clipper's remarks: Back in 1998/99, myself and a co-worker were brainstorming on computing ideas. We came up with an idea for a computer screen that would act like a kiosk of sorts, for the elderly. Realizing that there was a need to keep in touch and up to date with technology, it 'felt right' to bring something like touch screen for the elderly or those that could not type, into age (pun intended). Our idea was to set up these kiosk style monitors in senior assisted/non-assisted homes; on campus clubhouses, etc so anyone could send email and play a few games. Easy stuff that would not be intimidating or difficult to learn.

Idea blown away when presented to our employer as not 'marketable enough.'

About 3 weeks ago, I walked into Sam's Club; the computer section. A round table was set up with HP Touchscreen monitors. Curios, I walked over to inspect and could not get close enough except to watch. Persons much older than myself standing around the table, playing games by touching the scre

Last week Apple released the Magic Mouse, a new computer mouse with a "multitouch" interface that responds to movement of fingertips across its surface in addition to conventional click-and-drag actions. Archrival Microsoft isn't ready to launch a competing product just yet, but the company does have plans for its own multitouch mice. Earlier this month, researchers presented five prototypes at the User Interface Software and Technology in Victoria, British Columbia, and their work won the symposium's best paper award.

The patent calls for a large fleet of specially equipped ships which would mix warm water from the ocean surface with colder water down below, according to five new patents that include Microsoft's chairman as a co-inventor. That could then reduce or perhaps eliminate the heat-driven condensation which hurricanes feed upon, thus significantly reducing their intensity.

Epson gets into interactive coffee tables

Watch out Microsoft Surface, because there’s a new touch-sensitive interactive coffee table in town: the X-Desk.

Much like Surface, X-Desk lets users interact with digital content through a flat 1024 x 768, 52in multi-touch screen that can also communicate with other gadgets, including mobile phones and cameras, placed onto its surface.

X-Desk will recognise up to 16,000 objects using “Smart Tags” and gesture recognition allows multiple users to, say, draw out objects on its surface.

The success of the iPhone has given rise to a new grammar of touch control while the advent of multi-touch in Windows 7 will further accelerate the evolution of human computer interfaces, the South by SouthWest festival has been told.

The minute-long sequence in the film Minority Report in which Tom Cruise manipulated images on a screen using simple gestures has quickly become a cliche of future human computer interfaces.

"Hollywood is leading the way and showing what the future is going to look like."

The days of the mouse may be numbered.

Joe Engalan, director of development for Vectorform, which produces applications for Microsoft's Surface device, said: "Minority Report will happen eventually but with five people touching something virtual somewhere.

Many agree that the success of the iPhone has initiated the first common standards around multi-touch: pinch, touch and sweep.

Microsoft Surface developers have created several different physics simulators based on the applications they are working on, and naturally some are more realistic that others. I've watched a few videos demonstrating various basic physics engines, but now I've finally found a good set of videos that shows off what the Microsoft Surface can do. The author is Dave Brown, a developer who works over at one of UK's Microsoft Technology Centers and is paid to create proof of concepts for organizations working with Microsoft products. This video shows off basic 3D objects moving on a 2D-plane. While watching other physics videos I've always wanted to see the objects that are moved around actually "roll," and this video shows that at 1:04:

iPhones and iPods Banned at Gates' Home

According to linda Melinda in an interview with Vogue, the Gates' kids can play Xbox, run Windows 7, and massage photos on Microsoft Surface all they want, but they can't have iPods or iPhones:

There are very few things that are on the banned list in our household. But iPods and iPhones are two things we don't get for our kids.

There you have it. Los Apple prohibidos. I can imagine them sneaking iPods and iPhones into their house the same way I used to sneak porn magazines in mine. I wonder if the PlayStation 3 or the Wii are banned from their home too or if this is just some kind of particular hatred towards Apple and the iPod and iPhone—since the first was the thing that made Apple the renewed icon it is today, and the second obliterated Microsoft's Windows Mobile efforts in one sweep.

Ideum MT2 Multitouch Table beats Microsoft Surface in size & resolution

Exhibit and media design firm Ideum have cocked a snook at Microsoft with the launch of their MT2 Table, a multitouch-table which, at 50-inches running at 1280 x 720, is both larger and higher resolution than Microsoft’s Surface. The MT2 Table, which can respond to multiple points of contact across the display and recognize gestures, is intended for museum use, and as such has an aircraft-grade aluminum frame and thick tempered glass top. Underneath there’s a 2100 ANSI projector with a 2000:1 contrast ratio.

The first MT2 Tables to be installed will be at The Don Harrington Discovery Center in Amarillo, Texas and Vulcan Park and Museum in Birmingham, Alabama, with Ideum working on custom apps for each. No word on pricing, though I’m sure if you ask nicely enough they’ll build you one for your lounge.

There’s No Zune Phone Coming; But Even If It Was, Would It Be Big News?

But everyone is missing the point. Even if Microsoft were to announce a Zune phone, you have to consider whether it be big news. The simple answer: no. On the surface, a Zune phone implies a phone capable of playing music, and possibly buying music over-the-air. That’s old news

I’d argue that in order for Microsoft to impress the audience at CES, it will have to do more than release a Zune phone. What people are looking for is a much broader announcement that either incorporates a new operating system, or a new user interface that easily allows consumers and business employees alike to do things that are in high demand today, like access the Web, applications and multimedia.

When Doug Engelbart and his team at the Stanford Research Institute in California designed a computer controller encased in a carved-out wooden block, with wheels mounted on the underbelly, one researcher nicknamed it a 'mouse'. 'We thought that when it had escaped out to the world it would have a more dignified name,' Engelbart recalled later. 'But it didn't.'

Xerox developed the mouse during the Seventies and launched the first commercial product with the Xerox Star computer system in 1981. Microsoft is getting heat this week as emails surface as a result of a lawsuit over the “Vista Capable” marketing campaign of 2006. When Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system fell behind schedule, Microsoft decided to launch a campaign that said PCs on sale during the holidays were capable of running Vista.

But the lawsuit alleges that Microsoft misled consumers by allowing the Vista Capable label to be placed on machines that really shouldn’t have had it. Intel reportedly pressured Microsoft to make the lower than recommended minimum hardware requirement so that Intel wouldn’t get stuck holding the bag on its inventory of Intel chip sets with less capable graphics.
