As a progressive Christian it is often difficult to watch those who take the bully pulpit in the name of Christ but apparently forgot to bring Jesus along for their ride.

The stunning events of today should give all Christians a reason to pause and remember that we need to be ever so vigilant in who it is that we choose to follow.

That aside, no one can discount the clout Robertson has in Christian circles.

Budget woes impoverishing generations of people? Nope, doesn’t matter. Endless wars killing hundreds of thousands of God’s creations? Nope, doesn’t matter. Raping of the environment, pillaging our educational system, kids without healthcare, genocide in the Sudan? Nope, doesn’t matter

Christians were led to believe that the only issues that would matter to Jesus Himself, would be gay marriage and abortion.

They have embraced a political agenda over the agenda of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ deserves better than the hypocrisy of man.

Just up the road from Brokeback Mountain, closeted away in their own private Idaho, the gay sheep were getting it on.

"I wish I knew how to quit ewe!"

They were doing it in front of scientists at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station near the Idaho-Montana-Wyoming border.

In a 15-by-10-foot "arena," a young ram is offered four choices: two ewes in heat and two rams.

For 30 minutes, the unrestrained ram does as he pleases. The scientists count his "anogenital sniffs," "mounts," and "ejaculations."

A bare majority of rams turn out to be heterosexual. One in five swings both ways. About 15 percent are asexual, and 7 percent to 10 percent are gay.

Gay rams don't act girly. They're just as gay in the wild. And a crucial part of their brains—the "sexually dimorphic nucleus"—looks more like a ewe's than like a straight ram's. Gay men have a similar brain resemblance to women.

Roselli's interest is in the science. He figured the political upshot, if any, would be gay-friendly.

This information was obtained (but not copied) from, Discover magazine, indiana.edu website and personal knowledge from past research on this topic.

Scientists have found that aprox 8% of male sheep (rams), both wild and domestic, seek out sex with other rams rather than females (ewes). It is also known that wolves mate in same sex pairings on occassion; wolves mate for life. Other animals known to induldge in same sex encounters include geese, bonobo chimpanzees and penguines (who are also known to form lasting relationships where they show no interest in other penguins sexually).

Therefore, how can the argument that homosexuality is "unnatural" possibly be valid? Animals are not known to persue "acts of deviance" as many homosexual detractors put it.

According to Roughgarden, sexual selection can't explain the homosexuality that's been documented in over 450 different vertebrate species. Zoologists have known for many years that homosexuality isn't uncommon among animals. (My own cat has raised suspicions ever since he tried to mount a cowering male dachshund.) But I was surprised to learn recently that male sheep exhibit homosexuality at least as often as humans: roughly 8% of rams turn out to have sex exclusively with other rams.

This little piece of faunal ephemera might otherwise have gone unnoticed outside the rarely intersecting subcultures of gays and shepherds. But a few months ago, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals launched a p.r. campaign on behalf of gay sheep. PETA claims that researchers in Oregon are killing gay sheep and cutting open their brains in order to learn how to turn gay rams straight. A few weeks ago, London's Sunday Times picked up the story in an unnerving article that states the research "raises the prospect that pregnant women could one day be offered a treatment to reduce or eliminate the chance that their offspring will be homosexual." The story has pinged around quite a few blogs since, and Rush Limbaugh and Martina Navratilova have taken their predicted positions. (Limbaugh: gay activists finally have a reason to oppose abortion. Navratilova: homophobes are murdering gay sheep.)

It's a pity that a story with so much potential for moral indignation and bad sheep puns (ewegenics!) turns out to be wrong. To be sure, a group of researchers led by physiologist Charles Roselli of Oregon Health & Science University has killed about 55 sheep, homosexual and heterosexual, in order to study the neurological basis of sexual attraction. They have confirmed that test sheep are gay by allowing them to pick among males and females that have been restrained in stanchions to await sexual intercourse.

Charles Roselli set out to discover what makes some sheep gay. Then the news media and the blogosphere got hold of the story.

Dr. Roselli, a researcher at the Oregon Health and Science University, has searched for the past five years for physiological factors that might explain why about 8 percent of rams seek sex exclusively with other rams instead of ewes. The goal, he says, is to understand the fundamental mechanisms of sexual orientation in sheep. Other researchers might some day build on his findings to seek ways to determine which rams are likeliest to breed, he said.

But since last fall, when People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals started a campaign against the research, it has drawn a torrent of outrage from animal rights activists, gay advocates and ordinary citizens around the world — all of it based, Dr. Roselli and colleagues say, on a bizarre misinterpretation of what the work is about.

The story of the gay sheep became a textbook example of the distortion and vituperation that can result when science meets the global news cycle.

