Nurse in iconic V-J Day Times Square photo still kissing

The famed kissing nurse in the iconic 1945 Times Square photograph is back in New York to serve as a grand marshal in Tuesday's Veterans Day Parade.

More than six decades after her image thrilled a nation, 90-year-old Edith Shain even got a kiss from another young man in uniform Sunday.

Nick Mayo, 25, who plays sailor Richard West in the Lincoln Center production of "South Pacific," gave Shain a smooch - and a long dip backstage.

"He's getting tired," she giggled. "Don't drop me!"

Remembering that celebratory kiss, Shain, who was a nurse in the now-demolished Doctors Hospital on the East Side, said she regretted never getting the dashing sailor's number.

"In retrospect, I should have said, 'Hey, wait a minute!'" the spry woman laughed.

My Shawshank Redemption

Lancaster, Calif. - Next September will mark my 20th year in jail. It is not an anniversary I'm particularly proud of. I was convicted of murder and hopelessly sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

When I arrived at the infamous Pelican Bay Prison, I was shocked right out of my criminal-minded circuit of stupidity. The flow of in-house narcotics profits didn't appeal to me anymore. My drug-dealing days had already brought me to terrestrial hell.

That desire to build on the better part of me swelled, but with little comfort and no outlet. With fervent disillusion, I came to see the California Department of Corrections (CDC) as nothing more than an empty shell.

Ironically, it wasn't until I found myself in trouble (for being too friendly with a nurse), that I was transferred to the state prison in Los Angeles County, host of the Prison Honor Program.

In modern times, America has led the world in scientific discovery. But since 2000, the country has seen what might be termed a scientific recession.

For five consecutive years, federal investment in science has fallen, stalling endeavour and leading to despondency among America's scientists.

Within the administration of George W Bush, scientific advice has been sidelined and subjected to sustained political manipulation.

Expert advisers on vital issues such as global warming, stem-cell research and the teaching of evolution have been marginalised, ignored and even removed from office.

The Republican approach during the election campaign was no better.

It is no wonder, then, that 76 American Nobel laureates publicly supported Barack Obama – nor that there has been a dramatic lightening in mood among my colleagues in New York over the past week.

Obama understands – at least, according to his campaign literature and rhetoric – that science has the power to improve lives profoundly.

Vicar hospitalised with potato up his bum

A vicar claims a potato got stuck up his bottom after he fell on to the vegetable while hanging curtains in the nude.

The clergyman, in his 50s, told medical staff at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital that the accident was definitely not due to a sex game.

He had to undergo surgery to extract the spud from his backside, according to The Sun.

A&E nurse Trudi Watson told the paper: "He explained to me, quite sincerely, he had been hanging curtains naked in he kitchen when he fell backwards on to the kitchen table and on to a potato.

"But it's not for me to question his story."

She went on to reveal other objects removed from people's derriére, including a cucumber, a Russian doll and a carnation.

The annulment of a young Muslim couple’s marriage because the bride was not a virgin has caused anger in France, prompting President Sarkozy’s party to call for a change in the law.

The three accused, all HIV-positive, are charged with drugging gay men at sex orgies, raping them, and injecting them with blood contaminated with HIV. They are aged 39, 49 and 50.

The three, including a nurse, are accused of intentionally spreading the deadly virus at sex parties they promoted on the internet.

The trio were arrested in May last year after 14 alleged victims - 12 of whom are HIV-positive or sick with AIDS - lay charges.

The prosecution alleges the victims were sedated with a combination of ecstasy and the date rape drug GHB (gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid), before being raped or injected with a cocktail of their assailants' blood.

They face charges of aggravated assault, rape, and illegal possession of drugs and face up to 21 years in jail.

At the time of their arrest, police said two of the men had confessed to the crime and claimed to have been motivated by a pursuit of excitement.

Mystery S. Africa disease may be rodent borne

Three are dead from internal, external bleeding, others in isolation wards

JOHANNESBURG - A disease that has killed three people in South Africa and forced others into isolation wards may be rodent borne, a health official said Sunday, SAPA news agency reported.

