relaxing in a sitting position, reading and summarizing a text, and completing a
series of memory, attention, and vigilance tests on the computer. After 45
minutes at each activity, participants were invited to eat as much as they
wanted from a buffet.

The researchers had already shown that each session of intellectual work requires only three calories more than the rest period. However, despite the low energy cost of mental work, the students spontaneously consumed 203 more calories after summarizing a text and 253 more calories after the computer tests. This represents a 23.6% and 29.4 % increase, respectively, compared with the rest period.

Tags: obesity, calories, intellectual work

<clipSource>http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/09/080904102804.htm</clipSource>

Brain, Rememering is like Reliving

clipped by: singer
clipper's remarks: interesting, what was theoretical is now biologically shown- research about alzheimers and more will be helped by this in future studies.

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

<NYT_HEADLINE type=" " version="1.0">

Since ancient times, thinkers and scientists have sought to explain how we perceive, interpret, and shape our existence. However, until very recently, researchers interested in these questions have had to rely entirely on conjecture or indirect evidence. Now, recent technological advances in brain imaging and fresh insights into the functioning of the human brain at the level of systems, cells and molecules, provide extraordinary new opportunities for uncovering the neurological underpinnings for a large array of mental functions – from emotion and decision-making to innovation and creativity.

It is also apparent that emotion, decision-making, memory and communication, are central to our most fundamental socio-cultural endeavors

The Institute is a groundbreaking effort to make use of important new discoveries from the mind and brain sciences and confront pressing issues of our time.

Tags: brain and creativity, antonio damasio

<clipSource>http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/bci/whoweare.html</clipSource>

Big Brother Addiction gone but not forgotten - Methadone success story

clipped by: tdsmum
clipper's remarks: Well it is claimed somewhere that an elephant never forgets.
The four-year-old bull elephant, referred to alternately as "Big Brother" or "Xiguang", was captured in 2005 in southwest China by traders who used spiked bananas to control him.

After police arrested the traders and freed Xiguang a few months later, the elephant was confirmed to be suffering from withdrawal symptoms and sent to a wild animal protection centre in Hainan for rehab.

A year of methadone injections at five times the human dosage had helped wean Xiguang off his addiction.

Now clean, Xiguang was expected to arrive on Saturday at a wildlife park in Kunming, capital of the elephant's home province of Yunnan on the mainland.

Xiguang's return would cap a 1500km journey home, and mark another step in the elephant's triumph over addiction.

Tags: elephant, heroin, xiguang, big brother

<clipSource>http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,24293968-5012895,00.html</clipSource>

Ways to Raise Your IQ

clipped by: It was around 3pm, smoke break for some WTC workers, my brothers danced. The airport scenes are from September 11, 2000. I droped some atmosphere sounds on top.

I wrote and performed/edited this song and shot the red shirt video two years ago, the blue/green shirt video was 8 years ago shot by my brothers and Spitz. "Anti-bin laden" was in between sometime. I spliced them all together and split screened them in a "24" type fashion. I was trying to vent some of my frustrations about the misguided few.

When killing begins, religion ends.

Enjoy the present moment, it's a gift.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6oraJNNIOY

Tags: human rights, freedom, world, earth, war, nuclear weapons, disasters, music, videos

<clipSource>http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog&friendID=360617285&blogMonth=&BlogDay=&blogYear=&Mytoken=C178E7C1-D577-4212-8246E07ADF388E7B238928478</clipSource>

Scientists catch cells in the act of remembering

clipped by: arifsali

Clip Source: www.iht.com

Scientists have for the first time recorded individual brain cells in the act of summoning a spontaneous memory, revealing not only where a remembered experience is registered but how the brain is able to re-create it.

The recordings, taken from the brains of epilepsy patients being prepared for surgery, demonstrate that these spontaneous memories reside in some of the very same neurons that fired most furiously when the recalled event was first experienced. Researchers had long theorized that this was the case but until now had only indirect evidence.

The new study, experts said, has all but closed the case: Remembering, for the brain, is a lot like doing.

Tags: science, brain, discovery

<clipSource>http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/09/04/healthscience/04brain.php</clipSource>

Google Chrome "about:" Easter Eggs!

clipped by: maquser
clipper's remarks: haven't tried this yet but article has screen shots of all of them

Clip Source: lifehacker.com

Google Chrome's Full List of Special about: Pages

You already saw Google Chrome's humorous about:internets Easter egg, but reader nettleman points out that Chrome's got several special
about:
pages that reveal all sorts of interesting information about what's going on behind the scenes. Here's the full list, with screenshots.

memories will sometimes struggle to recall the information we need.
However, the fault is not with the memory process itself, but
instead lies with the way the person has actually used their memory
resources to create the problem. Below you will find 9 tips to
help put your memory on the right track. These are extremely basic
tips and are in no way to be considered an extensive memory
improvement program, though you will still go far following
            this:

When you plan your life, your life
becomes planned. So what you plan for is what you will get. Simple
as that. After you have set your plan, learn to become organised
around it, both physically, mentally and behaviourally.

<clipSource>http://www.geniusintelligence.com/waysimprovememory.htm</clipSource>