The news media storm reached its zenith last month, when The Sunday Times in London published an article under the headline “Science Told: Hands Off Gay Sheep.” It asserted, incorrectly, that Dr. Roselli had worked successfully to “cure” homosexual rams with hormone treatments, and added that “critics fear” that the research “could pave the way for breeding out homosexuality in humans.”

Martina Navratilova, the tennis star who is both openly gay and a PETA ally, wrote in an open letter that the research “can only be surmised as an attempt to develop a prenatal treatment” for sexual conditions.

“The more we play God or try to improve on Mother Nature, the more damage we are doing with all kinds of experiments that either have already turned or will turn into nightmares,” she wrote in an e-mail reply to a reporter’s query. “How in the world could straight or gay sheep help humanity?”

Former Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova has come out in favour of the rights of homosexual sheep in a burgeoning row over tests carried out by two US universities aimed at "curing" ovine friends of Dorothy.

According to The Times, researchers at Oregon State University in the city of Corvallis and at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland were able to "pinpoint the mechanisms influencing the desires of 'male-oriented' rams by studying their brains".

Specifically, they cut open the offending sheeps' skulls, attached electonic sensors to their grey matter and monitored them while "varying the hormone levels, mainly by injecting hormones into the brain". They reported "considerable success" in getting previously gay rams to consider a bit of boy-on-girl.

The purpose behind these experiments is to "improve the productivity of herds" since "approximately one ram in 10 prefers to mount other rams rather than mate with ewes". The implications are far more sinister, opponents claim, since the acquired knowledge could in the future be used to "cure" human homosexuality, or may offer the prospect that "pregnant women could one day be offered a [hormone] treatment to reduce or eliminate the chance that their offspring will be homosexual".

Ms Navratilova weighed in with: "How can it be that in the year 2006 a major university would host such homophobic and cruel experiments?"

In response to Mr. Thomas Rich's letter on Sunday, Nov. 19, directed at Mr. Leo Cuevas, let me say this: "Being gay has nothing to do with being a pedophile."

Mark Foley claims to be an alcoholic who never had improper physical contact with minors. Why should we doubt him? All his other lies certainly don't illustrate a pattern? Of course, based upon Foley's claims, we should feel sorry for him, because he is obviously a victim here.

Foley's behavior is part of a larger social trend taking no personal responsibility for your actions. Like so many other people, he chooses to blame some other event or other person when in fact, he is the real culprit and 100 percent responsible for his own actions.

No wonder the GOP leadership ignored the red flags and is blaming the Democrats for this scandal. Not accepting responsibility for anything seems to be one of the "core values" nowadays for conservative Republicans. Now the flocks of sheep in America will assume that all gay men are pedophiles, just as they've been taught.

Gay men are not pedophiles. I hope the enlightened people of America will use their brains for once and separate things. If you think otherwise, then does that mean that a married family man who

molests a child is gay? Or what about that teacher who molested and is now married to one of her students is she gay?

It sickens me that these self-righteous right-wingers walk around preaching purity and moral values while they molest our children. A hypocrite is worse than a liar.

Now That We've Got Congress...

clipper's remarks: Crain does have a point. If gays & lesbians want to make progress, we're going to have to push the Democrats on "safe" (read majority supported) issues. But I think we're also going to have to push them on the marriage issues as well, with a simple message that the Democratic party supports equality. How that's accomplished may be a a matter of debate, but even Democrats who earnestly oppose same-sex marrage ought to be able to support fairness and equality. If not, why are the Democrats in the first place?

Among social causes, only stem cell research made the "Six in '06" pledge for the Democrats' first priority. No one expected gay rights legislation to make that list, especially Democrats who remember how gays in the military ended Bill Clinton's honeymoon within weeks after he took office back in 1993.

But we still should be watching for early signs of whether the Democrats decide they were elected to advance an agenda or only advance an agenda they think will get them re-elected. If the first week is is any indication, the forecast could be for stormy weather ahead.

Even if the Dems don't lurch to the right with the likes of Ford and Murtha, HRC and other gay groups should keep the pressure on Democrats to remember the principles supposedly behind the party. Two gay rights bills — employment non-discrimination and hate crimes — already enjoy overwhelming public support. Getting them both through Congress and onto George Bush's desk should be a no-brainer, and happen sooner rather than later.

And if the party really wants to prove itself to its core constituencies, it should remember during the coming debate on immigration reform that gay Americans have no rights, right now, to keep their loved ones in this country. Enacting the Uniting American Families Act, which has bipartisan and growing support, would speak volumes to voters that the Democrats aren't Republicans in sheep's clothing.
