Rajasthan, who had no formal education as a child, said he had been trying to pass the exams since 1969, when an army recruiter told him it would improve his chances of being accepted into the military.

"Since then I have been trying to pass this examination, but without any success," Jatav said, days after receiving the bitter news that he had failed again.

Jatav passed only one subject, the ancient language of Sanskrit, and scored just 103 out of a total of 600 in the examinations, he said.

Even though he is too old to join the army he has kept at it, hoping to become a more eligible bachelor.

STRATFORD, N.J. - November 27, 2006 - It may seem odd, but Silly String is helping to save the lives of soldiers in Iraq and one local community is making a big effort to ship it overseas.

Among the dangers faced by the military fighting in Iraq are booby traps.

Nearly invisible wires trip the explosions, but soldiers and marines have found Silly String is one way to spot the sinister mechanism without setting off the trigger.

Sixth grade teacher Jane Maugeri demonstated Silly String's use in revealing otherwise stealth threads for students at St. Luke's School in Stratford on Monday.

It's all part of a drive by the student council and the parish community to collect cans of silly string to send to Iraq.

The request came from Marcelle and Ronald Shriver, whose 27-year-old son, Army Specialist Todd Shriver, is stationed in Ramadi.

The Shrivers published their son's request in parish bulletins at St. Luke's and Our Lady of Grace in Somerdale. It's gotten a very strong response.

Bill Reynolds of Berlin dropped off 30 cans on Monday morning after a trip to a dollar store.

Silly String is considered a hazardous material, so shipping it requires following certain guidelines. The Shrivers are working on it

The churches are accepting donations of Silly String and money for shipping. St. Luke's Church is located at 55 Warwick Road in Stratford. Our Lady of Grace is located at 35 White Horse Pike in Somerdale.

Soft porn films are being shown on giant video screens at a bus station in Bulgaria.

The plasma TVs at the terminus in the capital Sofia show bus times during the day but switch to porn at night.

A station spokesman said: 'We wanted to give the passengers something to take their minds off the cold and to pass the time while waiting for a bus.'

However, some people are outraged by the move and claim station security guards now spend their time watching the screens rather than patrolling for troublemakers.

Malaysia's 'Magnetic Man' Demonstrates Powers

PERAK, Malaysia -- A Malaysian man claims he is a human magnet, and that any part of his body is able to attract and hold metals.

The man, known to his friends as "Magnetic Man," demonstrated his ability on Wednesday by showing how silverware can attach to different parts of his body.

The man is also apparently able to tow an 11-ton bus by using a chain and a piece of steel placed under his armpit.

The 77-year-old claims he can lift bricks and pull a Mercedes the same way.

He said he became aware of his strange talent when he was about 60 years old, when he noticed that househould appliances made of steel started sticking to him.

A group of university professors in Malaysia has been studying him to see if he actually has magnetic force, or if his skin simply has an ability to attach to different objects.

Jim Oberg sent me an odd note: a news article from Brazil has pictures and a description of a weird thing that fell to the ground a few hundred kilometers south and west of Brasilia (translated in the email Jim sent me):

An unidentified object fell on a farm on Goias, Brazil. The farmers are afraid that the object may be something radioactive or part of something dangerous. So far, it seems that the local police discards the possibilities of it being a weather balloon. The object has approximately 1 meter in diameter; it is made of steel and covered in some kind of plastic. It has an axle inside and seems to be of copper.

Anyone have any clue what this thing might be? I’m not sure if it came from an airplane or from orbit; there don’t appear to be any burn marks, but sometimes space debris doesn’t have them. Still, beats me. I know a few aeronautical engineers and rocket scientists read this blog, so if you have any thoughts, pipe up! Weird.

clipper's remarks: Does politics really make strange bedfellows? Is it so odd that Murdoch should support another corrupt, brutal and authoritarian goverment?

We should read this and ask ourselves: what is it that Rupert Murdoch and his ilk really believe in? Are they really conservatives or simply autocrats mascarading behind a "small government" agenda?

What is meant by "small" anyway? From one angle, the smallest government possible is a single dictator, while the largest government possible is a democracy where everyone holds equal share in the governance of their society.
