This volcanic lake in Flores had been turned bright turquoise from algae and bacteria living in the water.

Bacteria may have turned this lake a blue/brown color but we can’t help thinking of steaming hot chocolate when we look at the picture.

Climate Change Is Already Affecting the West's Water

If there's a global warming event -- a mammoth hurricane, tornado, or forest fire -- in our neighborhood, then we get concerned. From this perspective, the loss of a few thousand acres of ice in a remote corner of Montana hardly seems significant. Most of us don't see it as a danger sign.

But it is. Disappearing glaciers is a harbinger of huge problems. In the West, the most obvious is drought.

By 2020 Glacier National Park will be "Puddles National Park" and the rest of the west won't be much better off. So where's the concern?

It's said our primeval ancestors had a simple arithmetic system: "One, two, three, many." That describes the focus of many 2008 voters, whose concerns are the economy, energy prices, Iraq, and "those other problems." As we get closer to the presidential election, most Americans aren't worried about global warming. Maybe they will be when they turn the tap and no water comes out.

In early August we toured Glacier National Park with the Sierra Club, catching a glimpse of several of the humongous ice fields. In 1910 there were 150 glaciers in the park; now there are 25, which are losing 9 percent of their mass per year. Sometime between 2015 and 2020 they'll disappear. Locals joke the 1.4 million acres will be renamed "Puddles National Park."

Why isn't global climate change seen as a more important issue?

Obama does not even mention the name of Harry Truman. It was Truman's will alone, together with the resulting efforts of the United States and British military forces, that resulted in the airlift and its improbable success.

Also missing from Obama's account is the political context. Arrayed against Truman and the Truman Doctrine specifically and Truman foreign policy generally through the summer and fall of 1948 were Henry Wallace and his supporters urging concessions to the Soviet Union. Is there any doubt that were he alive at that time, Obama would have stood together with George McGovern among them? As Fred Schwarz notes at NRO, contrasting Obama's views with those of Dewey and Truman in the 1948 presidential race, Obama's "political views, socialist at home and internationalist abroad, are much more like those of Henry Wallace, the Progressive candidate."

Drilling officially begins in ANWR

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Northern Engineering professor came to check on ice core samples from McCall Glacier, located in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

More than 150 ice cores were collected during a two-week period. An ice core 150 meters long was extracted during the drilling work and is the longest extracted ice core from an Arctic glacier in the U.S. The core, which is longer than 1 1/2 football fields, could hold 200 years of the glacier’s history, Nolan said.

The samples will be studied in the fall to gain more information about climate change and how it affects Arctic regions.

Nolan said the cores are like layered cakes. Each section can be studied for information about a certain time frame.

At the ice museum, Nolan held up a core and said it represented a four- or five- year period 300 years ago.

Climate Democracy

clipper's remarks: The point is fundamental. Whether warming or cooling is beneficial depends largely on where you live. Federal control of climate is therefore inappropriate. International control, even worse. Climate democracy requires local control. If the political discussion remains national during this election season, the candidates should – at the very least – choose vice presidential running mates who favor warming: at least acknowledging that the north matters.

Local climate control: how can it be done? - the facts are these. To say that climate engineering is in a pre-early stage of development is a vast understatement. There is no such thing. Governments can no more control climate globally than they can locally. We have a long, long way to go technologically before any such thing as climate democracy can become reality. Wake up and smell the crap – it’s a scam! They want to raise taxes and increase government control over earthly endeavors and you won’t get anything for it in return.

I’ve never been one to disparage a glacier, but that doesn’t obscure my recognition of the manipulation in Mr. Gore’s message when he attempts to convince us that we have no choice. Balderdash! If government can control the earth’s temperature, then it can be forced in either direction. More importantly, if politicians are going to assume the authority to manipulate climate, voters should decide which way it goes.

Mr. Gore lives in the southern United States where I can well understand that a few degrees of cooling seems like a good thing. Try walking around Baton Rouge, Louisiana on a hot, humid summer day. Given a democratic choice, the south will likely rise in favor of cooling. But put yourself in the middle of a snowstorm in northern Minnesota and your perspective will change dramatically. Several degrees warmer would be a relief. Make it colder and Minnesota will suffer physically and economically.
