The credit crisis, which has been building slowly for the past year, is now moving so fast that governments around the world are finding it impossible to keep pace.

On Saturday Angela Merkel, the German leader, criticised last week’s decision by the Irish to guarantee all deposits in their leading banks without consulting other European countries. The Irish Government said that the move was forced on it by the threat of a run on one of its banks. Only a day later Ms Merkel was forced to take almost the same action in almost the same circumstances.

Chicago-area protest of raid on immigrant community

clipper's remarks: It's sad that in Chicago area that they have seemingly gotten over past fears of Irish, Italian, Polish, Chinese, etc. legal and illegal immigrants - that our fears of immigrants from Spanish speaking countries still causes so much fear. What happened to Chicago with the "Big Shoulders?"

Jose Herrera said he came to the United States when he was 7. Arrested at an Immigration raid recently and detained for three months in Cook County Jail, he has a court case pending in which he's trying to gain permanent residency.

"I have a 7-year-old child to support," said Herrera, 25. "These raids don't do any good. They just separate families."

He joined more than 100 people Wednesday night who marched and held a candlelight vigil in the western suburbs in an effort to halt raids, address inhuman conditions at Immigration detention centers and urge enactment of a state law that would give clergy access to detainees in county jails.

The Irish Republic's economy has fallen into recession after shrinking for a second quarter in succession.

The economy is now facing its most difficult period since high unemployment and emigration hit in the early 1980s.

Economists pointed to the collapse of a decade-long bonanza in Ireland's property market, coupled with a slump in construction activity.

The country has enjoyed a boom since the late 1990s, with multinationals arriving to take advantage of one of the lowest corporate tax rates in Europe.

Bloxham Stockbrokers chief economist Alan McQuaid said:"Although the domestic side of the economy is contracting at a significant rate, the external side - the multinationals - is holding up quite well, but one would have to question how long that's going to last."

I personally think that most wars are caused over religion, and when this guy from scotland, picked on Ireland, he hit a sore spot with me! the irish troubles with catholics against protistants! Slowely I find myself realising that we are all like flowers, we are born and we live a lifetime and we die, thats it! some of you religious people will get on my case I know, but please back off, this is my view of life!

A unidentified flying object spotted by East Rutherford resident, Sebastian Steinberg and posted on YouTube by Radio Irish, a local radio station run by Rutherford resident Sean McCarthy, has some believing there was a UFO in our midst for a brief period last week.

Husband and wife team in $1m bid to release film that turns focus on the effects of banning DDT

ENVIRONMENTALISTS are under artistic attack again — this time from two Irish film-makers. Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney, producers of a controversial mining documentary that portrayed environmentalists as oppressors, have started an online campaign to raise $3.5m (€2.2m) to secure a cinema release for their latest film, which accuses Al Gore of scaremongering.

The husband and wife team spent 18 months and $1m (€600,000) making Not Evil Just Wrong. It looks at the effects of banning DDT, a chemical used to stop the spread of malaria in the third world, because it was found to be poisonous to wildlife and the environment.

McAleer described environmentalism as something middle-class people did to keep poorer members of society in their place and said their documentary shows the true cost of “global warming hysteria”.

It’s summer and I know as well as you do that summer brings parties, BBQ’s and get-togethers. With all the bridal showers, bachelorette parties, and post-baseball trips to the bar, indulging in alcoholic drinks is something most of us like to do.

So how do we avoid sabotaging the hard work we’ve been doing?

Here’s a list of drinks to help keep your damage in check:

1) Rum & Diet Coke - if you can stand the aspartame, this one is only 65 calories.

2) Vodka & Soda - also 65 calories. Try it with flavored vodka to make it taste better!

3) White wine spritzer - 4 oz of white wine topped with soda - 80 calories.

4) Bloody Mary (1 oz. vodka, 4 oz. tomato juice, dash of Tabasco and pepper) - 90 calories

5) Lite beer - my favorite is Corona Light with a wedge of lime. 100 calories.

Having just one or two of the wrong drink can pack in a lot of unwanted calories. To give you an idea of the worst drinks to have:

Prehistoric land under the sea

It's a landscape no human has even seen. And those who live right beside it had no idea it even existed.

Deep below the sea, off the north coast of Northern Ireland, a dramatic geological mystery has been discovered.

Huge cliffs, vast basins and plateaus, a lake and even rivers have been found. But so far no-one is certain what caused them to end up like this deep under the sea.

The discovery was made when the seabed was being surveyed to update old Admiralty charts, drawn up in the mid-1800s.

Funded by the European Union and backed by the UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency, a survey vessel has been scanning the seabed along most of the north coast of Ireland, including the seabed north of Rathlin Island.

Most of the bottom was largely flat and unremarkable, but as the survey headed east it suddenly came across an unexpected landscape.
