Artificial Sand Dune to House New Museum

If you happen to be driving through the desert near Doha, Qatar and notice an unusual number of Bentleys and Ferraris parked in front of a sand dune, you may find you're actually looking at the Museum of Modern Arab Art, a two-level, air-conditioned 350,000-square-foot facility celebrating over 10,000 works of art.

The museum, designed by architect Rafael Viñoly in NYC, will be completed by 2011, and will show off a collection of 5,000 paintings, 700 antiques, sculptures, metalwork and ceramics, a calligraphy section—not fancy party invitations, mind you, but elaborately ornate murals and manuscripts ranging from the early Qur'anic period to modern times—and other areas will include photography and applied arts. It may not surprise you to know that this collection is actually entirely owned by one dude, Sheikh Hassan Bin Mohammed Al-Thani, which he started amassing 10 short years ago.

Banksy turns tunnel into gallery (pics)

Graffiti artist Banksy has turned a south London tunnel into a half-mile long exhibition space, but the elusive artist kept its location secret until the last minute.

The artist added his trademark stencil-style murals to the walls of the tunnel in Waterloo's Leake Street, including an image of a knife-wielding hoodie.

Madonna and Britney's Spears' kiss at the 2003 MTV Awards is also depicted, plus a car crashing into a tree. Banksy teamed up with 29 other street artists for the exhibition.

During the official three-day exhibition Banksy will allow other artists to add their own stencil work to the tunnel walls alongside his art.

The Queen, Boris Johnson and Tower Bridge are among the subjects of the official exhibition, which opens to the public on 3 May.

Banksy has seen his popularity greatly increase over the past few years, with art collectors bidding up to £208,000 for his work, and the walls they are displayed on.

Its likely that most people got their first look at Art Deco at the movies or in pictures from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industrials Modernes (Paris, 1925). This event set the stylistic tone of early Art Deco; buildings based on earlier neo-classical styles but with the application of exotic motifs such as flora and fauna, fountains and chevrons, typically arranged in geometric patterns. Luxurious, elegant and dramatic, Art Deco had it all, while still being accessible to ordinary folk (and usually derided by architectural critics).

The Art Deco skyscraper made its debut in lower Manhattan in 1923.

Artists in Afghanistan were painting using oils as far back as the 7th century, research shows, hundreds of years before oil paint was used in Europe.

Samples from paintings, dating from the 7th century, were taken from caves behind two statues of Buddha that were blown up as un-Islamic by Afghanistan's hardline Taliban in 2001.

The paintings in 12 of the 50 caves were created using oil paints, possibly from walnut or poppy, according to scientists at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in France.

The oldest known oil painting, dating from 650 A.D., has been found in caves in Afghanistan's Bamiyan Valley, according to a team of Japanese, European and U.S. scientists.

The discovery reverses a common perception that the oil painting, considered a typically Western art, originated in Europe, where the earliest examples date to the early 12th century A.D.

"Since most of the paintings have been lost, looted or deteriorated, we are trying to conserve the intact portions and also try to understand the constituent materials and painting techniques," Yoko Taniguchi, a researcher at the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties in Tokyo, told Discovery News.

"It was during such analysis that we discovered oily and resinous components in a group of wall paintings."

Painted in the mid-7th century A.D., the murals have varying artistic influences and show scenes with knotty-haired Buddhas in vermilion robes sitting cross-legged amid palm leaves and mythical creatures.

India was commemorating the 60th anniversary of Mohandas K. Gandhi's assassination Wednesday with his family planning to scatter the peace icon's ashes in the sea off this bustling metropolis.

Gandhi, who led the non-violent struggle for independence from Britain, is still revered as the moral conscience of the nation, and pictures of his face are everywhere in India, from the country's rupee notes to murals along the highway.

To honor the nonviolence leader, Gandhi's followers will carry his ashes through the streets of Mumbai to the coast of the Arabian sea, where his descendants will throw some his ashes into the ocean.

Gandhi's ashes were preserved by an Indian businessman who sent them to a museum in Mumbai last year.

Ancient "Fire Temple" Found in Peru

November 12, 2007—A massive clay temple with colorful paintings and an altar for fire worship has recently been unearthed in northern Peru, archaeologists announced Saturday.

The temple dates back 4,000 years and is among the oldest sites discovered in the Americas, said archaeologist Walter Alva, who led the team that made the find.

The temple was built by an "advanced civilization" that predated the Inca by several centuries, Alva told the Reuters news service.

"This discovery shows an architectural and iconographic tradition different from what has been known until now," he said.

The large, vibrant wall paintings found at the site are likely the oldest murals ever found in the Western Hemisphere, he added.

Some of the paintings feature red-and-white designs, and one depicts a deer being hunted with a net.

The large temple complex was unearthed near the city of Lambayeque, about 470 miles (755 kilometers) from the modern capital of Lima.

LIMA (Reuters) - A 4,000-year-old temple filled with murals has been unearthed on the northern coast of Peru, making it one of the oldest finds in the Americas, a leading archaeologist said on Saturday.

The temple, inside a larger ruin, includes a staircase that leads up to an altar used for fire worship at a site scientists have called Ventarron, said Peruvian archaeologist Walter Alva, who led the dig.

It sits in the Lambayeque valley, near the ancient Sipan complex that Alva unearthed in the 1980s. Ventarron was built long before Sipan, about 2,000 years before Christ, he said.

"It's a temple that is about 4,000 years old," Alva, director of the Museum Tumbas Reales (Royal Tombs) of Sipan, told Reuters by telephone after announcing the results of carbon dating at a ceremony north of Lima sponsored by Peru's government.

"What's surprising are the construction methods, the architectural design and most of all the existence of murals that could be the oldest in the Americas," he said.
