Joe is the guy I worked with who served in Vietnam, worked construction, had four kids, thought Portland micro-brews were for hippies and weirdos -- and told me one day about having to change churches, because "our pastor spends all his time talking about how bad the gays are, and I go to church for God, and I really don't think God cares who you sleep with or who you marry." Oh, and he went back to school at 45 to get a degree in architecture, so I guess he won't be Joe Six-Pack soon. His income will put him into that Better Class of People y'all think you're part of.

Joe is a writer or an actor or an artist who waits tables, pumps gas, shelves books, does landscaping, delivers pizza, scrubs toilets, and otherwise works his or her ass off all day or night to pay the mortgage so they can continue to write or act or make art.

Sure. It's a folksy, homey, cute way to euphemistically call us something very close to trashy, ignorant hillbillies. We're just not supposed to be smart enough to realize it.

So, Governor Palin et al, let me tell you who the Joe Six-Pack that you think you're talking to really is.

Joe Six-Pack isn't who you think he/she is. You don't have a fucking clue about Joe Six-Pack.

I wish I were only talking to one camp. But I'm talking to my own, too. We "liberal elitists." Because we say the same kind of things when talking about "the average American." We assume we know them, and they are the same people Palin knows.

But honestly, I know for a fact, pretty much everyone I know who will read this is, statistically, demographically, Joe Six-Pack.

Are we the Joe Six-Pack they think they know?

Her religious justifications for the invasion in Iraq sound very similar to the Muslim fundamentalists that attacked America; according to them, they were carrying out the will of Allah. Religion: why do people believe in God?

For all of us, life is full of uncertainties and difficulties, and it ends in death. Every religion claims to overcome death, to provide certainty, and reward us for being good. So great is our fear of life and death that most of us allow hope to override our intellect.

A sense of justice leads us to choose standards, and in doing so we condemn ourselves to living this life in terms of the next. If you set standards which you can easily reach, you limit the amount of self-inflicted pain you will suffer, but if you acquire, say, a Calvinist conscience you set yourself impossible standards, and berate yourself for your constant failure to live up to them.

No religion accepts us as the person we know ourselves to be. Rather, we are told that we are inadequate, unsatisfactory and helpless. We fear that this is so, and to give us hope we, like Ella, construct a fantasy about how we are superior to those who do not share our views.

Pat’s Problematic Prophecies: Robertson Sees Nuclear War On The Horizon

According to The Virginian-Pilot, the controversial TV preacher is predicting an imminent war in the Middle East that may result in nuclear attacks on coastal cities in the United States.

“In a letter on his Web site, www.patrobertson.com, Robertson said his opinion was that Israel would bomb Iranian nuclear sites between Nov. 4 and the inauguration of the United States’ new president,” the newspaper reported. “Robertson tied his warning to biblical prophesy.”

Russia, Robertson said, will jump into the war, and things will quickly get very out of hand.

“It all will conclude,” he added, “when God has rained fire on the islands of the sea and on the invading force coming against Israel.”

“We have between 75 and 120 days before the Middle East starts spinning out of control,” Robertson wrote. “If there was ever a time for fervent prayer, it is now.”

"Good," said Mr. Campbell, an Anglican who attends church most Sundays. "Can't test it. Can't prove it, can't disprove it. It's not a question for science."

I despise that chicken-hearted answer. There are two reasonable ways to address that. One is to accept the usual open-ended, undefined vagueness of the god entity and point out that the reason it can't be answered is that it is a bad question — it's not even wrong. Science doesn't answer it, but then no discipline can, because it's a garbage question like "what color are invisible elephants?" If that's what window-boy intends with his petty little gotcha, he deserves to have the inanity of his idea disparaged.

The other approach

pin the question down. What god? What actions has it taken in the natural world? How does it influence us specifically? Then you can tackle that god with science by testing the purported effects it has

THE Church of England is to offer couples greater choice on where they can lie about believing in God.

Blah, blah Jesus whatever
Previously couples could only get married in the church where they pretended to believe in God on a regular basis, or had made a solemn commitment not to smirk when talking to the vicar.

But the new laws will mean couples can marry in the same church where their parents lied about believing in God, or where their grandparents told the truth about believing in God but had no idea why.

A spokesman said: "A church provides a beautiful setting to begin your married life with at least one gigantic piece of dishonesty.

"You can make your solemn vows and maintain that vital connection between the generations, even if that connection is little more than a series of bullshit promises based on nothing."

I looked death in the face. All right, I didn't. I glimpsed him in a crowd. I've been diagnosed with cancer, of a very treatable kind.

I still cursed God, as we all do when we get bad news and pain

I believe in God

I know the lesson that we're studying is difficult. But dying is more homework than I was counting on. Also, it kind of messes up my vacation planning.

Why can't death -- if we must have it -- be always glorious, as in "The Iliad"?

I have, of all the inglorious things, a malignant hemorrhoid. What color bracelet does one wear for that?

Which brings me to the nature of my prayers. They are, like most prayers from most people, abject self-pleadings.

Do we really want everyone to be around forever?

Thus, the next time I glimpse death ... well, I'm not going over and introducing myself. I'm not giving the grim reaper fist daps. But I'll remind myself to try, at least, to thank God for death. And then I'll thank God, with all my heart, for whiskey.
