European Union court bans crucifixes in Italian classrooms

Crucifixes have been banned in Italian schools by a ruling from the European Court of Human Rights.

The decision has enraged politicians, with Italy's foreign minister Franco Frattini saying: 'This is a death blow for a Europe of values and rights.

'Europe's roots lie in its Christian identity. At a time when we're trying to bring religions closer, the Christian religion gets whacked.

The case was brought by a Finnish woman, Soile Lautsi, who is married to an Italian.

Both are atheists.

The European court's ruling, which will be enforced in three months, said crucifixes could disturb children who were not Christians.

And it ordered the Italian government to pay 5000 Euro moral damages to Lautsi.

Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini introduced legislation in 1924 ordering all classrooms to display crucifixes. Despite several attempts to have the law overturned in recent years it has stood.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called on the European Union to help neighbouring Ukraine fight a swine flu epidemic, saying its further spread is threatening the wider bloc.

The armed forces are said to have carried out "war games" in which nuclear missiles were fired and troops practised an amphibious landing on the country's coast.

Documents obtained by Wprost, one of Poland's leading news magazines, said the exercise was carried out in conjunction with soldiers from Belarus.

The manoeuvres are thought to have been held in September and involved about 13,000 Russian and Belarusian troops.

Poland, which has strained relations with both countries, was cast as the "potential aggressor".

Marek Opiola MP, said: "It's an attempt to put us in our place. Don't forget all this happened on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland."

The Russian troop exercises will come as an unwelcome sight to the states nestling on Russia’s western border who have deep-rooted anxieties over any Russian show of strength.

Moscow and Minsk have insisted that Operation West was to help "ensure the strategic stability in the East European region".

KPMG has released its annual global survey of corporate tax systems. For the 10th-consecutive year, the average corporate tax rate fell, and it is now down to 25.5 percent (just 23.2 percent in the European Union!).

In the United States, unfortunately, the corporate tax rates remains stuck at about 40 percent. Only one developed nation, Japan, has a more punitive regime.

Something to keep in mind the next time a politician complains that jobs are going to China (corporate tax rate of 25 percent).

AGAINST LISBON TREATY RATIFICATION

We, the citizens of the sovereign countries of the European Union, aware of our civil rights and in an effort to prevent steps leading to a bureaucratic lack of freedom across Europe, hereby express our disapproval of the Lisbon Treaty ratification.

The Lisbon Treaty is basically the European Constitution, which has already been rejected once. It gives the EU new powers to the detriment of the member countries (the right to veto measures is cancelled 68 times). It takes away our independent foreign, economic, social and energy policies and much more. Countries will lose control over indirect tax rates.

On the basis of the above, we refuse ratification of the Lisbon Treaty and ask the governments of the various countries, in the interests of maintaining the liberty of the nations and their future generations, to initiate negotiations on a new direction for the European Union,

SECRET plans to seize more than £4billion a year from Britain and make its citizens pay taxes direct to Europe emerged last night.

The leaked proposals, seen by the Daily Express, state that Britain should lose the billions of pounds in rebate that was agreed by Margaret Thatcher 25 years ago.

The plans – with a foreword by European Union Commissioner Jose Manuel Barroso – would cost every British family at least £155 a year.

“The EU has shown time and time again it is greedy for power. This is another sign they will never stop trying to grab it.”

Ruth Lea of Eurosceptic think-tank Global Vision said: “People need to wake up to the fact we are now in a superstate.

A huge majority of readers backs Britain leaving the EU, the Daily Express phone poll revealed last night. Asked whether the UK should get out, an astonishing 99 per cent said yes.

Of the thousands who voted, just a few readers said the UK ought to stay in.

British ministers face an embarrassing showdown in court after the European Commission accused Britain of failing to protect its citizens from secret surveillance on the internet.

The move adds to claims that Britain is creeping towards a Big Brother state and could end with the Government being forced to defend its policy on internet privacy in front of judges at the European Court of Justice.

Under the programme, the UK-listed company Phorm has developed technology that allows internet service providers (ISPs) to track what their users are doing online.

ISPs can then sell that information to media companies and advertisers, who can use it to place more relevant advertisements on websites the user subsequently visits. The EU has accused Britain of turning a blind eye to the growth in this kind of internet marketing.

LONDON (AFP) - A boat belonging to a British couple feared kidnapped by pirates has been found by the Royal Navy, though the owners were not on board, the Ministry of Defence said Thursday.

"The MoD can confirm that during counter-piracy operations overnight a Royal Navy ship encountered the yacht owned by Paul and Rachel Chandler. It was found in international waters," the ministry said in a statement.

"Paul and Rachel Chandler were not on board the yacht and we do not have any reason to believe they have been harmed.

"Royal naval vessels operating with our international partners under European Union, NATO and combined maritime forces will continue to play a full role in efforts to secure Paul and Rachel's release."

And in the 1970s it said that even in case of conflicts between the treaty and national constitutions, the treaty would take precedence. Of course, judges can say whatever they want. What is more remarkable is that all the nations in the EU have more or less grudgingly accepted this idea that a treaty is superior to their constitutions.

But from 1787 on, it has been recognized that for a treaty to be valid, it must be consistent with the Constitution—that the Constitution is a higher authority than treaties.
