Water

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: Unless it slaps them in the face, the typical American can't be bothered by an abstract threat. If there's a global warming event -- a mammoth hurricane, tornado, or forest fire -- in our neighborhood, then we get concerned. From this perspective, the loss of a few thousand acres of ice in a remote corner of Montana hardly seems significant. Most of us don't see it as a danger sign.

But it is. Disappearing glaciers is a harbinger of huge problems. In the West, the most obvious is drought.

Clip Source: www.alternet.org

By 2020 Glacier National Park will be "Puddles National Park" and the rest of the west won't be much better off. So where's the concern?

It's said our primeval ancestors had a simple arithmetic system: "One, two, three, many." That describes the focus of many 2008 voters, whose concerns are the economy, energy prices, Iraq, and "those other problems." As we get closer to the presidential election, most Americans aren't worried about global warming. Maybe they will be when they turn the tap and no water comes out.

In early August we toured Glacier National Park with the Sierra Club, catching a glimpse of several of the humongous ice fields. In 1910 there were 150 glaciers in the park; now there are 25, which are losing 9 percent of their mass per year. Sometime between 2015 and 2020 they'll disappear. Locals joke the 1.4 million acres will be renamed "Puddles National Park."

Why isn't global climate change seen as a more important issue?

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/water/95107/climate_change_is_already_affecting_the_west%27s_water/</clipSource>

Obama is a retread from the past

clipped by: bmeuppls
clipper's remarks: Continuing:
Wallace's May 1947 political rally in Los Angeles was the biggest political event there in years. Twenty-eight thousand people paid admission to it...
The keystone of the Wallace campaign was of course its advocacy of an American foreign policy consistent with that of the Soviet Union. Wallace defended the Communist coup in Czechoslovakia...O'Neill quotes Macdonald:
Wallaceland is the mental habitat of Henry Wallace plus a few hundred thousand readers of the New Republic, the Nation, and PM. It is a region of perpetual fogs, caused by the warm winds of the liberal Gulf Stream coming in contact with the Soviet glacier. Its natives speak "Wallese," a debased political dialect.
Here, O'Neill notes, Macdonald had fun with progressive jargon:
Wallese is always employed to Unite rather than to Divide (hence the fog), and to Further Positive, Constructive Aims rather than Merely to Engage in Irresponsible and Destructive Criticism.

Clip Source: www.powerlineblog.com

Obama does not even mention the name of Harry Truman. It was Truman's will
alone, together with the resulting efforts of the United States and British
military forces, that resulted in the airlift and its improbable success.

Also missing from Obama's account is the political context. Arrayed against Truman and the Truman Doctrine specifically and Truman foreign policy generally through the summer and fall of 1948 were Henry Wallace and his supporters urging concessions to the Soviet Union. Is there any doubt that were he alive at that time, Obama would have stood together with George McGovern among them? As Fred Schwarz notes at NRO, contrasting Obama's views with those of Dewey and Truman in the 1948 presidential race, Obama's "political views, socialist at home and internationalist abroad, are much more like those of Henry Wallace, the Progressive candidate."

Tags: politics

<clipSource>http://www.powerlineblog.com/</clipSource>

Earth as Art Gallery

clipped by: revenantdm
clipper's remarks: I have only one thing to say about this site: AWESOME! This gallery of images uses the visceral avenue
of art to convey the thrilling perspective of the Earth that
satellites provide to the viewer.

Whether warming or cooling is beneficial depends largely on where you live. Federal control of climate is therefore inappropriate. International control, even worse. Climate democracy requires local control. If the political discussion remains national during this election season, the candidates should – at the very least – choose vice presidential running mates who favor warming: at least acknowledging that the north matters.

Local climate control: how can it be done? - the facts are these. To say that climate engineering is in a pre-early stage of development is a vast understatement. There is no such thing. Governments can no more control climate globally than they can locally. We have a long, long way to go technologically before any such thing as climate democracy can become reality. Wake up and smell the crap – it’s a scam! They want to raise taxes and increase government control over earthly endeavors and you won’t get anything for it in return.

Clip Source: mensnewsdaily.com

I’ve never been one to disparage a glacier, but that doesn’t obscure my recognition of the manipulation in Mr. Gore’s message when he attempts to convince us that we have no choice. Balderdash! If government can control the earth’s temperature, then it can be forced in either direction. More importantly, if politicians are going to assume the authority to manipulate climate, voters should decide which way it goes.

Mr. Gore lives in the southern United States where I can well understand that a few degrees of cooling seems like a good thing. Try walking around Baton Rouge, Louisiana on a hot, humid summer day. Given a democratic choice, the south will likely rise in favor of cooling. But put yourself in the middle of a snowstorm in northern Minnesota and your perspective will change dramatically. Several degrees warmer would be a relief. Make it colder and Minnesota will suffer physically and economically.

Tags: gore, climate, government, politicians, taxes, regulation

<clipSource>http://mensnewsdaily.com/2008/07/03/climate-democracy/</clipSource>

24 hours in pictures - July 7

clipped by: righthand

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Cologne, Germany: Two participants pose during the Christopher Street Day parade in front of the cathedral

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Turkey: Oil wrestlers in action

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Spain: A local man mounts a wild horse

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Hui'an, China: Dog catchers on a motorbike drag a stray dog along a street

"You know, land rebounding, coming up, springing up out of the water at an inch and a half a year."

DeBoer has good reason to be up on the jargon. Over the past decades, isostatic rebound has more than doubled the size of his family's seafront property, as the rising Earth's crust lifts new real estate out of the water.

The family even went to court — the case went all the way up to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals — to defend their right to the new land.

"You wouldn't think it would be much," says DeBoer, "but when it's flat land to begin with, any change is significant. We gain probably an acre or so every year." With all this new acreage, the DeBoers have built themselves a nine-hole golf course.

Tags: a, golf, course, excellent

<clipSource>http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91894873&ft=1&f=1007</clipSource>

Top 10 National Park Lodges

clipped by: The contrast between the white snow and the gray-blue ice makes it possible to track melting snow on the ice sheet in satellite imagery, such as this image, captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on June 22, 2004. In similar images taken in mid-June of 2001, 2002, and 2003, more and more ice was exposed in each successive year. This year seems to have broken the trend. Though more of the gray ice is exposed this year than in 2002, the melt is far less significant than last year’s melt. There is evidence in this image that snow is melting along the southwest coast of Greenland, south of Qeqertarsuaq Island. In addition to the exposed ice sheet, bright blue pools of liquid water puddle near the snowline on the glacier.

Tags: greenland, snowmelt, land visible, warming

<clipSource>http://www.redorbit.com/modules/imglib/download.php?Url=/modules/imagegallery/gallery_images/1_a9959158cacaab4bf0c7de1a6915b624.jpg</clipSource>

Glaciers melting at an 'alarming' rate

clipped by: pokkets
clipper's remarks: There are figures which show the current melt rates, and they say there is no end in sight, but the end will come when there is no glacier left to melt. people that rely on glaciers for water, will have to find it somewhere else.
