clipper's remarks: I am adopting a polydactyl today, so I was doing some research; the Hemingway museum has a neat history with these cats.

The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is home to approximately sixty cats. Normal cats have five front toes and four back toes. About half of the cats at the museum are polydactyl, which means they have extra toes. Most cats have extra toes on their front feet and sometimes on their back feet as well. Sometimes it looks as if they are wearing mittens because they appear to have a thumb on their paw.

Boydell effigy

clipper's remarks: William Fitz William de Boydel died about 1275. The effigy was originally in the churchyard, was given to Warrington museum and returned to the church in 1874 with some "restoration" from a stonemason in 1875. It shows him cross legged, which normally indicates that he was on one of the crusades, of which there were four in the 13th century. The story has been disputed in two articles. J. J. Phelps (1) in 1927 claimed that effigy was discovered buried with the font in the restoration of the church in 1873. He clamed that the armour shown was of a later pattern than that used in 1275 and may be John, the son of William Boydel. Archer Hodgkinson (2) proposed that the effigy was of William Boydel but was not made until the early 14th century when armour styles had changed. He supports the idea that it was brought into the church from the churchyard as it was seen by Ormerod in 1818.

Unlike traditionally dark natural history museums, the new Academy is filled with light and life. Glass is used extensively in the exterior walls, creating open, airy galleries and sightlines to the surrounding parkland. And, the exhibits in the building are filled with 38,000 live animals - including African penguins, an albino alligator, colorful rainforest birds and butterflies, and the world’s deepest display of living corals.

One of the world’s most innovative museum building projects has reached completion. After nearly a decade of planning, the California Academy of Sciences opened its new doors to the public in September. Designed by Pritzker Prize winner Renzo Piano, the building is topped with a 2.5-acre living roof and employs a wide range of energy-saving materials and technologies.

The Academy is the only institution in the world to house an aquarium, planetarium, four story rainforest, natural history museum and world-class research facility under one roof.

Chipmunks, mice and other small mammals pretty much moved up in the world as Yosemite National Park’s climate warmed during the last century.

As temperatures rose, these species tended to edge upward to higher and cooler ground, says Craig Moritz, director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology in Berkeley, Calif.

McCain's "overhead projector" debate comment

clipper's remarks: Actually referred to the Zeiss planetarium projection system at the world-famous Adler Planetarium, which is falling into disrepair, and no longer has replacement parts. Here's a pic of the "overhead projector." Planetariums in NY and LA have already rec'd federal funding to replace Zeiss systems. They don't sell them at OfficeMax.

Republican nominee John McCain criticized Democratic nominee Barack Obama in Tuesday night's debate for supporting an unsuccessful $3 million federal funding request to help pay for a new projection system at the Chicago planetarium. In McCain's view, the "overhead projector" was an example of Obama's approach to pork-barrel spending.

Adler President Paul Knappenberger defended the request. The museum wants to spend $10 million to update its original, 78-year-old domed Sky Theater auditorium, including replacement of the huge, 40-year-old Zeiss planetarium projection system, which is falling into disrepair with no replacement parts available

More than 30 million people have seen the Zeiss sky shows at the Adler, at least a third of them schoolchildren, Knappenberger said. He noted that planetariums in New York and Los Angeles received federal funding in recent years to replace aging Zeiss systems.

clipper's remarks: AS if this "Associate Professor" (I am bowled over) does not have to namedrop a school from the city where I first went to school, CHICAGO, he drops "the University that today has added yet another Nobel Prize winner in the sciences for the US" anyway.
Three million dollars? If the benefit to the "children" is so great, let the parents of Chicago, the parents of Illinois or, BEST YET, the people who attend such science events, AS I OFTEN DID AT THE AMAZING CHICAGO MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY pay for it. My parents took me to that museum, with the submarine and the NYC apartment sized washing machine. I think we paid, like, an ADMISSION AT THE DOOR.
Last year I could not come CLOSE to paying for the Health care I was prescribed. I could not come close to affording my medication. Frankly, I could not care less about a parent actually having to pay a dollar a child to get into the museum where people suffering FAR WORSE than I am could use that money simply to LIVE AND BREATHE.

I am an Associate Professor of Astronomy at the University of Chicago (the University that today has added yet another Nobel Prize winner in the sciences for the US). I would like to comment on Sen. McCain's statement during the today's debate that Sen. Obama has earmarked "$3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Ill. My friends, do we need to spend that kind of money?"

The way Sen. McCain has phrased it suggests that Sen. Obama approved spending $3 million on an old-fashioned piece of office equipment (overhead projector).

The 3 million is actually for an upgrade of the SkyTheater - a full dome projection system, which is probably the main attraction of the Adler Planetarium and is quite sophisticated and impressive piece of equipment.

I find it appalling that Sen. McCain would call a science education tool for public (largely children) for
a historic planetarium with millions of visitors a year a wasteful earmark.

This is part of an abstract art museum in Japan. There are two clear acrylic glasses
about a foot apart and water is filled inside. The top surface is also filled with about 4 to 5 inches
of water so that it just look like water.

The Cassette Tape Skeleton

Cassette tapes are near extinction, considering CDs, DVDs, Blue Ray and other innovative disk coming along. And the following skeleton is one wacky creation for this statement. The creation belongs to Brian Dettmer, I guy famous for altering common media such as old books, maps, record albums, and cassette tapes and transforming them into works of art. The following skeleton is currently on display at the International Museum of Surgical Science.

At a time when the gulf between religion and science is growing ever greater, an artist has erected a temple for scientific worship.

Jonathon Keats, designer of the petri dish God, built The Atheon to get people thinking about what a scientific religion (or religious science?) would look and feel like.

Keats' conception of that idea took shape as a two-story building complete with stained-glass windows patterned after cosmic microwave background radiation and a liturgy based on the sounds of the Big Bang. The Atheon opened Sept. 27 at the Judah L. Magnes Museum in Berkeley, California.

But, could science replace religion?

The question has intrigued both rationalists frustrated at the persistence of what they see as superstitious dogma, and religious believers — as well as all-purpose skeptics — unwilling to promote science, with its mixed and messy history, to a position of absolute authority.

Tattoo culture under the spotlight

In the past, tattoos used to be mainly a badge of belonging and were generally the preserve of armed forces personnel, bikers and tribes.

On 7 October, the Dana Centre at London's Science Museum is putting tattoo culture under the microscope, looking at not only contemporary fashion, but the history and medical implications of having this procedure and how to get rid of a tattoo.

Katie Maggs, associate medical curator at the Science Museum, said there would be a collection of late 19th Century tattoos on display and the equipment used to make them.

The event will look at how tattoo use has changed and examine whether improving technology may mean they do not need to be a permanent adornment.
