In 2007, Google´s philanthropic arm invested about $10 million in a US kite company called Makani. An Italian company called Kitegen has a multi-kite scheme that could generate a gigawatt of power, as much as a standard coal plant.

Clip Source: www.physorg.com

High-flying kites tethered to generators could supply as much as 100 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 100,000 homes, according to researchers from the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands.

The scientists have recently demonstrated that flying a single 10-square-meter kite could produce 10 kilowatts of power, which could supply electricity for about 10 homes.

In their next experiment, the researchers plan to test a 50-kilowatt version, called Laddermill. Eventually, their goal is to build a multi-kite system that could generate a full 100 megawatts.

Electricity produced by kites in the wind could be inexpensive, too. The researchers predict prices to be comparable with generating electricity using coal power, and half that of using wind turbines.

kites generate power by pulling on their strings that are attached to generators on the ground. After reaching their maximum height, the kites are reeled back down to repeat the process.

When Catholic protesters recently shut down a New York exhibit displaying a naked, life-sized Jesus sculpted from chocolate, the outcry wasn't totally unexpected. Labeled offensive by critics, the artwork touched an angry nerve by pushing religion and nudity -- two substances that historically don't mix -- into the limelight. While the media was quick to exploit the story, it also expressed surprising modesty when it came to the naked Christ, avoiding the full frontal and opting for photos of the Lord's backside.

But in Europe, and particularly the Netherlands, where bakeries display anatomically-correct marzipan nudes in their front windows right next to chocolate bunnies and chicks, such furor over confectionary draws a complete blank. On this side of the Atlantic, when it comes to nudity, Europeans happily assert they've got absolutely nothing to hide.

Still, in America, being naked remains complex.

Tags: usa

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/module/printversion/50732</clipSource>

115-year-old Woman's Brain in Tip-Top Shape

clipped by: wildcat

Clip Source: www.livescience.com

A Dutch woman who reached 115 years of age and remained mentally sharp throughout life also had a healthy brain when she died, a new study finds.

The woman's brain showed almost no evidence of Alzheimer's disease. The finding suggests Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia are not inevitable, as had been suspected.

"Our observations suggest that, in contrast to general belief, the limits of human cognitive function may extend far beyond the range that is currently enjoyed by most individuals," said lead researcher Gert Holstege, a neuroscientist at the University Medical Center Groningen, in The Netherlands.

At age 82, the Dutch woman made arrangements to donate her body to science after death. She contacted Holstege when she reached age 111, worried that her body was too old to be useful for research or teaching purposes. The neuroscientists reassured her that, contrary to her belief, they were particularly interested due to her age.

Not only does this finding help explain why the brain is able to work properly when the body's demands for fuel and oxygen are highest, but it goes a step further to show that the brain actually shifts into a higher gear in terms of activity. This opens doors to entirely new areas of brain research related to understanding lactate's specific neurological effects.

To reach their conclusion, the researchers looked at research that compared the blood running to and from the heads of volunteers undergoing strenuous exercise. They found that the blood on its way to the brain contained considerably more lactate than blood flowing from the brain.

Tags: brain, lactate, glucose, neurological effects

<clipSource>http://www.elements4health.com/human-brain-shifts-into-higher-gear-during-exercise.html</clipSource>

New Hypoxia Execution - Totally Humane & Cheap

clipped by: righthand
clipper's remarks: ...Emerging from the chamber, he believes the test to push his life to its limit has failed.

Nor has he any recollection of his inability to reopen his oxygen supply or to put his mask back on.

"I fooled you, didn't I?" he says triumphantly.

"No, Michael, death was your final destination today," says Meeuwsen, who trains fighter pilots for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Just ten seconds from unconsciousness and less than a minute from death, Michael Portillo has no idea he is in any danger at all

"Flick the switch, Michael,"

But the former politician, still capable of sight, sound and coherent speech, does not reconnect his oxygen supply

"Put your oxygen mask back on or you will die,"

Again Portillo ignores him as he continues the journey to the edge of his existence

A few seconds pass and then the scientists can wait no longer

Physiologist Hans Wittenberg, who has been monitoring his subject in an altitude chamber mimicking atmospheric conditions at 29,000ft, snatches Portillo's mask and clamps it back over his nose and mouth

Portillo drinks in the oxygen-rich mixture and begins to recover from his extraordinary encounter with his own mortality

Yet throughout the experiment he has remained calm and happy to the point of euphoria

Tags: uk, new

<clipSource>http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23430941-details/How+Michael+Portillo+was+left+seconds+from+death+as+he+investigated+'the+science+of+killing'/article.do</clipSource>

You Can Die of a Broken Heart

clipped by: abailart

Clip Source: news.bbc.co.uk

It is possible to die from a broken heart, mounting evidence shows.

A review of recent work, published in The Lancet, found that the risk of death increases by up to a fifth following bereavement.

Investigator Margaret Stroebe of Utrecht University, The Netherlands, said the psychological distress caused by the loss played a big part.

Heart experts say people who lose a partner often adopted unhealthy habits such as smoking and poor diet.

One study found men were 21% more likely to die after the loss of their wife. Widows had a 17% increased risk of death.

The risk appears to be highest in the early weeks following bereavement and decreased with time.

Men who lose

On the positive side, there is good evidence indicating that the availability of personal support networks are a significant element in helping people who have been bereaved.

"Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a supportive family around. This is where bereavement support networks, such as Cruse Bereavement Care, can help

Tags: bereavement, broken heart, psychological effects on health

<clipSource>http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7132167.stm</clipSource>

Are there nuclear reactors at Earth's core?

clipped by: wildcat

Clip Source: www.nature.com

Nuclear reactors could be burning deep beneath the ground, two scientists have claimed. They say that uranium could become sufficiently concentrated at the base of Earth’s mantle to ignite self-sustained nuclear fission, as in a human-made reactor.

This is not the first time that natural ‘georeactors’ deep inside Earth have been proposed, and the idea has previously been greeted with scepticism by geoscientists. But physicist Rob de Meijer of the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa, and geochemist Wim van Westrenen of the Free University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, believe that their new proposal1 is more plausible.

Radioactive decay of unstable isotopes of heavy elements such as uranium happens all the time beneath Earth's surface.

Spontaneous ignition

Yet it is clear that natural nuclear reactors can occur. Crustal rocks at Oklo in Gabon, Africa, bear unambiguous evidence of spontaneous ignition of uranium fission in mineral deposits 1.7 billion years ago.

Tags: amazing earth, nuclear reactors, nature

<clipSource>http://www.nature.com/news/2008/080515/full/news.2008.822.html</clipSource>
