Baker said Tuesday he wrestled for months with the decision whether to run for the seat, concerned about the effects of a grueling statewide campaign on his family — he has children at home — and his legislative duties.

“We’ve seen the polls. Usually the Republicans are out in the wilderness just hoping to get in. But it’s early. She’s an entrenched, well-funded incumbent,” Baker said.

He said there is a need for health-care reform but “we don’t need the government front and center on that.” The House cap-and-trade legislation before the Senate amounts to a “global warming tax,” he said, adding that “somebody in Arkansas shouldn’t be a swing vote on that in the Senate, and I wouldn’t be.”

Last month, President Obama gave a somewhat chilling, if somewhat ignored, speech on climate change at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He stated that any scientific debate about the magnitude of global warming is unscrupulous, decrying “those who . . . make cynical claims that contradict the overwhelming scientific evidence when it comes to climate change, whose only purpose is to defeat or delay the change that we know is necessary.”

Then, the president talked tough, saying, “We’ll just have to deal with those people,” language familiar to anyone who knows the vagaries of Chicago politics.

A Senate climate change panel gives a feel-good nod to the collapsing Copenhagen process:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A controversial climate change bill cleared its first hurdle in the U.S. Senate on Thursday, allowing President Barack Obama to tout progress in the run-up to next month's global warming talks in Copenhagen.

...But Democrats are likely to fall far short of their goal of passing legislation in the full Senate before Copenhagen as Boxer's bill lacks enough support for full approval.

Meanwhile, as we brace for Copenhagen:

BARCELONA/WASHINGTON, Nov 5, Reuters - A U.N. climate treaty may need an extra year beyond a December deadline to agree details, delegates at U.N. talks said on Thursday even as a U.S. Senate committee approved a carbon-capping bill.

The Nov. 2-6 meeting of 175 nations in Spain, the last session before a U.N. accord is due in Copenhagen next month, turned gloomy about salvaging a strong deal after two years of negotiations.

James Taylor, for instance, senior fellow for environmental policy at the Heartland Institute (see a related letter on the subject elsewhere on the page today) says, “The problem for global warming alarmists is that the poles currently show no sign of human-induced global warming.” Antarctica is in a prolonged cold spell, gaining ice, not losing it. Despite Ms. Boxer’s cries of alarm, even Arctic temperatures have been relatively stable since the 1970s, according to Mr. Taylor.

Greenland just had its two coldest decades since the 1910s, and “recent temperature readings indicate the cold spell is continuing,” Mr. Taylor says. While Greenland is losing ice at lower elevations, it’s gaining ice inland, more than offsetting the losses.

Opposition is abundant when it comes to the subject of vegetarianism as a way to fight global warming. There are those organizations which primarily oppose the notion of global warming, calling it climate alarmism and claiming that the earth’s climate is in constant fluctuation. Organizations such as the Heartland Institute support what they call a common-sense approach towards environmental issues. Furthermore, they state that the issue of global warming is not urgent and that climate change reports are being sensationalized by the media. They state that the report issued by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization in 2006 contains “absurd claims” about the role that livestock has on global warming.

The Next Kyoto?

U.S. Policy: In 1997 the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Byrd-Hagel Resolution, which warned President Clinton not to enter into any global warming treaty that leaves out developing nations or hurts the American economy. This is still U.S. policy today and should serve as the overarching guidelines for the December global warming conference in Copenhagen.

An Expiring Kyoto: The Kyoto Protocol is the major global warming treaty currently in place, and it expires in 2012. The Copenhagen conference has long been seen by Kyoto proponents as critical for extending the provisions into the decades ahead.

Kyoto Not Ratified: After Vice President Al Gore agreed to the protocol, President Clinton failed to even submit it to the Senate, knowing there wasn't support for a treaty that so obviously violated the Byrd-Hagel Resolution.

Al Gore Going Green to Make Green

John Broder of The New York Times has an interesting piece on Al Gore’s financial profit tied to his global warming alarmism and push for renewable energy. Gore’s venture capital firm invested in Silver Spring Networks, a company that makes hardware and software to improve efficiency in the nation’s electricity grid.

When President Obama told a crowd at a solar power plant in Florida, ironically on an cloudy day where the sun was nowhere to be found, that $3.4 billion of the so-called stimulus package would be allocated for smart grid investment, it significantly reduced the risk of Gore’s investment: “Of the total, more than $560 million went to utilities with which Silver Spring has contracts. Kleiner Perkins and its partners, including Mr. Gore, could recoup their investment many times over in coming years.” Broder calls Silver Spring “a foot soldier in the global green energy revolution Mr. Gore hopes to lead.”

In poll, after poll, after poll, the American people have clearly expressed their preference for prioritizing economic growth over global warming. This is a major problem for those on the left who want to reorganize our entire economy under the guise of cap and trade climate change legislation. Tacitly admitting they have lost this argument, the left has shifted gears and is trying a new tack: global warming is a threat to national security. So Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) recently blogged at the Center for American Progress:

Vaccinations foregone put not only those individual children at risk but clear the path for infectious disease to spread more easily. That's not a great outcome, whether we're collectively battling the measles or this season's H1N1 flu.

"You can't minimize your individual risk," Wallace writes, "unless your herd, your friends and neighbors, also buy in."

Our children most certainly deserve safe vaccines; that's a given. I don't blame people for not trusting special interest groups. I just thought this article brought out some interesting points regarding social media.

The rise of computer literacy, high-speed Internet connections, blogging and social networks has emboldened the common man to tell his own story and, sometimes, to disdain trappings like a university degree, professional training or corporate affiliation.

Roy Spencer is listed as a policy advisor to the Heartland Institute and a contributor the George Marshall Fund, two conservative U.S.-based think tanks that have a track record of spewing global warming-denial rhetoric and whose works have been backed by significant funding from Exxon-Mobil, according to sourcewatch.org.

CHURCHVILLE, VA—The leftish Brookings Institution and the U. S. Chamber of Commerce basically agree that the energy taxes in the House Waxman-Markey bill could total $9 trillion over ten years. As an economist, I look at these forecasts and wonder “How can we possibly know?”

These estimates cover only the costs of the “user permits” that companies will have to buy. They don’t even try to measure the massive reduction in our economic output as energy costs double and triple with scarcity.
