Gov. delays decision on killing wild horses

RENO, Nev. – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management will round up fewer wild horses and try to shuffle funds within the agency to hold off for now on killing large numbers of the animals in an effort to control herds and spiraling costs, an official said Monday.

About 33,000 wild horses roam the open range in 10 Western states, half of those in Nevada. The horses and burros are managed by the BLM and protected under a 1971 law enacted by Congress.

The National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board is considering ways to help spur adoptions that have slowed in recent years and to curb population growth as a way to reduce long-term holding costs.

Some advocates who oppose euthanizing horses say herd sizes are a result of years of agency mismanagement. They also say horses are given short shrift on public lands because they compete with livestock for forage.

VAST numbers of marine "jelly balls" now appearing off the Australian east coast could be part of the planet's mechanism for combating global warming.

The jellyfish-like animals are known as salps and their main food is phytoplankton (marine algae) which absorbs the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in the top level of the ocean. This in turn comes from the atmosphere.

Mark Baird of the CSIRO said salps were notoriously difficult for scientists to study in the laboratory and consequently little attention has been paid to their ecological role until recently.

Dr Baird was part of a CSIRO and University of NSW marine survey last month that found a massive abundance of salps in the waters around Sydney. They were up to 10 times what they were when first surveyed 70 years ago.

JUST one pair of adult hen harriers remains in the entire Lothian and Borders region, research has revealed.

It has been estimated the area's expanses of moorland should be able to home 50 pairs of the birds of prey.

However, this year just two nest sites have been occupied and of two pairs alive at the start of the year, just one now remains, accordin

g to a draft report by the Raptor Study Group.

Illegal persecution has widely been blamed for the drop in numbers.

There are currently about 800 pairs of hen harriers across the UK, the majority being found on the west coast of Scotland, where managed grouse moors are uncommon.

Robin Harper, Green MSP, has lodged a motion with the Scottish Parliament calling for the government to urgently investigate why the breeding population of hen harriers has collapsed in Lothian and Borders.

It is one of those jokes neurologists regularly share when the subject turns to patients complaining of memory lapses: When you can't remember where you left your glasses, there's probably no need to worry. When you can't remember you wear glasses you're probably in trouble.

During the first several decades of life, we layer memory upon memory -- the smell of a mother's hair, the light touch of a first kiss, the multiplication tables, driving directions, telephone numbers and the skills and knowledge of an occupation. By about age 25, however, a human's memory has typically peaked and a long period of decline begins.

But around about the half-century mark, cognitive performance starts to slide noticeably. Keys and glasses are forgotten. Names, places and words linger on the tip of the tongue.

I am not Catholic, and therefore do not view sins in this way. The basic Christian view is that one sin can keep you out of heaven- ie Hell is not a punishment but the result of separation from God for all eternity.

After 1,500 years the Vatican has brought the seven deadly sins up to date by adding seven new ones for the age of globalization. The list, published yesterday in L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, came as the Pope deplored the “decreasing sense of sin” in today’s “secularized world” and the falling numbers of Roman Catholics going to confession.

The new deadly sins include polluting, genetic engineering, being obscenely rich, drug dealing, abortion, pedophilia and causing social injustice.

The Catholic Church divides sins into venial, or less serious, sins and mortal sins, which threaten the soul with eternal damnation unless absolved before death through confession and penitence.

It holds mortal sins to be “grave violations of the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes,” including murder, contraception, abortion, perjury, adultery and lust.

Paul Hollander's "Political Pilgrims" documents the gullibility, the boundless capacity for self-delusion, and the ecstatic fetish for Great Leaders displayed throughout the 20th century by large numbers of American and European intellectuals. These Smart People cheered the Soviet Union, applauded Mao, drooled over Castro, celebrated the Sandinistas - all the while dismissing those persons suspicious of centralized power as "anti-intellectual."

Of course, consistently these "anti-intellectuals" were proven right as the heroes of the "intellectuals" were revealed to be blood-thirsty bastards. Is there reason to suppose that the "intellectuals'" still-raging libido for Great Leaders and Big Plans is today any more rational than it was during the tragic episodes documented by Hollander?

Vick wants to play, but what team would risk it?

A race horse he bought for $60,000 died of colic, the Atlanta Falcons are still trying to hit him up for millions they paid him, and the IRS and the state of Georgia want nearly $1 million in back taxes.

In 2006 he made nearly $15 million. Recently he reported total income of $12.89 for an entire month.

That’s $12.89 as in 12 dollars and 89 cents. This from someone who, before things went terribly bad, categorized a $1,000 check to his mother as “chump change.”

The numbers are cold, but they have to warm the heart of any animal lover sickened by what once went on at Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels. To many, seeing Vick stripped of the material things he and his fellow millionaire athletes like to enjoy is almost as good as watching him go to prison in the first place.
