Recently an ITworld reader contacted me with an interesting question: Can you configure Windows XP so that it logs on automatically but into a locked state? In other words, if the AutoAdminLogon registry value found at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon has been set to 1 and the DefaultUserName and DefaultPassword values have been configured appropriately, is it possible to make Windows lock the desktop immediately after automatic logon occurs?

Using compelling photography as a base Parisian artist JR takes street art to activist levels. His most interesting project Face 2 Face, pairs photos of Palestinian and Israeli citizens in direct proximity. These images are printed on a grand scale and pasted across eight Palestinian and Israeli cities as well as prominently on the partition wall dividing the two territories. The 25 year old artist has not only photographed the very people engaged in some of the most conflicted regions of the world, he is making social commentary in each of the places he visits.

Elegy makes strange bedfellows

In Elegy, philosopher-historian David Kepesh (Ben Kingsley) falls in love with Consuela (Penelope Cruz), who is a Cuban-American student.

Movie adaptations of the works of famous authors can serve as a form of literary criticism.

The new film, Elegy, taken from another Roth work, puts Ben Kingsley in bed with the stunning Penelope Cruz. It's a lot less jarring than Human Stain, at least in the sense that a gorgeous, unsure-of-herself Cuban-American student could fall for her brilliant, celebrated and ever-on-the-make professor. But it lacks both the sexual heat and romantic warmth to really work.

Occasionally touching, always interesting, Elegy may capture the essence of Roth, but it never lets him off the hook for being the eternal dirty old man, playing out some dirty old man's wish-fulfillment fantasy.

Have you ever been stumped in finding the right words to search for? Back when I was planning my wedding, I had a list of wedding songs in mind, but the problem was that I couldn't remember any of the artist names or song titles. So I started typing into the Google search box parts of the lyrics that I did remember -- and like magic, I saw suggestions with the artist name and song titles that I wanted! (I was opted-in to the keyword suggestions Google Labs experiment at the time). At that moment, I was so proud to be working on Google Suggest, a search feature that provides real-time suggestions while you search.

I think Hillary forgot this wasn’t a campaign speech for 2012.

Ignoring ideological content for a moment, Hillary hit all the right notes on Barack Obama and unity. But the impression she transmitted through her tone and body language was somewhat uninspired. The content was politically unhelpful and humdrum. The few times she appeared genuinely enthused were self-involved and self-congratulatory moments.

It’s as if someone had haphazardly penciled the name “Barack Obama” into a speech that was initially a recitation of Hillary’s astonishing and unparalleled accomplishments (and sporadically Bill’s, which she seemed to take credit for, as well.)

It’ll be interesting to see polling on the attitude of Hillary supporters now.

researchers at the University of Glasgow have discovered that cultural differences cause us to look at faces differently.

We found that Westerners tend to look at specific features on an individual's face such as the eyes and mouth whereas East Asian observers tend to focus on the nose or the centre of the face which allows a more general view of all the features.

Western societies are generally more individualistic, whereas East Asian societies are collectivistic

Westerners appear to think and perceive focally and Easterners globally.

Americans watching the Olympics could not escape the reality that China in particular and Asia in general will continue to outpace our country in growth while we remain mired in stagnancy and debt (much of it held by China).

How we dig out of this quagmire is the American story that Obama must tell. It is not a story of endless conflicts abroad but a potentially inspiring tale of serious economic, educational, energy and health-care mobilization at home.

Americans must band together for change before the new century leaves us completely behind.

Westerners focus on the eyes, East Asians on the nose

In the image below, the red areas show where the Westerners fixed their stares, while the blue areas were preferred by the east Asians.

Why the difference?

It could be that it's impolite in East Asian cultures to make direct or prolonged eye contact, and focusing on the centre of the face is simply a way of avoiding a social faux-pas. The second and more interesting theory, is that these strategies reflect general differences in the way that Westerners and East Asians view the world around them.

Some psychologists have suggested that Westerners view the world in an analytic way, by focusing on key features, while East Asians have a more holistic perspective where an object's context is just as important as its parts.

Update; Factcheck.org (owned by The Annenberg Foundation) has a new birth certificate story. As Texasdarlin suggests in her post, this is interesting timing since Obama has just returned from Hawaii. Indeed, what a coincidence that it's today!

The motion will be for an emergency temporary restraining order prohibiting Obama from running for president, and enjoining the DNC from nominating Obama as the Democratic presidential candidate.

According to by Jeff Schreiber at America's Right.com:

"I filed this action at this time," Berg stated, "to avoid the obvious problems that will occur when the Republican Party raises these issues after Obama is nominated.".

Berg cited a number of unanswered questions regarding the Illinois senator's background, and in today's lawsuit maintained that Sen. Obama is not a naturalized U.S. citizen or that, if he ever was, he lost his citizenship when he was adopted in Indonesia. Berg also cites what he calls "dual loyalties" due to his citizenship and ties with Kenya and Indonesia.
