Too many patients, too little time. Sandra Clarke, a nurse in Eugene, Ore., looked in on a patient not expected to live through the night. "Will you sit with me?" he asked.

Clark assured him that she would, but that first she had to check on her other patients. Ninety minutes later, she hurried back to the man's room — only to discover he had died.

Those feelings of responsibility and compassion — from Clarke and from other patient advocates — have given birth to a movement spreading to U.S. hospitals across the nation. The goal: to ensure every patient has a fellow human being at his or her bedside at the time of death.

"The two things people fear the most about dying are being in pain and being alone," Clarke says. "We try to honor the wishes of the dying."

And a surprising number of people don't have family members available to them — whether because of sudden, catastrophic accidents or physical or emotional distance.

Tags: death, comfort, human, companionship

<clipSource>http://www.latimes.com/features/la-he-dyingalone4jun04,0,5171689.story?coll=la-tot-features&track=ntothtml</clipSource>

Words in your brain

clipped by: wildcat

Clip Source: www.sharpbrains.com

Brain Teaser: Words in your brain, learn as you exercise!

Do you know where words are stored in your brain...?

In your temporal lobe! Here is a drawing of the brain so you can see where your temporal lobe is (in green) on a profile view of the right side of your brain.

As you know your brain has two sides (two hemispheres) connected by the corpus callosum. So you have one temporal lobe on each side of the brain.

Words in the brain are not stored randomly. They seemed to be quite organized. Research has shown that words that are often heard together (such as salt and pepper) or words that share some meaning (such as nurse and doctor) are connected or associated in the brain. Once you hear one, the other is activated.

Here is a brain exercise whose aim is to stimulate the connections or associations between words in your temporal lobe.

Ready to stimulate connections in your temporal lobe(s)? Please don't check them until you have trid to solve all the pairs!)

Tags: brain, words, training

<clipSource>http://www.sharpbrains.com/blog/2008/02/09/brain-teaser-words-in-your-brain-learn-as-you-exercise/</clipSource>

still kissing after all these years ....

clipped by: syncopath

Clip Source: www.nydailynews.com

Nurse in iconic V-J Day Times Square photo still kissing

<img src="http://clipmarks.com/image_cache/syncopath/512/FB534022-F3BA-4453-B96C-9B69D070F7B5.jpg" alt="Edith Shain, 90, is still nimble enough to reenact her famed 1945 kiss (below) with “South Pacific” cast member Nick Mayo. Her father was a Scottish soldier, and her mother a Jamaican. Mary learned her nursing skills from her mother, who kept a boarding house for invalid soldiers. Although technically 'free', being of mixed race, Mary and her family had few civil rights - they could not vote, hold public office or enter the professions. In 1836, Mary married Edwin Seacole but the marriage was short-lived as he died in 1844.

Clip Source: en.wikipedia.org

Mary Jane Seacole

was a mixed-race LONDON (AFP) -
Britons are losing their grip on reality, according to a poll out Monday which showed that nearly a quarter think Winston Churchill was a myth while the majority reckon Sherlock Holmes was real.

The survey found that 47 percent thought the 12th century English king Richard the Lionheart was a myth.

And 23 percent thought World War II prime minister Churchill was made up. The same percentage thought Crimean War nurse Florence Nightingale did not actually exist.

Three percent thought Charles Dickens, one of Britain's most famous writers, is a work of fiction himself.

Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi and Battle of Waterloo victor the Duke of Wellington also appeared in the top 10 of people thought to be myths.

Meanwhile, 58 percent thought Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective Holmes actually existed; 33 percent thought the same of W. E. Johns' fictional pilot and adventurer Biggles.

<clipSource>http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/britainpeoplehistoryoffbeat</clipSource>

Tallest Dog Meets Smallest Dog (Great Pics)

clipped by: BartendingBear
clipper's remarks: 42" vs. 4" = ZOWIE!

Clip Source: www.dailymail.co.uk

Despite their radical difference in size, these two dogs have something in common - Gibson the Great Dane and Boo Boo the toy Chihuahua are both world record holders.

Measuring a whopping 107cm, gentle giant Gibson was named tallest dog back in 2004. Joining him in the hall of fame for 2007 is tiny Boo Boo who only measures 10.16cm tall and is smaller than Gibson's head.

The tiny mutt was only about the size of a thumb when she was born; so small, in fact, that she had to be fed with an eye dropper every two hours before she could eventually nurse a bottle. Now she is a diminuitive diva.

A young auxiliary nurse appears to sponge his face and hands.

"Nurse," he mumbles from behind the mask, "Are my testicles black?"

Embarrassed the young nurse replies, "I don't know, I'm only here to wash your

face and hands."

He struggles again to ask, "Nurse, Are my testicles black?"

Again the nurse replies, "I can't tell. I'm only here to wash your face and hands."

The ward sister was passing and saw the man getting a little distraught so she marched

over to inquire what was wrong.

"Sister," he mumbled, "Are my testicles black?"

Being a nurse of longstanding, the sister was undaunted. She whipped back the
bedclothes, pulled down his pajama trousers, moved his penis out of the way, had a
good look, pulled up the pajamas, replaced the bedclothes and announced, "Nothing

is wrong with them!!!"

At this the man pulled off his oxygen mask and asked again, "Are my test results back???

<clipSource>http://www.jokesgallery.com/joke.php?joke=1079&id=1</clipSource>

Dying on American Airlines. "She cannot get up, and nothing on the plane works."

Oliver said he then asked for the plane to "land right away so I can get her to a hospital," and the pilot agreed to divert to Miami, 45 minutes away. It's amazing, or perhaps just depressing, how often people in scientific fields and even in positions of responsibility will both believe and promote utter nonsense in place of verifiable, reliable scientific facts. Is it just wishful-thinking on their part or a sign of failures to teach them the basics of the scientific method?

A forum member writes:

My sister is in a Master's program at a local university studying to be a nurse practitioner. Yesterday, she told me that her teacher lectured on personal energy fields. The teacher believes that disruptions in that person's energy field is what makes one sick. Antibiotics and other drugs make one well by restoring the energy field to its proper balance.

I have trouble seeing this sort of lecture as anything other than irresponsible — a complete abdication of personal and professional responsibility, never mind an abdication of all reason and rationality.

Tags: science, pseudoscience, new age

<clipSource>http://atheism.about.com/b/a/259423.htm</clipSource>

Medical Terminology

clipped by: coconutshell
clipper's remarks: Pelvis..

Clip Source: www.dyenn.com

Terminology

The martyr sacrifices themselves entirely in vain. Or rather not in
vain; for they make the selfish more selfish, the lazy more lazy, the
narrow narrower.

It may seem a strange principle to enunciate as the very first
requirement in a hospital that it should do the sick no harm.

I walk up to him. "Shall I give you a hand?" Dad begins to snigger, abandoning any attempt to make sense of the situation. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our backs to Mum, who paces around the landing with a newly fitted catheter in her hand.

The catheter has been put in by nurse Marianne to enable our GP, who will be with us in half an hour, to give Mum a lethal injection. But instead of having a moment of peace with us, as Marianne suggested, Mum demands that we clean the toilets. Both upstairs and downstairs.

My brother, Maarten, is sitting on the edge of the bath, staring out of the bathroom window.

"Imagine," he mutters.
