Narcissistic Rage in the White House

The term "narcissistic rage" gets 26,000 citations in Google Scholar. It is a common feature of extreme or pathological narcissism.

While most people are pretty hard to predict, extreme narcissists are comparatively simple. They constantly hunger for ego gratification, they are immature, constantly need to demonstrate their own superiority, often need endless sexual conquests (like Bill Clinton), are manipulative, constant liars, are completely cold about the human beings they harm (like John Edwards), and they deal with frustration by uncontrollable fits of rage.

President Obama himself gave vent to sentiments about the (Fox) network, according to people briefed on the conversation... " (italics added).

So Obama didn't even keep this thing on background. He allowed himself to be quoted in his favorite rag, the New York Times. Dowd, Maddow, Herbert, and Rich did their part by going into attack-dog mode against conservatives.

With more people traveling with an assortment of portable electronics — sometimes a plane has more devices than passengers — fires are occurring on airliners with increasing frequency. More than half of the 22 battery fires in the cabin of passenger planes since 1999 have been in the last three years. One air safety expert suggested that these devices might be “the last unrestricted fire hazard” people can bring on airplanes.

“The carriers came and asked if we would allow them to have the credit card readers on aircraft and they wanted spare lithium batteries to allow them to switch out the batteries,” said Christopher Bonanti, director of the F.A.A. office of hazardous materials. “I was concerned about having spare lithium batteries, and I asked them not to do that.”

In 2004, an ABC News camera exploded on a plane being used by the presidential candidate John Edwards. A seat caught fire, causing an emergency return to the airport. Even more events go unreported, the authorities said.

Since I care more about my country than my personal pride, here's how I lost my insurance: I moved. That's right, I moved from Washington, D.C., back to Massachusetts, a state with universal health care.

In D.C., I had a policy with a national company, an HMO, and surprisingly I was very happy with it. I had a fantastic primary care doctor at Georgetown University Hospital. As a self-employed writer, my premium was $225 a month, plus $10 for a dental discount.

In Massachusetts, the cost for a similar plan is around $550, give or take a few dollars. My risk factors haven't changed. I didn't stop writing and become a stunt double. I don't smoke.

It is particularly terrifying when those same anonymous government employees at the Department attack media outlets and newspapers anonymously.

I wasn't really sure we could top last week's list of disclosures about celebrities and politicians. To recap: David Letterman is a philanderer. John Edwards is an (alleged) serial philanderer. And if there were any remaining doubts, Roman Polanksi really is a child rapist. But here's one secret I'm quite certain none of us saw coming: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is . . . wait for it . . . Jewish.
Wow.

This guy has had one helluva summer: Electoral fraud. Torture allegations. Oh, yes, and that pesky little nuclear facility he's been building. Now it turns out he's Jewish to boot? Say it ain't so, Mahmoud.

I'm also a big believer in tolerance and making room for as many people as possible under any given umbrella. As someone married to a Jewish man for 11 years with two kids we'd like to raise as Jewish, I'm all for inclusiveness when it comes to broadening the definition of "who counts" as a Jew.

But on this one I have to say, sorry, pal. You're on your own.

"Do you feel like a story?" David Letterman asked his audience last night. That's how it started. But what followed wasn't a witty anecdote involving Madonna or Sarah Palin. It was an admission of adultery and of being blackmailed. (Video posted below.)

There were no Mark Sanford-style tears. No John Edwards-esque denials. No John Ensign-y contrite admissions that it was "absolutely the worst thing I've done in my life." No shame or blame.

Just some straight-up, self-deprecating honesty. What a pleasant change of pace.

Ex-ACORN Organizer Describes Voter Sign-up Bonuses

A former Nevada director for the political advocacy group ACORN testified Tuesday that quotas were common and that he wasn't told he couldn't pay bonuses to encourage voter registration canvassers to work a little harder during last year's presidential campaign.

"No one in ACORN knew that this was illegal, up until December," Christopher Howell Edwards testified

his ACORN supervisors knew canvassers making $8 per hour were paid bonuses of $5 per shift for exceeding a quota of 20 voter registration cards last August and September.

ACORN faces 13 felony counts of compensation for registration of voters. Busefink, 27, of Seminole, Fla., faces 13 counts of principle to the crime of compensation for registration of voters.

While the guy's a jerk, he got that part right. I really, really hope those that are proud of America and it's accomplishments (knowing that we can not please the enemies of democracy or those bent on tyranny) will continue to stand up to those in politics who want to make us "like other nations". While flawed...we're still the beacon.

Beck speaks to 7,000 at Seattle: 'The American people have not surrendered'

In a sea of 7,000 fans, controversial TV and radio talk-show host Glenn Beck took his crusade to Safeco Field today, saying he is the voice of reason in a divided America.

"I am a flawed human being," said Beck, 45. "But I'm in a position to ring the bell of warning."

Outside the stadium, about 30 protesters rallied against Beck.

"We send these people to Washington and they go crazy on us,"

He criticized the media and said it "has surrendered to this government we have now. The American people have not surrendered."

Beck acknowledged that the nation's health-care system needs repair, but a higher priority for the government is to win the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and bring our soldiers home.

"He's not a racist," Hartman said. "The race card being played by the left side of the aisle is wrong."

Sponsors of Beck's talk said it was sold out and some people had to be turned away.

Two general propositions first. First, it is always sad to see someone fall from grace because of their own human fallibilities.

Second, it's always the cover-up, not the sin, that really makes the situation into a nine-act soap opera.

Experience teaches us that copping to the Big Badness right away is by far the best strategy, but so few people learn that lesson.

And so we come to John Edwards

The other part of the tragedy, it seems to me, is that John Edwards was the candidate talking about some really important things, most particularly the plight of the rural poor. He brought uncomfortable truths - and images - to the American people when it really did nothing to further his campaign. He believed in some of the leftist principles that most candidates seemed all too willing to ignore. Now Edwards himself is easy to ignore

and that means, I fear, that the issues he represented will be once again swept under the rug, where they've spent a lot of time in the last half-century.

Oops, He Did It Again: John Edwards Continues His Epic Fall From Grace

Long story short, Andrew Young, a former aide to Edwards, revealed a number of sordid details pertaining to the Edwards-Hunter affair in a book proposal, which was examined by the New York Times. Among the claims:

• Edwards is in fact the child’s father and, what’s more, has known it all along;
• Edwards promised Hunter that he would marry her in a rooftop NYC ceremony once his cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth Edwards, passed away; and,
• The Dave Matthews Band would be performing at said ceremony.

news reports are now suggesting that Edwards is considering an abrupt reversal of his public posture and may very well claim paternity.

The "extraordinary odds" of a 43-year-old conceiving naturally are only 1-3 (or maybe 5)% in a given month, says the article.

Question: what are the odds in two months? This is just a basic probability question. What are the odds of not getting pregnant two months in a row? Say there's a 5 percent chance of getting pregnant, there's a 95% chance of not getting pregnant. The odds of not getting pregnant for two months are thus (.95*.95=.9025). So there's a .05 chance in one month but a .0975 chance of pregnancy in two months. For three months it's (.95*.95*.95=.857). For a three month affair, that'd be a 14.43% chance of pregnancy. Still unlikely but not really extraordinary.

Say an affair lasts for 16 months, from February 2006 to May 2007 perhaps. At 3 percent per month, the math works to a 41% chance of getting pregnant. At 5% it's a 59% chance of pregnancy.
