The Washington Post stressed Helms “rode his divisiveness to victory.” The New York Times obituary threw punches, describing him as the senator “whose courtly manner and mossy drawl barely masked a hard-edged conservatism that opposed civil rights, gay rights, foreign aid and modern art.”

The networks were no better. NBC’s Lester Holt blatantly copied the Times: “He staked out firm positions against everything from communism and foreign aid to civil rights and modern art.”

let's recall how Helms was eulogized on the Ed Schultz radio show last year. Fill-in host Norman Goldman said this:

"That race-baiting, racist, horrible Jesse Helms ad got him ahead of Harvey Gantt and got him reelected in 1990. Harvey Gantt would have made a much better senator and Jesse Helms shamelessly played the race card. He was a miserable rat. The world's a better place without him. I hope he's down there in hell roasting with Jerry Falwell."

On July 4 of last year, when Sen. Jesse Helms died, NBC reporter Martin Savidge didn’t find a "lion of the Senate," but an ultra-rightist and a bigot:

Wonkette featured the headline "See You In Hell: Jesse Helms Finally Dead." They cheered: "Jesse Helms was apparently still alive, and now he’s dead, hooray! He was a sour troll and a bigot, and it’s a testament to every rotten thing about this country that for a quarter century, he was one of the most powerful people in American politics."

Ken Layne on America Online’s Political Machine blog, whose headline was "Jesse Helms, American Garbage."

Layne said Helms died "25 years too late," and he was "a mean little troll whose heart was so wrecked by wickedness that doctors had to patch it up with coronary valves from a pig."

Gawker said being nice to Helms would be unthinkable, akin to saying "Hitler was kind to animals."

Leftist blogger Phil Nelson summed it up for mean-spirited liberals

"Jesse Helms Is Finally Dead. Let’s Have a Cookout."

Almost a quarter century ago, the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy addressed Jerry Falwell's Liberty Baptist College, and made an eloquent case for the separation of church and state, and for tolerance of people of all faiths and no faith, to an audience who would likely be hostile to the message.

The separation of church and state can sometimes be frustrating for women and men of religious faith. They may be tempted to misuse government in order to impose a value which they cannot persuade others to accept. But once we succumb to that temptation, we step onto a slippery slope where everyone’s freedom is at risk. Those who favor censorship should recall that one of the first books ever burned was the first English translation of the Bible.

President Eisenhower warned in 1953, “Don’t join the book burners...the right to say ideas, the right to record them, and the right to have them accessible to others is unquestioned -- or this isn’t America.”

Bristol is doing what 10's of thousands of young adults are doing, getting pregnant without benefit of having the father around. Where is the surprise that this joke was laid out there. Gov Palin is pushing this" young girl, raping young women" way too far. This is alot for just one joke Letterman made. In her quote on Letterman inviting the Gov and her husband, she said, "......... no intention of providing a rating's boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show,""Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman." They can't believe Americans are thinking Letterman would think of Wilow as an object of attention. I liked Palin, but she is going in the direction of Jerry Falwell with this DRAMA. Being an Independent in this country is the only way of being assured of not getting sucked into the extremists of both parties.

New York Lawmaker Calls on CBS to Fire Letterman for Palin Comments

New York State Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb, a Republican, is calling on the CEO of CBS to fire David Letterman for crude comments he made about Sarah Palin and her daughter.

"We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news, and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter, the 18-year-old girl, who is — her name is Bristol, that’s right, and so, then, now they’re upset with me," Letterman said.

"I would like to see him apologize to young women across the country for contributing to kind of that thread that is throughout our culture that makes it sound like it is OK to talk about young girls in that way — where it's kind of OK, accepted and funny to talk about statutory rape," she said. "It's not cool. It's not funny."

"These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl.

Liberty Univ. expels campus Democrats

Liberty University, the school in Virginia founded by the late Jerry Falwell, has expelled the Democratic Party club on the campus, saying that the national Democratic Party's views contradict the university's mission.

Said a school official in an email to the Democratic club, according to the Lynchburg (VA) newspaper: "The Democratic Party platform is contrary to the mission of Liberty University and to Christian doctrine (supports abortion, federal funding of abortion, advocates repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, promotes the "LGBT" agenda, hate crimes, which include sexual orientation and gender identity, socialism, etc.)."

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe held a conference call with reporters in support of the Democrats at Liberty University.

Of course, one must ask: Just how many Dems attend Liberty?

In this action we see what theological conservatism amounts to: suppression, denial, exclusiveness, sectarianism, and a seething contempt for freedom of thought and speech. It's appalling and an affront to democracy.

