Dogma is a very dangerous thing. It is where you become so blinded to a way of thinking that you are closed off to all other possibilities. It is where you accept something as fact without taking the time to really establish whether or not it accurate. And, like all things here today, dogma is holding you back in a big way.

5. Money

Most of the time it is your own negative emotions that hold you back in life. The opportunities for happiness and success are out there, you just need to make sure you are willing and able to get them. If anyone has any other thoughts about things that hold us back in life please drop a comment and let us know.

People are adaptable. We quickly adjust to a new life circumstance—for better or worse—and consider it normal. Although this helps us when our situation worsens, it means that when circumstances improve, we soon become hardened to new comforts or privileges. Scoring air-conditioning, a bigger house, or a fancy title gives us only a brief boost in happiness before we start to take it for granted. As Aldous Huxley wrote, “Habit converts luxurious enjoyments into dull and daily necessities.” That’s the hedonic treadmill.

One cure for this “hedonic treadmill” is deprivation. Deny yourself something, and your pleasure in it will be re-activated when the denial stops.

Deprivation is one of the most effective, although unenjoyable, cures for the hedonic treadmill.

In an effort to retain power through, “leveling the social and economic playing field” Obama’s slave owner policy initiatives tether Americans to a ball and chain style of socialistic governance that is realized by enslaving those who would otherwise be free. The President’s utopian aspiration is on track to transform Americans into chattel trapped within a restrictive dependency, robbing us of God-given liberty, preventing the acquisition of property and thwarting individual pursuit of happiness.

Barack Obama recently said, “I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slave owners.” It was while on the campaign trail that Michelle Obama reconnected with relatives and became aware that on her father Fraser Robinson’s side her great-great-great grandparents toiled as slaves in mosquito infested rice fields in the low country of South Carolina

If not for the dichotomy of the overbearing plantation-owner attitude both she and Barack Obama demonstrate–Michelle Obama’s inspiring roots would otherwise be compelling.

Obama’s approach toward government indicates that he identifies with the slave owners not with the slaves who reside in Michelle’s family tree. Obama should hearken to the words of Abraham Lincoln who poignantly expressed in an April 1859 letter, “…he who would be no slave, must consent to have no slave. Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”

If Paine was not a pure libertarian, he did have an undeniable libertarian streak. It was Paine who wrote that “society in every state is a blessing, but government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil.” And it was Paine, in Common Sense, who declared: “Some writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins. Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness; the former promotes our happiness POSITIVELY by uniting our affections, the latter NEGATIVELY by restraining our vices. Republicans Need to Dump the Neoconservatives

clipper's remarks: The republicans need a "tea party" within their own camp! The Bush and present GOP "conservatives" are pushing big government Statism as much as Democrats, with only a different slant. Wars for democracy are a key element of both parties now.

There is an insidious philosophy underlying this acceptance of the "natural" growth of statism. Neoconservative columnist David Brooks wrote ... we need "a vigorous One Nation Conservatism ... by making the nation great, individuals are able to join their narrow concerns to a larger national project."

Actually, it was originally the Democrats that used to believe in curtailing the powers of the Federal government. (This was after the Civil War where they were called Dixie-crats).

The GOP should dump the neocons

Limited-government conservatives have been undermined by big-government neoconservatives.

The founders envisioned a federal government constitutionally limited to defending our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. For that to happen, we must have at least one political party that strongly advocates limiting the power of government. For much of the 19th century, that party was the Democrats. For the early part of the 20th century and from the early 1960s through 1988, that party was the Republicans.

Today, it is difficult to find noninterventionists in either party.

It is important to realize that neocons are not just nation-building, America-first advocates. They like big government across the board.

As for the GOP, it has outwardly abandoned the limited-government principles of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan.

What happened to the Republicans? Well, the two Bush presidencies didn't help.

In the hubbub of life with kids, it's amazing how fragile happiness can seem.

One minute everyone is enjoying breakfast together, and the next the orange juice is toppled and the drawing is ruined and nobody wants the pancakes anymore. Blown out of proportion by a cranky preschooler, sulking tween, or grudge-holding parent, a single mishap can expand into a gloom that lasts for hours.

Instead, as Tolstoy said, happy families actually are all alike -- at least in that they practice common habits that help inoculate them against setbacks large and small.

Tomorrow is Halloween, by far my favorite holiday of the year. However, with what’s just gone on, I really didn’t feel like celebrating this year. Mom’s memorial service is on Sunday after all

Anyway, I just figured I’d have to skip Halloween this year. Apparently though, that’s not to be. We’re working an event tomorrow- a Howloween event; a dog Halloween festival. What could be better for me? Nothing. That is the best.

We’d been so busy with Mom the last 2 weeks, I guess I hadn’t realized that Doug wasn’t away working much. No work= no money.

overall, I’m doing OK now. It’s slowly sinking into my brain that my mom is gone and she would be the last person to say don’t work an event because of her. So, we’re going tomorrow.

So the rest of today, I’ll be busy getting everything ready for tomorrow. Who knows, perhaps it will rouse me from my funk. If anything can do it, it’ll be dogs.

Why Don’t People Smile in Old Photos

I can relate to this topic. I rarely smile in photos either. I just do not feel I have the whitest teeth and I tend to smile awkwardly. There are a number of reasons why people did not smile in old photos. They may have felt embarrassed by their teeth. Remember way back when they did not have access to the dental care we have today. Their teeth were probably horrible if they had any teeth at all. Perhaps they were all gums! They may have felt down. They just did not want to force a fake smile. However, a more realistic reason was probably that they had to stand so long in the old days. After you have to stand for so long, the happiness for taking the picture tends to fade.
