AS A special-forces agent in the French Navy, Michel Malalo has clandestinely entered several African countries by sea to extract endangered French nationals. Almost all the enemy fighters he encountered carried the AK-47, a widely used assault rifle renowned for its rugged reliability. But the AK-47 has a serious drawback: glint, which gave Mr Malalo an advantage in firefights. Made with steel, the AK-47 reflects light. “It’s flashy—and from afar,” says Mr Malalo, who took advantage of glint giveaways when shooting at the enemy. Mr Malalo, who left the special forces uninjured six years ago, says the French assault rifle, the Famas, is superbly non-reflective even in bright light.

Chavez Postpones Joint Military Exercise With Russia

Venezuela has launched joint military operations with various nations.

The upcoming Venezuela-Russia operation will be the first of its kind in the Americas.

The Venezuelan Navy and Air Force will work with four Russian warships with some 1,000 soldiers aboard in the exercises in the Venezuelan territorial waters, according to earlier reports citing senior officials of the Venezuelan military.

Since Chavez took office, Venezuela has boosted its military cooperation with Russia.

CARACAS, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced Sunday that a series of joint military exercises with Russia, originally scheduled for mid-November, will be postponed.

"We are still at the preparatory phase, (and) we are not ready yet for these operations to take place in November," Chavez said during his weekly TV and radio program "Hello, President."

Noting the exercises could be held "at the end of November or December," Chavez said the Venezuelan Armed Forces will be better prepared by then rather than at the originally scheduled time, as a joint anti-drug patrol operation with Brazil was slated for Nov.2-14.

"We do everything in a transparent form, and we emphasize that Venezuela is a strategic ally of Moscow ... Venezuela is free (to make its own decisions)," said Chavez in reaction to opposition criticisms that the maneuvers will bring Russian bases, nuclear submarines and atomic bombs to Venezuelan territory.

Russia and Iran both see the US as a toothless tiger, and Russia basically proved it recently in Georgia.. Putin basically said (without saying it) , the US can't touch me.. they're in debt, their military is stretched thin, and I'm running the biggest oil producing country on the planet.. they wouldn't dare.. and he was right.. and Iran knows pretty much the same thing.. and this is a DIRECT result of the fiasco in Iraq. The Bush years have weakened the US while strengthening our most dangerous enemies.

The US taxpayer is building roads and bridges in Iraq (while our own fall apart) while the Pro Iranian government over there sits on a $80 billion dollar SURPLUS due to high oil prices

The Iraq War was funded by borrowing money, because Bush cut taxes during war time.. something that's never been done in US history. This lead directly to the largest deficits ever created

During the RNC convention in St. Paul, Minn., delegates passed the party platform, which contained a few references to LGBT people. The platform mentioned “the incompatibility of homosexuality with military service,” which means the party continues to support the military policy “Don't Ask, Don't Tell.”

The platform also mentioned the party's continued support of a Federal Marriage Amendment, which would ban same-sex marriage across the nation. The platform also went after activist judges who rule in favor of advancing LGBT rights.

One of the most talked about news coming out of the RNC was the announcement of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate. Palin supported a 1998 Alaska constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Also, one of the first things she did when elected to office was veto a bill that would have granted same-sex partners of state employees domestic partner benefits.

But then there is the curious disclaimer that "there is no evidence the contractors...or Pentagon knew" they would be used in an attack on S. Ossetia. What! Then what were they training them for? There is no evidence the Financial Times looked for any evidence either. Please try and convince us that no one in the Pentagon (filled with neocons like Feith, and neocon contractors like James Woolsey of Booz Allen Hamilton with access to the Pentagon) knew that Georgia would attack--when the U.S. is its full ally!

US military trained Georgian commandos

The US military provided combat training to 80 Georgian special forces commandos only months prior to Georgia’s army assault in South Ossetia in August.

The revelation, based on recruitment documents and interviews with US military trainers obtained by the Financial Times, could add fuel to accusations by Vladimir Putin, Russian prime minister, last month that the US had “orchestrated” the war in the Georgian enclave.

The training was provided by senior US soldiers and two military contractors. There is no evidence that the contractors or the Pentagon, which hired them, knew that the commandos they were training were likely be used in the assault on South Ossetia.

Mr Putin said on CNN on August 29: “It is not just that the American side could not restrain the Georgian leadership from this criminal act [of intervening in South Ossetia]. The American side in effect armed and trained the Georgian army.”

For its "Pledge of Allegiance video" on Tuesday night, the Republican National Convention used stock footage of a staged military funeral, along with actors dressed as soldiers and sailors. CBS has the story:

It was a video that was supposed to elicit soaring patriotism and real emotions about the Pledge of Allegiance. But to do that, it used fake soldiers and a staged military funeral instead of the real thing.

CBS News found that the footage of the 'funeral' and soldiers is what is called 'stock' footage. The soldiers were actors and the funeral scene was from a one-day film shoot, produced in June. No real soldiers were used during production.

The footage, sold by stock-film house Getty Images was produced by a commercial filmmaker in Chicago. Both Getty and the production company, Mr. Big Films, confirmed that the footage was shot on spec and sold to the Republican National Committee.
