Brain volume decreases with age at an estimated rate of 1.9 percent per decade, accompanied by an increase in white matter lesions, according to background information in the article. Lower brain volumes and larger white matter lesions also occur with the progression of dementia and problems with thinking, learning and memory. Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease; because the brain receives blood from this system, researchers have hypothesized that small amounts of alcohol may also attenuate age-related declines in brain volume.

Although men were more likely to drink alcohol, the association between drinking and brain volume was stronger in women, they note.

Tags: alcohol consumption, brain volume, dementia

<clipSource>http://www.elements4health.com/heavy-drinkers-have-smaller-brains.html</clipSource>

Why knowledge about emotion has accumulated so slowly ??

clipped by: einbar
clipper's remarks: "In this paper I argue that despite the general importance of emotion in the science of the mind and the ever increasing pace of research on emotion, knowledge about emotion has accumulated more slowly than for other comparable concepts, such as memory or attention, because the acceptance of these commonsense assumptions are not warranted by the available empirical evidence. I then consider what moving beyond a commonsense view might look like and what it would mean for the scientific study of emotion." An offense triggers anger. A death triggers sadness

The given quality of a person’s own experience, and the way that emotion seems to control behavior without awareness, is usually taken as proof that emotions are automatic responses to things that happen in the world over which people have little control. Knowledge, expectations, and beliefs seem to have little impact on emotion, although they can regulate a response once it has been triggered. As a consequence, people assume that emotions can overcome them, rapidly overriding whatever else they might have been doing, thinking, and feeling.

Clip Source: books.nap.edu

In this paper I argue that despite the general importance of emotion in the science of the mind and the ever increasing pace of research on emotion, knowledge about emotion has accumulated more slowly than for other comparable concepts, such as memory or attention

<clipSource>http://flickr.com/photos/amsterdamned/2870126763/</clipSource>

Air Pollution Pollutes Brains as Well!?

clipped by: nedhamson1
clipper's remarks: Heavy air pollution has and is endangering the future of your children and our society as well as others.

Clip Source: www.sciencenews.org

Mexico City’s air pollution may be undermining neural and mental functioning in some children

But that’s just the beginning — the metropolis’s dirty air may have contributed to brain inflammation and intellectual deficits in at least some school-age children, a new study suggests.

Among healthy children aged 7 to 18, lifelong Mexico City residents scored lower than their peers from Polotitlán — a Mexican city with low levels of air pollution — on tests of memory, flexible thinking, novel problem-solving skill and the ability to monitor and change one’s behavior during challenging tasks, scientists report in an upcoming Brain and Cognition. While the average adolescents showed large increases in the amount of cortisol during the frustrating situation, cortisol levels actually went down in those with severe antisocial behaviour.

These results suggest that antisocial behaviour may be more biologically-based than previously considered, just as some individuals are more vulnerable to depression or anxiety due to their biological make-up."

Clip Source: www.sciencedaily.com

Levels of cortisol in the body usually increase when people undergo a stressful experience, such as public speaking, sitting an exam, or having surgery. It enhances memory formation and is thought to make people behave more cautiously and to help them regulate their emotions, particularly their temper and violent impulses.

The new research, funded by the Wellcome Trust, shows that adolescents with severe antisocial behaviour do not exhibit the same increase in cortisol levels when under stress as those without antisocial behaviour. These findings suggest that antisocial behaviour, at least in some cases, may be seen as a form of mental illness that is linked to physiological symptoms (involving a chemical imbalance of cortisol in the brain and body).

Reduced levels of the 'stress hormone' cortisol has been linked to antisocial behaviour in male adolescents. A dense forest exists on healthy cells that is made up of glycoproteins - essentially simple sugars called saccharides. Our modern diet lacks the abyndance of these and thus scientists are trying to uncover the secrets of manufacturing these synthetically. The theory is - the faster and more complete your cells communicate the healthier you will thus become. You may add these necessary sugars into your diet and thus not stress your bodies own emergency processes by taking a product called Ambrotose, the worlds first complete glyconutrient supplement

Clip Source: www.lockergnome.com

Holographic storage

has broken a storage density record by writing 64.3 gigabytes of data onto a single square inch of disc space

Clip Source: www.cell-to-cell-health.com

"The Celera Corporation completed the mapping of the human genome on April 6, 2000. Sarah Palin is utterly unqualified to be vice president. She is a feisty, charismatic politician who has done some good things in Alaska. The next administration is going to face a set of challenges unlike any in recent memory. His house was choked with 40,000 books and 10,000 manuscripts, and he spent hours each day in the Medici library.

The negligent Magliabechi reportedly once forgot to draw his salary for a full year, but his head was "an universal index, both of titles and matter." When the Duke of Florence asked him for a particular volume he replied, "Signore, there is but one copy of that book in the world; it is in the Grand Signore's library at Constantinople, and is the eleventh book in the second shelf on the right hand as you go in."

That memory made him a human search engine for writers of the time

Surrounded by books, he lived to be 81, and in his will he left his library to the public.

<clipSource>http://www.futilitycloset.com/2008/06/14/book-lover/</clipSource>

12 Board Games to test & Increase Your Intelligence

clipped by: boozich

Clip Source: muzich.blogspot.com

Monopoly

Go: A strategic board game involving tactics, observation and cunning.
