clipper's remarks: ACORN conducts voter registration drives among poor and minority voters, who are under-represented in the US electorate, and lean Democratis. Suit after suit has been filed against them; ACORN has been exonerated again and again. Eventually, the heat travels to Karl Rove, and leads to the US Attorneys firing scandal (when US Attorney David Iglesias refuses to prosecute on insufficient evidence, he is fired). Simple answer: Republican bigwigs are struggling to keep the voters that ACORN registers out of the voting booth. Numbers of mis-registered voters are miniscule.

This is why it is so disgraceful for reporters and pundits to minimize and dismiss what the McCain/Palin campaign, and Republicans generally, have been doing as they become increasingly desperate

The McCain attempt to connect race and terror

in his advertising, while projecting an image of taking the high road

crashed and burned on Friday when he did not notice he was engaging in racist hate speech:

another supporter told McCain, "I don't trust Obama...He's an Arab."

Arab is a linguistic identity whereas Muslim is a religious one. Not all Arabs are Muslims

Worse than the lady's confusion between Arab and Muslim were her further obvious confusion between Muslim and dangerous.

Mr. McCain, Arab-Americans and Muslim-Americans are decent, family-oriented citizens. The only thing wrong with calling Obama by either of these modifiers is that it would be incorrect. He is not an Arab ethnically, but rather northern European and Luo (Nilotic). He is not a Muslim but a Christian

I wish I could feel more pity for these people since they are so obviously trapped in their own ignorance, fear and hatred. Really, where does that come from?

As the crowd cheered at a Sarah Palin rally this morning in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a man in the audience grinned as he held up a stuffed monkey doll with a Barack Obama bumper sticker wrapped across its forehead.

After Palin finished her remarks this morning, the man holding the stuffed monkey seemed to notice that a video camera was pointed at him, at which point he removed the Obama sticker from the doll’s head and crumpling it up in his hand. He then handed the doll to a young boy who was watching the rally from his father’s shoulders. The boy’s parents later told CBS News that they weren’t acquainted with the man who gave their son the stuffed monkey

“I don’t know how many ways you can interpret it. If you’re an Obama supporter, you’ve got an Obama sticker on your car, you’re not welcome to park here,” says Henderson.

These aren’t just isolated individuals; these sentiments are common at these rallies and becoming increasingly virulent and enraged — at the rallies and otherwise:

A billboard in West Plains, Mo., showing a caricature of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama wearing a turban has caused quite a stir in town.

The sign, located south of West Plains on U.S. 63 across from the Dairy Queen, says: “Barack ‘Hussein’ Obama equals more abortions, same sex marriages, taxes, gun regulations.”

I'm told the Los Angeles Times mailroom opened a hand-scrawled letter today that read "death to Obama" and contained a white powder that triggered a call to the FBI and a city hazardous materials team. No one was injured and the powder proved to be harmless. My sources say the letter was addressed to staff writers Richard Serrano and Ralph Vartabedian and included a demand for a retraction to their story this week that detailed flying mishaps early in John McCain's Navy flying career. The nut mail was said to carry an upside-down stamp and language about saving babies in addition to the Barack Obama threat.

It concerned me that people could be so easily manipulated into believing such fantastic claims. In some ways it reminded me of the frenzy I was told about in 1930's Germany against the already hated Jews and Gypsies. We've come too far in 50 years to allow this type of hate to enter back into American discourse.

McCain Draws Line on Attacks as Crowds Cry ‘Fight Back’

When a man told him he was “scared” of an Obama presidency, Mr. McCain replied, “I want to be president of the United States and obviously I do not want Senator Obama to be, but I have to tell you — I have to tell you — he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared" of "as president of the United States.” The crowd booed loudly at Mr. McCain’s response.

Later, a woman stood up at the meeting, held at Lakeville South High School in a far suburb of Minneapolis, and told Mr. McCain that she could not trust Mr. Obama because he was an “Arab.”

“I don’t think it’s that big a deal,” Rick Davis, Mr. McCain’s campaign manager, told reporters in a conference call on Friday. “I think political rallies have always attracted people who have an emotional connection to the outcome of an election.”