Liberty University has ordered its fledgling College Democrats club to shut down, saying the group stands against the conservative Christian school's moral principles.

Club president Brian Diaz said he was shocked to be notified by e-mail last week that the club was being banned by the private university in Lynchburg founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell. The university first recognized it in the fall.

Vice president of student affairs Mark Hine said in the e-mail sent to Diaz on May 15 that the Democratic party violates the school's principles by supporting abortion, socialism and the "'LGBT' agenda," referring to lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people. The e-mail said that even though the campus group "may not support the more radical planks of the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party is still the parent organization of the club on campus."

Liberty University bans College Dems

(CNN) – Liberty University, the evangelical school in Virginia founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, is drawing heat Friday for its decision to revoke recognition of the College Democrats' chapter on campus.

According to the Lynchburg News & Advance, the school decided a week ago the organization "stood against the moral principles" held by the school and therefore could no longer be sanctioned.

Childress says she was told by Mark Hine, the vice president of student affairs, that "'You can't be a Democrat and be a Christian and be a university representative.'"

I agree with Jason. They're a private university and as such, they can do whatever they want.

Although things like this make a degree from Liberty University slightly less valuable that one from Central Alabama Beauty College.

They should put "liberty" in quotes. That's really the last thing they want.

This should be grounds for revoking their tax exempt status.

This is just too funny! A liberal Ivy League student decides to enroll at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University in Virgina and write a book exposé (The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University) supposedly showing the intolerance that must be there, or so he thought. The liberal student, however, was surprised to find little of the expected intolerance but is now finding plenty of it from the left because his book was not an outright condemnation of Liberty University nor of Jerry Falwell whom he met during his semester there

Wow, that must be a pretty good brainwashing program they've got there. That or this guy is weak sauce. You wouldn't catch me praying to some magic sky daddy if I spent a THOUSAND years at Liberty "University."

Will Geert Wilders Show His Film on the Koran?

Wilders in the past has compared it to Hitler's Mein Kampf and wants it banned; the film will likely make arguments along these lines: "With this film I'm trying to show not only in words but also images exactly what I mean," he says.

Unlike the British, American, Danish governments or the Vatican, the Dutch government has prepared. It has adopted a two-track policy of (1) trying to stop the screening and, should that fail, (2) getting ready for crisis mode. An article in today's Volkskrant, "Vrees voor rellen rond Koran-film van Wilders" (translated as "Fear of riots over Wilders' Koran film") provides some details. By my count, there have been six major episodes in modern times in which Muslims rioted and killed in protest to some Western-based person making comments about Islam:

1989 – Salman Rushdie publishes his novel, The Satanic Verses.

1997 – The U.S. Supreme Court refuses to remove a 1930s frieze showing Muhammad as lawgiver.

2002 – The American evangelical leader Jerry Falwell calls Muhammad a "terrorist."

2005 – An incorrect story in Newsweek, reporting that American interrogators at Guantánamo Bay, "in an attempt to rattle suspects, flushed a Qur'an down a toilet."

February 2006 – The Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten publishes twelve cartoons of Muhammad.

September 2006 – Pope Benedict XVI quotes a Byzantine emperor's views that what is new in Islam is "evil and inhuman."

Every one of these cases shares one particular feature: the persons who set off the ruckus had little to no idea that their views would lead to riots and deaths. Muslim disapproval, yes, not upheaval.

You will never be able to work with the Republicans because they hate you. Believe me, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter are the norm not the exception. First, is the Religious Right. Second, are the neoconservatives. Both groups share one thing in common: they are driven by fear and paranoia. Between them there is no Republican "center" for you to appeal to, just two versions of hate-filled extremes.

Mr. President, you need to forget a bipartisan approach and get on with the business of governing by winning each battle.

To quote the biblical adage sir, don't cast your pearls before swine.

Now 74 years later, we try to define what marriage is. The image of a young couple, sitting in a horse carriage, being swept up in the holiday spirit, perhaps hanging on extra tight to their special loved one, thinking about marriage is supposed to be one that society encourages.

When Rick Warren hears this holiday song lyric, what image does he have?

The last thing Warren is likely thinking about two men, or two women, deeply in love, because he thinks gay marriage is wrong

Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson would likely concur.

But Warren is more dangerous: he comes across as not-so-bad. He's not like that weird Falwell or Robertson. He seems normal.

Is there a religious reason behind this? Even the most conservative religious figures can't pull up Biblical interpretations to justify this stand