All three have died from external and internal bleeding. The first was a patient from Zambia flown to South Africa for treatment. A paramedic who accompanied her, and a nurse from the Morningside clinic where she was taken, also died.

"The causative agent of the disease ... may be a rodent borne arenavirus related to the lassa fever virus of West Africa," SAPA quoted Lucille Blumberg of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases as saying.

Arenaviruses can cause a type of hemorrhagic fever in rodents. Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever endemic to West Africa that may be spread from rodents to humans through contact with feces and urine.

A man is lying in bed in a Catholic hospital with an oxygen mask over his mouth.

A young auxiliary nurse appears to sponge his face and hands.

"Nurse," he mumbles from behind the mask, "Are my testicles black?"

Embarrassed the young nurse replies, "I don't know, I'm only here to wash your

The ward sister was passing and saw the man getting a little distraught so she marched

Child Rape Trial Delayed

For eight months, Wheelus has sat through hearing after hearing, as attorneys argued over what evidence would be allowed in her cousin's unprecedented case. According to prosecutors, Rebecca was 10-years-old when she confided in a friend, saying her step-father, Bob Ingle, began raping her when she was eight. Rebecca testified twice before a Grand Jury and gave statements to investigators, but she died in a car crash before the case went to trial. Ingle's attorney has argued his client, who was also a Chickasaw police officer, has a right to confront his accuser in court, and now that she's dead, he wants the charges dropped.

Michael Harbin, who represents Ingle, filed a motion late last week to appeal Judge Michael Youngpeter's decision to allow the testimony of Rebecca's young friend, her sister, a doctor and a nurse, delaying the case for at least several months, according to Steve Giardini, Mobile County Assistant District Attorney.

Massachusetts lawmakers say a proposed measure that would ban parents from spanking their children, even in their own homes, is a way to protect kids from abuse. But many parents believe it's an example of government run amok.

In all 50 states, parents are legally allowed to spank their children. But in 29 states it's illegal for a teacher to practice corporal punishment, including spanking.

A Massachusetts nurse is hoping to change that and make the state the first in the nation to ban corporal punishment at home.

"I think it's ironic that domestic violence applies to everyone except the most vulnerable — children," said Kathleen Wolf, who wrote the bill.

And one mother echoed the sentiments of many, saying, "I don't want the government telling me how to raise my children."

Nineteen countries have banned corporal punishment, and some child-rearing experts believe one day the United States will do so as well.

Here was Chip as I found him: curled up, cold, appearing to be dead, in the middle of a trail in the Olympics.

Over the next hour, as I held him in my hand, he warmed up and started to move. Here he is nestled in my fleece hat. He’s just a few weeks old ... eyes still closed, very immature.

What to do with a chipmunk on a 15 mile hike? Especially a chipmunk that, now warmed up, is hungry and trying to nurse.

I smashed up some nuts and dried fruit from my trail mix, mixed it with water, and fed it to the eager baby with a syringe from my first aid kit.

Needing my hands free for the hike, I found the perfect spot for Chip ... I emptied the water from my Nalgene bottle, put the fleece hat in the bottom to make a nice bed, and snuggled him inside. He had a good view of the rest of the hike, though it was a bit tinted ...

Back home, he gets his first real meal of chipmunk-appropriate formula.

In less than a week, his eyes are open!

As the days go by, he gets more and more mature.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The looming threat of Hurricane Gustav forced President Bush to cancel his planned valedictory address before the GOP national convention Monday night.

For many delegates gathering here, that's not a bad thing.

Everyone assembled in St. Paul hates the circumstances that forced Bush's absence; concern about Gustav dominated every conversation. But given the deeply conflicted emotions that swirl around the president from within his party, Bush's decision to forgo the occasion saves Republicans an awkward moment.

The view toward Bush from this convention is complex. Some delegates praise him for a job well done. Others nurse resentments over a host of Bush actions — the government's botched and insensitive response to Hurricane Katrina, ironically, is at the top of that list.

But most feel a sense of disappointment for what might have been.
