DevLearn 08 Keynote: Tim O’Reilly

Tim O’Reilly, Web 2.0 guru, talked to us about what web 2.0 is and led us to his implications for what we do. He started off talking about tracking the ‘alpha geek’. These are the folks who manage to thrive and innovate despite us, rather than because of us. He’s essentially built O’Reilly on watching what these folks do, analyzing the underlying patterns, and figuring out what’s key.

key competencies going forward being machine learning, statistics, and design. It isn’t about well-structured data, but about finding the nuggets in messy data. And it is about design as an “architecture of participation” that gets users to act in the ways you’d like.

Did the vets who died fighting for freedom and democracy say that if, in the future, a President started some wars, attacked America’s freedoms, and let his buddies help themselves to tons of taxpayers’ money, that it was worth their sacrifice if he just walked away without once saying “sorry!”?

Today, Rush and Bill O’Reilly, etc. can glibly explain how such conduct would indeed be the very things that were worth the boys’ lives.

Bush has become the patron saint of fuck-ups and thereby a great inspiration to weasels who emulate war profiteers who can ignore completely the word “conscience.”
The terrorist leaders are ridiculed for telling their disciples that their deaths are commendable because they help spread the basic philosophy, but when America’s President turns war into a cash grab, the Rush Sean and Bill crowd stress that it is still possible to become wealthy in America.

Fox News Cut Out From Questions At Obama's First Press Conference

President-Elect Barack Obama held his first press conference yesterday, one that focused mainly on the current economic crisis. One detail that flew under the radar, however, was which networks and newpapers got to ask questions, or, rather, which one didn't get to ask a question. As Media Bistro notes, one network who was not called upon sticks out: Fox News.

interesting to see how the conservative network adjusts to a political reality in which the Democratic Party holds the White House and substantial majorities in both houses of Congress. Michael Wolff, a Vanity Fair columnist who is writing an authorized biography on Rupert Murdoch's career and family, claims that even Murdoch is embarrassed by Fox News:

Confirming the worst fears of millions of dedicated fans, the Fox News Channel really has gone soft on Obama. That's at a time when viewers are counting on it to remain a key opposition voice during a disturbing political shift away from freedom and prosperity.

According to columnists Rush & Malloy of the New York Daily News, Fox has issued a chilling edict to its hosts that they must cease criticism of Obama for the near future:

Fox News boss Roger Ailes doesn't want to spoil Barack Obama's political honeymoon, we hear. A source says Ailes has told prime-time hosts Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Greta Van Susteren to lay off the President-elect - at least for a while. "We're not going to have any personal attacks on Obama," a network insider says. "The public has spoken - we must treat him with respect."

This confirms an almost-identical account your Radio Equalizer was given Wednesday evening from a key source. That person contends the order came from the top: Rupert Murdoch himself.

Keith Olbermann has won the Worst Liar in the World Award once again.

His latest big fib is not a new one.

He continues to claim that he is beating “The O’Reilly Factor,” the longtime king of cable news programs hosted by Bill O’Reilly of Fox News.

But the numbers show otherwise. But that apparently doesn’t bother Olbermann.

MSNBC took out a full-page ad in The New York Times proclaiming “A Sweeping Victory” for its ratings and declared “Countdown With Keith Olbermann” the No. 1 cable news program.

Independent ratings consistently show O’Reilly gets about twice the ratings Olbermann does.

According to TVbytheNumbers.com, a leading Web site that analyzes the Nielsen ratings, O’Reilly’s program averaged about 4 million viewers a night during the month of October, compared to Olbermann’s average of about 2 million.

Olbermann not only overlooks the fact that O’Reilly trounces him, he claims the opposite is true.

The spectre of pointy-headed alien subversives was crucial to the election of Reagan and Bush. In the most powerful nation on earth, one adult in five believes the sun revolves around the earth; only 26% accept that evolution takes place by means of natural selection; two-thirds of young adults are unable to find Iraq on a map; two-thirds of US voters cannot name the three branches of government; the maths skills of 15 year-olds in the US are ranked 24th out of the 29 countries of the OEC

religion - in particular fundamentalist religion - makes you stupid. The US is the only rich country in which Christian fundamentalism is vast and growing.

Iraq War: We don't have to wait to see Barack Obama tested by a foreign crisis. His judgment was already tested on Iraq and found wanting. John McCain passed the test, and a holocaust was avoided.

In early September, while taping a segment for Fox's "O'Reilly Factor," Obama grudgingly admitted the surge of U.S. troops had "succeeded beyond our wildest dreams." Despite that, even with the benefit of hindsight, he still would have opposed it.

Obama was asked by ABC's Terry Moran: "If you had to do it over again, knowing what you know now, would you support the surge?" Obama replied: "No, because keep in mind that . . . " An incredulous Moran interrupted, "You wouldn't?" Obama continued:

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the U.S. elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said. That would wreck Obama's plan for a quick and dangerous withdrawal.

By the way - Palin is not a millionaire and did not have a full campaign wardrobe ready to pull out of the closet. Notice that no one asks who does Michelle Obama’s hair and how much that costs. The fact is that women have to look good on TV. Put Katie Couric out on CBS with no makeup, imperfect hair and cheap clothes and see what happens. Bill O’Reilly could get away with it, Alan Colmes gets away with it every night, but not Katie or any other women who are on TV a lot.
