1. In Case of Emergency - The worldwide Emergency Number for mobiles is 112. Even if you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and you dial 112, the mobile will search any existing networks to establish the emergency number for you. Interestingly, this number can be dialed even if the keypad is locked.

2. Lock Your Keys in the Car? - If your car has a remote lock/unlock device (and you have a second one, say at home - aside from the one on your keychain that's locked inside the car) you can call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone, hold your phone about a foot from your car door, and have the person at home press the unlock button on the device, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other remote for your car, you can unlock the doors.

3. Secret Battery Power - Imagine your cell battery is very low, you are expecting an important call, and you don't have a charger. Nokia phones come with a reserve battery. To activate it, press the keys *3370#. Your cell will restart with this reserve, and show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

4. Disabling a Stolen Phone - To check your mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #. A 15-digit serial code will appear on the screen. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. If your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.

When we say "mobile media," this isn't what we usually have in mind. Still, props go to Robert Bernocco, an Italian IT professional who penned an entire 384-page science fiction novel using the T9 text system on his Nokia cellphone.

"It really was a time management issue. He had a book in him and really wanted to write it but found he just didn't have the time to sit and do it on a computer," said Gail Jordan, PR director at the book's publishers, Lulu.com, in the Reuters article.

Here we have a great little YouTube video showing off just how far we have come in the world of mobile phones. Without having to watch the video, I am sure you already know just how much they have advanced, but its still an interesting watch as they point out some interesting tidbits and facts along the way. For example, did you know that the Motorola StarTAC in 1996 was not only the first to offer a clamshell design but the first to also include a vibrate feature or that the Nokia 3210 in 2000 was the first with both an internal antenna and also T9 predictive text.

The FBI appears to have begun using a novel form of electronic surveillance in criminal investigations: remotely activating a mobile phone's microphone and using it to eavesdrop on nearby conversations.

Kaplan's opinion said that the eavesdropping technique "functioned whether the phone was powered on or off." Some handsets can't be fully powered down without removing the battery; for instance, some Nokia models will wake up when turned off if an alarm is set.

The U.S. Commerce Department's security office warns that "a cellular telephone can be turned into a microphone and transmitter for the purpose of listening to conversations in the vicinity of the phone." An article in the Financial Times last year said mobile providers can "remotely install a piece of software on to any handset, without the owner's knowledge, which will activate the microphone even when its owner is not making a call."

So you want something simple to do your part? Just unplug your cell phone charger.

When your phone is charging it's only using about 5% of the power it sucks from your outlet. That other 95% adds up to a lot of wasted energy, especially if you leave it plugged in minus the phone.

Of course you could get rid of that conventional charger all together and go wireless with Wild Charge, or opt for a solar powered charger. (Solar powered cell phones are still a little ways off.)

Soon your cell phone may even remind you to unplug. Last year, the European Commission's mobile industry task force (led by Nokia) announced that cell phones will include alerts to remind people to unplug the charger once the phone is fully charged.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has teamed up with cell phone makers, service providers, and retailers to promote cell phone recycling.

Partners in the EPA's Plug-In to eCycling program for cell phones include AT&T Wireless, Best Buy, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia, Office Depot, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Sprint, Staples, and T-Mobile. The old phones can be dropped off at retail stores or mailed back to the manufacturers.

"Recycling a cell phone offers an opportunity for everyone to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save energy, and conserve natural resources," the EPA said Tuesday in a release. "If Americans recycled 100 million phones, we could save enough upstream energy to power more than 194,000 U.S. households for a year."

Reusing those 100 million cell phones would save enough energy to power more than 370,000 U.S. homes each year, the EPA added.

London starts digital cash trial

London commuters are getting the chance to swap the cash in their pocket for a digital wallet.

500 travellers have been issued with Nokia phones which swap digital cash via the technology used for the capital's Oyster travel card.

Swiping the phone against special posters will give participants access to information or local maps.

The trial uses the same Near Field Communications system behind the Oyster card.

The phones will be loaded with £200 for the users to spend during the six-month trial.

Using that cash on the transport system will be simple enough, but the triallists may struggle to find shops where they can make small payments.

The contactless payment terminals are only installed in around 1,000 shops and cafes - mainly in the City of London and at Canary Wharf. Customers can use the phones or cards to make payments of up to £10.
